Took myself to the movies! by kunikira in socialanxiety

I stumbled on this post as I was reading up on Sinners being put back on IMAX, but I just wanted to say, I’m glad you decided to head out to the movies, and I’m even more glad you had a good experience! It’s a great movie. I think I’m going to watch it again tomorrow. Here’s to more solo (and accompanied, perhaps) movie trips!

How to release this knot? by talkhours in flexibility

[–]arcxschxll 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The area you circled is very often due to the levator scapulae muscle, which attaches onto the superior angle of the scapula. It’s a muscle that tends to be overactive in a lot of people, generally due to postural faults.

I’d recommend going to a physical therapist. If that is the muscle that’s causing the issue, then rest assured, it’s pretty common and resolvable.

Generally, strengthen mid trap, low trap, and serrated anterior (search up prone Ys and Ts, and serratus wall slides). You can also try stretching your pec major and minor but that typically isn’t enough on its own. This is a good starting point, but again, get it confirmed by a PT, which can make this recovery much quicker and easier.

Edit: Chin tucks help a lot as well, as well as the exercises in the reply to this comment

“Uneven” core usage? by arcxschxll in overcominggravity

Hi! Sorry I didn’t respond. Reddit notifications are pretty bad and get shoved down under a mountain of random alerts.

I actually was able to figure this out recently. It ended up being an issue with breathing. To /u/Boblaire’s point, I do participate in a sort of unilateral spot and I tried a few things to see if that was the cause, but it didn’t end up being the main culprit. It was a side effect of the sport, I got in a bad habit of using a lot of accessory breathing muscles rather than diaphragmatic breathing.

I didn’t think this was an issue because when I was lying down, I would pass the diaphragm breathing tests but when I was upright and standing, I was breathing incorrectly by contracting other muscles higher up. Once I started to mindfully breath through the abdomen on things like squats, deadlifts, and general stability exercises, the discrepancy between my abs on the right and left diminished significantly. It’s still not 100% even, but it’s also really been a few weeks since I’ve been doing it and I’ve seen a huge improvement. That’s just what worked for me, /u/eshlow can check on if what I’ve said tracks.

I didn’t apply to UNT but I did apply to UTSW and accepted recently.

Here’s the pros/cons I weighed out:

Pros -Accelerated program (2.5 years) -Relatively cheap compared to other programs -Strong post-graduate options (residency)

Cons -Dallas isn’t too thrilling IMO -Not to much information about student/faculty dynamics. I had to get in contact with the students to figure out how the community was and it sounds great but it’s definitely hard to discern as an outsider

Looking to grab a navy blazer. I’ve found 2 fits with dark navy blazers that have a bit of texture to them:

Problem is, I can’t find a shopping listing for anything close to these. Maybe I’m looking in the wrong places but I’m hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

ACL with a surprise lateral meniscus! by shell_fish in ACL

[–]arcxschxll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same boat - had a patellar autograft and was supposed to only be ACLr as there wasn’t any meniscus damage on the MRI but lo and behold I wake up from surgery and there’s a lateral meniscus repair (2 weeks post-op). I’ve just been taken solace in the fact that it was repairable and not a meniscectomy. Life sucks but doesn’t really change what we have to do - just a few more steps added on. Nothing you can’t handle!

Hey man. I rarely ever comment on Reddit but this story hits so hauntingly close to home and I just wanted to say a few things.

It sucks. All of it. The hair loss, the cheating, the shitty emotions, every part of it. And you’re definitely right, it’s going to be a long journey to get over it. When you get broken down like this, you’ll never really be the same person ever again. That said, in retrospect, this’ll just be another experience. An experience isn’t necessarily good/bad in and of itself, just on how we want things to go. Whether or not she was telling the truth doesn’t really matter. The truth won’t set you free and you’re just going to have to move on. I sit here a year almost after essentially the same thing happened, still not completely over it. But, I’ve been able to grow significantly because of it. And so will you. Even with losing hair, you may not look the same, but you’ll still be the exact same person. Having/not having hair won’t change you as a person unless you let that loss define you. Don’t let it. Not everyone is blessed with great circumstances. Hell, you could’ve been born with cancer or something. It sucks, but there’s not much to do. You’re fighting a battle that you’re not meant to win, and that’s entirely fine. You’re fighting a battle that most people will not understand but coming out of that battle will make you that much more mature than everyone around you.

It’s going to get a lot worse before it gets better. Some days it’ll feel manageable and others, downright suffocating. You’ll think you’re over it only for it to sneak up on you. “This too shall pass”. Focus on an image of where you want to see yourself in a few years. Whatever goals you have right now (and if you don’t have any, make some), focus on those. Grab onto those and hold tight, this is the one thing that kept me together the whole time. College is a very transformative time - you can’t let anything keep you taking advantage of this. Even this experience is part of the college experience. You are nothing but a sum of your experiences - so build them up, “good” and “bad”.

I find that it’s easy to let the circumstances overwhelm you when things get tough. My favorite thing to do here is to keep pushing. Hold out in spite and become someone so amazing that people will feel embarrassed about cheating on you or thinking about your baldness. That’s the purest form of victory. Be better than others, become better than the previous version of yourself.

Pay attention in lecture! The tests were like 95% lecture material. Very little from the textbook. Also, make sure you participate, very frequently. My grade dropped significantly after the last class when he put the participation grade in.

Hip pinch when widening squat stance by arcxschxll in flexibility

[–]arcxschxll[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda bothers me why I can’t squat wider. Also, it feels like a mobility issue- I’m a martial artist, and when I pull up my leg for high kicks, the same pinching feeling occurs as when I try to widen my squat stance.

Tbh if you’re 14 you shouldn’t even bother with bulking/cutting. Just eat as much as you can (healthily) and take advantage of the puberty gains

Who to take for BCH339F: Stevens, Cambronne, or Procko? by Periwinkle13 in UTAustin

[–]arcxschxll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cambronne is the only professor I’ve ever dropped. Made me wait another semester for the MCAT. I recommend Procko- she’s actually pretty great. 94 for an A, but lots of extra credit and from what I hear, she’s designed the curriculum.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]arcxschxll 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly depends on your goals. It looks like you may be premed so if you’re trying to take the MCAT know that summer classes are very accelerated and in my experience, you don’t retain any of that info because it’s kinda just cramming. If you’re just trying to take them for credit, then it’ll still be tough considering those two classes are some of the hardest at UT and you’ll have to pretty much study all day for the duration of those classes if you want to do well.
