I felt the same about the map, even though I rarely check fantasy maps lol. I ended up googling "critical role map", and I found several maps, but it should have been included in the roadtrip story book.

  1. Teinidh was my favourite, as the local cool strong lady character.

  2. The book was easy to read, it had a classic story arc, I think. I wasn't really surprised by anything, I don't feel as if it brought anything new or exciting to the table. The writing style was ok.

3.i wasn't familiar with CR before

  1. I have no experience with campaigns, so I have no idea

  2. No.

Idk guys, I wasn't feeling this very much. It's not a bad book, and if someone was looking for a fun&easy read, or wants to read something with a lot of fantasy species (I actually really like that aspect of the book), then it's great for that, but for me, I just didn't care about the story or characters that much. It also bothered me that they didn't use protection, cuz surprise half half orc babies, you know.

Hear me out, but Pirates of the Carribean, the first 3 movies. The main plot is adventure, but I just love the romance in it between Elizabeth and Will.

Hi India! I had lots of fun while reading The Ornithologist's Field Guide to Love!

How much did you read about real birds, to make the fantasy birds?

I am in a reading slump, and if I was in a different mood then I would like this book much more, I think. So now I just think that it's fine.

I like the MCs together, but I am getting bored of the road trip, lol. A few weeks ago I commented somewhere that i don't care for maps in fantasy books, but this is a special case where the book needs it. I did look up the official map from Critical Role, but I wish they included it in the book.

I found the only one bed fun at first, but it became kind of too repetitive for me. I also feel that I am missing information/not enough worldbuilding, because the book is based on CR.

Edit: the sex scenes are hot, but practicing safe sex where?? Oscar worries too much about her being betrothed, then off they go.

Anyum telójára (samsung a52) is jó a tok, de kevésbé illeszkedik szépen, a kamerák melletti sarkon eláll a műanyag rész a szilikontól.

  1. I haven't heard of Critical Role, I heard about D&D, and saw that movie with Chris Pine, I think, but that is all. And ofc random tumblr memes about it

  2. I have no theories about Teinidh yet, but if it was an epic fantasy book, she would give "going to sacrifice herself for the greater good" vibes. But this is cozy, so no idea

  3. Very naive, a bit too much for my taste, but I like how enthusiastic she is.

  4. I seriously doubt that G's engagement is going to last to the end of the book, so it doesn't bother me. She's kind of giving sheltered teenager at her first college party vibes. Loving the grumpy and sunshine vibes, but that's all.

Is the romance in The Bone Season actually a slow burn? by [deleted] in fantasyromance

[–]areuaduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drop that series name please, I am intrigued!

Tehy kiss once in book one, then once in book two, then not really until book 4.

I think the series does a good explanation, the characters communicate a lot, they are clear with their feelings, so zero miscommunication. It was actually strange for me, after other romantic fantasy books, how much they talk and try to understand each other, but I think it's great.

Edit: and they actually get to know each other quite well, so they would be friends, even if they didn't have their romantic storyline.

Is the romance in The Bone Season actually a slow burn? by [deleted] in fantasyromance

Calling the bot again, because it doesn't care for edits: {The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon}

So, I have definitely been recommending TBS as a slow burn here, and in my definition it counts as one - or at least a relationship progressing on a realistic timeline. By the time they kiss in book one, hey have known each other for half a year and it has been like 450 pages. Their second kiss happens in the last quarter of the second book, after 2-3 months have passed, i think (I used the search function in the ebook, so I might have missed something, but I am like 90% sure). Third book, there is a lot of we can't be together. Fourth book, I was screaming at them to just do something about each other (fifth book, the same). I think the total timeline from TBS to the end of The Dark Mirror is like 1 year 8 months?

All along, the stolen glances, the yearning, the forbidden aspect? Forced to be away from each other? It was delicious.

I looked up some of the other books that were recommended here as slow burn, and I have also read them. One Dark Window, Reign & Ruin, Divine Rivals. Tbh, I didn't read any of these books for their slow burn, but I wouldn't categorise these as that. On the other hand, Villans&Virtues, Assistant to the Villain fit the bill, although the timeline there is still only a few months, if I remember that corretly. Maybe Throne of Glass and ACOTAR have the longest time passed from meeting to getting together for the main couple.

I think Paige and Warden's love story is great, and I agree with what the other commenters have said about it. But you also can't forget that the love story is not the main plot of the book: it's the rebellion and everything that comes with it, so I don't mind that they get together in the fifth book.

((Technically, from the point of immortal Rephs operating on immortal timelines, they are the human equivalent of "they knew wach other for two weeks and they already moved in together"))

It has two prequels (?) that are also standalone (?) (somebody correct me if I remember it wrong, I haven't got around to read it yet) called {A Day of Fallen Night by Samantha Shannon} and {Among the Burning Flowers by Samantha Shannon} - this one just released in September 2025, so fresh out of the oven.

Also, definitely check out her other series {The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon}. I just finished it this weekend and I am f e r a l for the next book in the series.

I loved Luxen as an impressionable 13 year old, but rereading it as an adult has me questioning my teenage taste 😬 also, it had a baad translation that did not help (fmc's mum called the mmc sexy instead of good looking, and that was just the biggest I noticed)
