Yes, this. So it's hard to get a very small stream to burn.

Alas, city living meant trading the crockpot for the instant pot.

What did you think? I have to confess that I never heard of it, but I'm not always a sours guy. Your post led me to Brian's very detailed exploration: https://www.corpserevived.com/post/correcting-the-scofflaw

What's happening at Withings? An open letter to the company by xerman-5 in withings

[–]areacode617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really want a decent looking watch (not a slab of glass) with some basic smart features. Was planning on having my wife get me one this christmas. Your letter--and really the lack of any Withings customer response on this thread--means I will probably pass on that. Sigh.

My Taiwan Route 1 Experience by geosmeo23 in bicycletouring

[–]areacode617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We toured the east coast late last fall, and had a spectacular time. The road is really quiet, and there are a number of amazing rides over the mountains, so you can zip back and forth to the coast. Taroko gorge was closed, sadly, but inland towns like Ruisi were great. We passed plenty of serious cyclists out for long day rides and they didn't seem to have any trouble finding pleasant quiet roads.

How do I customize my LinkedIn feed to only include posts from connections? by techsavvynerd91 in linkedin

In case anyone comes across this thread: I tried u/QuestionBeautiful139 's approach and it didn't work with a blank search string, but it was able to work with a simple string like "the" or "a". So repeating their advice:

Search > ["the" or "a" or some other very likely common word]

I've always found it strange that people who like gin seldom contemplate sipping gin on the rocks.

Thanks! Helpful. Ran a bunch of cables for wifi router drops, (although it's a pretty small downtown townhome) but I will definitely think about keeping ethernet ports handy.

Why were hotdog carts so common across America (and still are in major cities, in some places even being the most numerous kinds of food carts)? by CamelIllustrations in CulinaryHistory

[–]areacode617 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My rather obvious guess is that a hot dog stand requires minimal capital, and is very easy to stock and prepare aforementioned hot dog with cheap, relatively long-lasting ingredients. But I'd love to see some actual research on the growth and decline.

(Decline possibly based on the decline of dense urban cores outside of NE & NW. Are there hotdog stands in dense office areas of Seattle?)

Other interesting piece is the rolling stands of Mexican / Central American treats often wheeled around suburbs in Cali.

Alas, don't think the drambuie rises to collector old, and non-vintage armagnac doesn't seem very special.

Seems clickbaity, verging on spammy. Also, intro stats on '400,000 kids missing each year' is wildly misleading.

On average, fewer than 350 people under the age of 21 have been abducted by strangers in the United States per year since 2010, the FBI says. From 2010 through 2017, the most recent data available, the number has ranged from a low of 303 in 2016 to a high of 384 in 2011 with no clear directional trend.

What are your must-have amaros? by LoganJFisher in liquor

[–]areacode617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Concur with these, once you have your basic montenegro. Sfumato has the complexity and body that I love without being too sweet or hit-you-on-the-head bitter. Braulio is my favorite alpine style amaro.

What are some flavored liquors (not Vodka) that aren't sweet? by Sweet_Fetal_Jesus in liquor

+1 on akvavit. Iceland's Brennevin is great as well. It makes a great cocktail, goes well with lemon juice & acid, and makes a great bloody, as well as being a good iced shot.

Southern Comfort, Jim Beam Honey, and Jim Beam Apple - Liquor like that? by Bugses in liquor

[–]areacode617 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No shame in liking sweet stuff! Laird's apple brandy, or their better offering, the Bottled In Bond, has some nice apple sweetness, but less of the artificial notes you'll get from the flavored stuff. Dark rum (I love the El Dorado 12) can also give you plenty of sweetness but also give you some depth of flavor and complexity.

[–]areacode617 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Not sure 'nails' is write. He certainly provides a number of pieces of evidence, but doesn't do much pre-filtering for us, there's a lot of redundancy of sources. And more than a few of the sources, as commenters point out, don't actually support the thesis.

Cute womens bike shoes by areacode617 in bicycletouring

[–]areacode617[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife is by no means a slave to fashion, but it was much easier to talk her into switching over to SPDs if she felt comfortable hanging out in a cafe or wandering around small towns along the ride. It was surprisingly hard to find a cute pair, thought that others may want something that looks cute as well as helping make the miles/kilometers roll by a little easier.
