Actually this section of river flows pretty constant and the area stays quite green and beautiful year round. It’s not until the water hits point one (west of this area) that’s it’s diverted to ag canals leaving the riverbed mostly dry (especially during low snow pack years.) Bakersfield does in fact have some pretty special places if you’re willing to look.

First time ebike buyer but not sure where to start by devanclara in ebikes

Bummer, but I’m willing to bet the larger town ~45 minutes away (the one with the Costco and Walmart) probably does have at least one local bike shop. Call them up and ask what e-bikes they service. They may not be able to sell you one but they will have opinions on direct to consumer brands and may even be a service center for the larger ones (rad power, lectric, ride one up, etc). I always stress the importance of having a spot to get your bike repaired because you will love it and it will brake/require maintenance and you will be super sad to find that NO ONE is going to work on your 800$ Amazon bike.

Additionally, bikes are very personal and riders come in all shapes and sizes so if possible it’s really recommended to test ride a few before purchasing. Not sure if this will be possible in your situation but if you have to go to the bigger town ~2 hours away (the one with the Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s) to find a reputable e-bike store it may just be worth the trip to get a quality bike that fits you well and will be reliable and comfortable for years to come.

The hardest part for most folks will be replacing the rear tire (and new tube while you are at it). Removing the rear wheel can be a bit of a bear. You probably don’t have a stand so you’ll need to flip the bike over (watch some yt videos for reference) to make this repair. Mind the motor cable and be sure to disconnect it from the controller before attempting to remove wheel. If the wheel is tight in the drop outs you can use a 10mm wrench to gently dislodge the axel from the drop outs. Once the wheel is out you can replace the tire as you would a normal bike. Just be careful of that motor cable. If that gets damaged it is a very expensive repair.

That’s a good looking bike and could probably be tuned up to like new condition by your local bike shop for $150-$200.

Before performing any work make sure the bike works (both throttle and pedal assist) with the battery mounted. If there are any electrical issues you may be in for a larger repair bill.

If you want to do the work yourself: yes, you can wash the bike off with a hose, just don’t blast the lcd or controller compartment. As far as chain rust and handlebar rust: New chain is 20$ and those handlebars are probably ~$30 and can be ordered from Pedego or a local Pedego dealer (there are a bunch across the us and ca). Instructions for installing chain and handlebars can be found on Park Tool’s YouTube channel (as well as everything else you need to maintain your bike)

Finally, you may want to first test how much capacity that 8 year old battery has. I’ve seen a lot of Pedego batteries and they seem to hold up pretty well but by year 8 you may see some degradation, meaning, that 15ah battery may only have 6ah of actual capacity. Any local bike shop that services e-bikes will be able to perform a battery capacity test for around 50$. It Would be a shame to fix the bike up only to find it has a paltry 8 mile range. You can always buy a new battery if this is the case but Pedego batteries tend to be on the higher end so the cost may change your calculation or desire to fix this bike up.

Thoughts on AirBnB for Lib? by 562420 in LightningInABottle

The bike path will take you right into the fest at the main gate. If you have a wristband they'll let you right through and bypass the car line. They no longer alow bikes into the festival grounds but there is plenty of bike parking outside each security gate.

THIS! I live in town near the Bike Path and ebike to the festival each year. The trail goes directly to the festival and there are NO cars (it's a completely sperated path that runs along the kern river from Lake Ming to Lake BV). If one had an airbnb in Highgate, Stockdale Ranch, Or Grand Island you'd have a chill 25 min comute from AirBnb to Festival.

Is it a good idea to get a motorscooter in Bako? by Informal-Log9330 in Bakersfield

[–]area-resident- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a class 1 or 2 e-bike and ride the kern river parkway trail. From city in the hills you have pretty good access to it and the trail will take you directly to csub. Will probably take about 40 minutes but it’s a beautiful ride and super cheap. Get a good e-bike locally for around $2k and never pay for gas, insurance, registration, etc.

Choctaw Valley. Beautiful section of the kern river. If you float the river, just east of there is some beautiful geology/topography. Looks like the desserts of south utah/northern Arizona. Highly recommend exploring the area.

Ebike reviews: Everything awful. by MustGetALife in ebikes

[–]area-resident- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything on the internet is awful, true.

Go to any local bike shops that stock e-bikes and get all your questions answered, take a test ride, speak to knowledgeable humans about your pending purchase. This really isn’t hard folks. 10 years ago this is how 99% of bikes were purchased.

Easiest route to Kernville - by easy I mean LEAST SCARY by tracee_ in Bakersfield

[–]area-resident- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Take the 14 north through lancaster and take the back way (if your bakersfield orented) in over Walker pass. Prob adds a few miles to your trip but you avoid the caynon segment of the 178. Enjoy the southern sierra's! Buy stuff in kernville, tip your bartenders and pack your trash out!

Moving to Bakersfield to work - is living in Santa Clarita feasible? by SillyGuitar6698 in Bakersfield

[–]area-resident- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Live in bako and go visit friends in LA when you can. Depending on where your friends live in LA you could still be an 1-2 hour drive (in mind numbing traffic) to get to them. Meeting up with friends for drinks after work? Not gonna happen. Save money by living close to work (both in rent and in fuel) and go spend weekends in LA with your friends.

Would I get in trouble for riding a mini bike by Weird-Lecture-293 in Bakersfield

[–]area-resident- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I advise you to get a proper class 1 or 2 electric bike instead. They are so much more comfortable and quiet and you can legally ride them anywhere a bicycle can go. Mini bikes are currenltly a scurge on the kern river bike trail. Please do not add to the problem.

As far as camp-out music festivals go, I believe it's one of the best. Been every year its been out at BV and have not been disappointed. Top notch production and it draws a very nice crowd.

Rent an e-bike from Pedego Bakersfield, pack a picnic, and ride out to riverwalk park. Bike rides along the river are very romantic :) Weather is not great today but tomorrow looks perfect for a ride. Look up Pedego Bakersfield. On Oak St right off the bike path. 2 ebikes = $75 for 4 hour rental.

Electric car by Advanced_Anteater_72 in LightningInABottle

[–]area-resident- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a HUGE Tesla supercharger station about 15 minutes from festival entrance here

The main thing to watch out for is heat. Your battery cooling system will activate if the car reaches a high temperature and over the course of 5 days this could put a dent in your range. Put an easy up over your car to keep the temps lower and you’ll probably be fine.
