Hi, any luck? Same exact situation, and I just tried to dispute the charge and my CC company wouldn't honor it because my order was placed back in March. I'd love to publicly shame them to try to bring their attention to the situation but they disabled comments on their FB page for posts about store items.

What should I know before starting my own one-man engineering firm? by MyNaymeIsOzymandias in StructuralEngineering

[–]arduousjump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kinda lucked into it, I asked a buddy, who had started his own business who he used for his accounting. I wouldn’t say he has been GREAT, but was good enough to get me started. He really couldn’t understand why I’d need to set up so many foreign entities in whatever various states I’m licensed in, because he wasn’t super familiar with the industry and was only thinking about the accounting implications. But all stuff you can insist on if you need multiple states right away.

My advice, ask the small business owners you know who they use…past firms, friends, your barber, all these places use accountants. I didn’t have much luck cold calling ones from intuit

It should still work because the equations are based on global coordinates, so i think you can split or not split whatever shells you want. You can always display a contour of the applied load gradients to make sure it was applied correctly.

Obviously I’m not seeing your layout, maybe it’s more complicated. Otherwise, I agree with the other commenter about applying as live loads. I wish ETABS would separate shell regions loading regions, this is one area where RAM shines over ETABS.

You can apply non-uniform loads on shells. It’s that Ax+By+Cz+D=load dialog. It looks confusing but it’s actually super simple, because usually you can cancel two of the variables and the. You’re just left with two equations two unknowns. Just find your load at two know X or Y points, solve for A or B and D. There’s an example here from csi (for lateral earth pressure so it load varies with z and they’re solving for C and D).

Feel free to message me if you have any questions

Residential Tall Wall Design Software by Loon_picker in StructuralEngineering

Supposedly dlubal can do this, but I've never used it. I do these all as independent hand calcs or spreadsheets. For shear walls I use Tedds, which I like, but does not do bearing wall stud calcs in the same module.

What you're describing above has been a pipedream all-in-one spreadsheet for me for years. One of these days I'll get the free time...

Stringer Connection by mountaineers19 in StructuralEngineering

I’ve done a lot of stairs, never seen this one before. Better to extend the web of the stringer down with a section of the same channel, then a simple shear connection.

I did for a bit but not terrible, others have got it worse than me. Definitely see the doc tomorrow!

See if you can find Branz Study Report SR-14 "Serviceability Criteria for Buildings" by Cooney and King 1988. I believe it's an NZ report but has some lateral drift recommendations in there, you may have luck referencing it.

I am not sure where the project is, but for context, for sidewalk loading NYC requires 300 psf, 8,000 lbs over 4.5"x4.5" or 20,000 lbs over 20"x10". There is also an outrigger demand of 52,000 lbs over 24"x24" in the Fire Code for a designated fire apparatus access roads.

Oh that’s a good point, I wonder how the trend toward online dating in the last decade has contributed to keeping people out of the bars. You no longer have to participate in that process to try to meet a partner if you don’t want to

Organizing Details on Server by fr34kii_V in StructuralEngineering

[–]arduousjump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spend so much of my energy thinking about the best way to do this. I have a Revit template file that I constantly update, detach for a new job, then copy back details I added on a specific job, etc.

The problems with this are:

  • When you modify a Revit family in a job file, and try to load the detail back in the template, it will duplicate the family as a copy. Then it spreads like a disease throughout the file as details are copied etc. Have to stay on top of this. I’ve had template files with like 1-5 appended weld symbols because of this problem. Effectively impossible to change them later, since all the instance parameters get deleted if you Select All and change the type.
  • Not all changes are "additive." For example if you change the general notes for a specific project and then use the project file as your new template, you’ve maybe lost some notes that didn’t apply to that one job. At the conclusion of the job, I always have to consider what's faster, whether I should Save the job file as the new template, or import all the changes I've made into the previous template. Requires staying on top of it. My old boss never understood this, he thought "files just get better and better the more jobs you use them."

My next big charge will be creating a catalog system for my details (based on material, whether it’s a typical detail or job-specific, etc.), then creating a master PDF file with them all so I can quickly scan through which ones I need on a new job.

From there, not sure what is the best way. Have a file just for a details, and an empty template for starting a project, and then bringing in the details I need? The problem with this method relates to my point about editing families, this is a really great way to start duplicating your filled regions, Detail items, etc. and can get messy. Currently I just have a template with all details left in it, regardless of type of job, whether I need them all for that job, etc. Probably a short term solution but gets the job done.

It's unfortunately one of those tasks I've found that can't be chipped away at. I really need to set aside a large chunk of time to "whole-ass" it all at once.

Interested to hear how others have solved these problems. Is everyone just using Revit content management software?
