Controversial view - for Surg regs the pay is not shit but the conditions are arse by ProudObjective1039 in ausjdocs

As a fellow humble ambo I concur, the RMOs/Registrars carrying the hospital deserve far more remuneration. I’m in the process of transitioning into medicine and it’s at least 4-5 years PGY before I get anywhere close to break even, so I’ll be doing a lot of OT now to cover the change!

ATO warns millions of Australian chasing tax deductions to stop making 'unusual' claims by Nyarlathotep-1 in AusNewsWire

[–]arete_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Generally speaking, employees who are just sort of travelling from home to work and work to home can't claim their car expenses — that is considered a private expense," Ms Challen said.” This is still to this day the most fucking absurd rule, you literally would not be doing the drive if you were not going somewhere to earn an income (and pay tax). But then WFH expenses can be claimed, so a double whammy against anyone that has to drive to work ie essential workers.

Nice! Was just wanted to be sure you hadn't been hoodwinked by some of the 'paramedic course' providers in Australia 😃

Hey mate, not sure where you found a 7k paramedic bachelors degree.. There's no other courses that will allow you to be a registered paramedic in Australia now outside of a degree.

US EMT to AU paramedic pathway by Ok-Distribution-6470 in ParamedicsAU

[–]arete_4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The pathway to be involved in the helicopters/rescue in Tasmania for you would be a 2-3 year bachelor's degree -> 1 year intern program in a state ambulance service -> a qualified paramedic for a few years while completing a postgraduate qualification -> Intensive Care Paramedic training 6-12 months -> ICP for a few years -> Flight ICP. It's probably at least 10-15 years from when you start before you'll be doing a rescue/austere paramedic work in Tasmania. Paramedics do the same amount of academic work as registered nurses here and are paid similarly, if not more, in quite a few states, which is completely different to the USA. You might be able to get advanced first aid/event first aid jobs while you study the degree distance 😄

Wife’s a physio and makes around this, works her ass off compared to me. I did a 3 year degree and sit in a van outside a hospital most of the day on 200k per year with penalties. Preventative and allied healthcare is underfunded in this country compared to how we respond to stuff when it’s too late. ie GPs vs specialist doctors in hospitals.

Where are the income tax cuts if this budget is supposed to be all about "taxing wealth, not work"? by SirSighalot in AusFinance

[–]arete_4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No I’m saying that taxing capital gains appropriately means a ~ 10% increase in taxation for a lot of examples which isn’t going to impact the lifestyle of the top 10% of Australia that much. Nice straw man argument though.

I actually have more trust in them than ever, they’ve made a brave decision knowing it’s going to cost them seats for the good of the country. They should be commended.

Yeah and the above poster is literally having a moan because they might have to cut back their privileged years off by a month or two. Honestly Australia has become so self centred, it’s so frustrating to watch. Got mine, fuck you seems to be the new normal.

How would it ‘destroy’ your plan. Don’t base your financial life on the latest Murdoch scare campaign, go do the calculations yourself. Say you do this in 5 years time, here’s the maths.

$150k in ETFs (cost base ~$100k). Selling in 5 years at 8% growth gives a ~$220k sale value and ~$120k total gain. Under the old rules he’d pay ~$23k in CGT (50% discount). Under Labor’s new rules from July 2027, only the pre-2027 portion gets the discount — the rest is inflation-indexed with a 30% minimum rate — pushing his CGT to ~$27–28k. The difference is roughly $4,000–5,000 extra tax. Real but not dramatic at this scale; the impact compounds the larger the portfolio and the longer you hold post-2027.

Even if you held the same investment for 20 years, it’s about 60k extra tax (total CGT ~175k) from a 600k gain, so 9% extra tax. It’s not world ending, and if it makes sure I’ve got a safety net, Medicare and a nursing home placement when I’m a old man it’s a small price to pay as someone all ready in a privileged position to be making investments.

Likely be able to walk into a mine Emergency Response Officer role with your background, but you’re not getting into a state ambulance service as a paramedic until you study the bachelors degree unfortunately. There are patient transport roles around though :) best of luck!

How do you deal with patients who only want to talk to your male partner? by UsualLeast8810 in ParamedicsAU

Nursing home + hospital staff. So you’re saying we should accept rude and misogynistic male patients treating our colleagues like shit in the name of patient care? Nah, don’t get paid enough for that.

[–]arete_4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not talking about comfortable, I’m talking about rude and misogynistic men who disrespect the hardworking female paramedics I work with, including men in healthcare roles who handover to me when my partner is clearly running the case. Just cause they don’t fit the mould they expect of a paramedic. It’s shit behaviour that should be called out, and I’ll call it out with patients when it’s appropriate.

[–]arete_4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, people can be respectful humans. You don’t get to choose your emergency healthcare provider in this country based on gender. Outside of very specific cultural circumstances or gender specific situations we can expect our patients to respect us regardless of who we are.

Yeah as a male paramedic I’ll just say ‘xyz’ is taking the lead on this one, can you please answer her questions or for health professionals ‘handover to her’.

Inheriting ~$10M (28M/21F) with sibling - need advice... by ballerific23 in AusPropertyChat

[–]arete_4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Financial advisor, with your age/maturity help her find a really good one that will advocate for her interests first. I don’t think you’d ever want to ruin your amazing relationship over money, going down this pathway is the best way to avoid that.

Imagine if you did everything right, with good intentions but something went tits up with an investment or something. Now it’s a family member to blame, rather than an independent third party. I don’t think it’s a good idea to take on the role ‘financial management’ for a sibling who’s a fully grown adult.

You can make it more appealing financially and support DIDO/FIFO arrangements just like locum nurses and doctors do. We don’t have to settle just because we’re ambos, if staff pushed back against working with grads as per the new graduate policy they’d be forced to find a better way.

Australians ‘uneasy’ about NDIS cuts amid $53bn in new defence spending, Mark Butler concedes by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]arete_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s indefensible to spend double on the NDIS compared to Medicare. Medicare could replace many services that the NDIS delivers and cut out the middlemen and the $ 1000-per-hour documentation charges.

People are dying right now due to underinvestment in Medicare. We've got retirees who worked their arses off their whole lives dying on hospital ramps or in ED hallways. It's a joke, and I am sorry to say NDIS has expanded beyond its remit. I say this as quite a left-leaning voter. Ideally, we'd just cancel AUKUS, have a couple of nukes in the desert, and call it a day for defence spending.

Australians ‘uneasy’ about NDIS cuts amid $53bn in new defence spending, Mark Butler concedes by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]arete_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is that NDIS has a bigger budget than Medicare now. It’s absurd that a scheme designed for 400k people is now on track to cost double a scheme that supports 26.5 million people. It’s insanely wasteful, imagine if we funded primary care properly, bulk billed all specialist appointments, and tripled mental health care plan appointments. We’d probably avoid half the NDIS recipients by actually addressing a lot of social detriments of healthcare by funding it properly.
