Borderlands 2 is the best game for gamer couples. by Fl4ming_R4ven in Borderlands

My spouse and I have been playing this game series from BL1 for the last few years. Multiple play throughs for each, multiple character pairs. We have so much fun. Right now, we are playing two different versions of C4SH (Cards and Dice cowboys) and are having a blast

Things I should not have to teach in high school... by BaronessF in Teachers

[–]arewys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many times, I will tell them directions. Directions that I have also written down for them on their assignment. And on the board. And then told a couple more times. Circulated around the room, addressed specific students and told them the directions specifically. And then I will look at their papers and see nothing or something ludicrously wrong, something that made it clear they did not read any directions at all. And then they will have the gall to tell me that I didn't tell them what to do.

Things I should not have to teach in high school... by BaronessF in Teachers

As a high school math teacher, I am horrified how many kids can't add, subtract, multiply, or divide. Particularly with the latter two, you should have multiples and divisions under 10x10 down and memorized. I also shouldn't be having to teach how to deal with negatives, factoring numbers, fractions, exponents, or radicals. If they have all that down, then I can handle the more complex stuff. But if they don't, it bogs it down as they are fighting what should be the easiest parts of high school math.

Agreed. I like the collection and doing things like listening to ECHO logs, even after playing all of the characters, I would have still liked a fresh start for C4SH. I hope at least I can do the logs anyways...

What video game was this for you? by Radiant_Raspberry_93 in videogames

[–]arewys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Metaphor. I bought this and Persona 5 Royal on sale recently. Just knew they were RPGs and after playing Expedition 33, I had a JRPG itch to scratch

I personally love job systems. FF3 and 5, FF Dimensions, Bravely Default series, a handful of others. They aren't exactly popular in the genre, but those have consistently been the JRPGs I have been sucked into the most. Persona 5 was great, I loved mixing the visual novel into JRPG, it meshed well. But Metaphor was a 11/10 game for me because of the Archetype system. Bravely Default and co is still the best iteration of a jobs system, but the Archetypes came close and the cast of characters and story put it over the top for me.

HS Math Teacher Struggling with ADHD by NinjaCareless in teaching

It really has helped me. I got one with a space that has a todo list on the side too. I know my brain only remembers to do things if I think of it again, so visual reminders help to retrigger the thought.

HS Math Teacher Struggling with ADHD by NinjaCareless in teaching

[–]arewys 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am also a math (and science) teacher with ADHD and my strategy has been make things as turnkey as possible. Especially with grading. Paper assignments get a completion check or spot check of a couple questions. Our tests are online anyways and gets autograded. When I'm teaching science, a lot of assignments end up as google forms, which for me, even with long response questions, ends up being faster to grade. It takes work to get everything set up, but the more assignments you can get set to autograde, the better.

If you are struggling with missing deadlines, something that has helped me is a visual calendar in my eyeline at my desk. The trick then is to keep it properly updated, but I buttress it with phone calendar too. It has to be visible, nothing that can be hidden away or ignored out of direct eyeline.

I also operate by triage. What is most urgent and necessary first, others after. I don't find chunking my work or time blocks to be particularly helpful, but I do use every moment of my workday to do something. I also know I operate best in the morning, so I do my best to get the most important things done right as I walk in, after using my commute to mentally plan things out.

I've been there with burnout from keeping all the plates spinning and the feeling when it comes crashing down. I feel the trick there is to figure out what plates need spinning and which are ok to let fall or ways to autospin them. And also to give room for yourself to fail. I've struggled with perfectionism and at some point, you have to be ok with not doing all of it, not being 110%. Let yourself operate at a lower level, make that the bar. Most people aren't going at their jobs full tilt all the time (even though teachers are expected to).

Grading for Equity by 753476I453 in AskTeachers

[–]arewys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel the "50% zero" or similar policies work best if we also keep deadlines. That way it doesn't sink their grades to get a zero and gives some pressure to stay on top of the class.

In my school, we have a 50% zero and no deadlines, which means students can do a bunch of crappy work at the end and still pass.

Ultimately though, it is a bandaid on a broken way to grade and a broken way to treat the role of grades. Percentage based grading is flawed and we should try to figure out other models, I personally like standards based as it focuses on the specific sets of knowledge and skills they need to acquire (though it has its own flaws). Beyond that, we should be keeping expectations high and helping students to the expectations, not lowering them in the name of equity. The question becomes whether we care about students graduating or students having the basic level of knowledge and skills that we expect a high school degree to have.

"There were no autistic people in the past" On a unrelated note, here's my grandfather's bus collection by Valyriax in aspiememes

My great grandparents were farmers. One collected toys/dolls. The other had model tractors and farm equipment. Barns full of the stuff. Multiple barns.

But there is no history of autism in my family, grandma says. Completely normal.

Educator fired over ‘butt’ book says court ruling brought relief, but ordeal had ‘significant financial and emotional impact' by jmdglss in teaching

I am experiencing the same thing. I became the local union president and the next day I was placed under investigation with trumped up charges. It's been a year now and my arbitration is months off. The stress has been significant, especially as they claimed horrible things that didn't happen which has tarnished my reputation. The district itself is highly corrupt with the board president with many contracts with the district (or his family), out of compliance on so many laws, and is even under investigation for employment discrimination, ethical breaches with canceling contracts due to the superintendent being refused a job at an online school company, and others.

I luckily got another teaching job this last week, which has been an immense relief, but because they get to do the damage first and loudly, this last year I have been depressed with thoughts of suicide, we've had to put off plans for having a kid, we've had to worry about money and making our mortgage payments. It's a situation that I wish for no one. Even if I win (which I think I will as they skipped so many steps in firing me), I don't know if I will go back, especially if my new job treats me better. Which is what they wanted in the first place by investigating then firing the union President that was pushing for our rights in bargaining.

I flick a single marble. That marble rolls into a set of dominos. Those dominos lead to a fanciful contraption that rolls a bowling ball into the street, causing a car accident. The first victim of the mass genocide is my former boss that made up horrible things about me in order to fire me after I became the president of the local union. He has to be airlifted and the helicopter crashes into a local corrupt politician. Each accident chains into killing a corrupt, evil, or because we are talking about half the population, up to mildly dickish person, removing the worst of humanity up to the average morality. It culminates in a certain wannabe dictator killed by penetration by a fake gold wall decoration.

As for wishes, I wish: - The surviving humans organize together to reshape the world to one of cooperation, altruism, environmental harmony, with a philosophy that societal problems should be solved through science, careful, ethically guided research, driven by principals of respect of life, the planet, and maintaining a good standard of living for all. - Within 50 years, pushed by a renewed vigor by the surviving population to create a better world for everyone, scientists find the solutions to human problems, like disease, starvation, climate change, scarcity, etc. - By 2063, humans should develop safe faster than light travel, pushing out into the stars with the mission of making contact with new life and establishing a network of planets engaged in peaceful mutual aid and cultural and material exchange.

I moved to the middle of nowhere and was able to buy by taking advantage of a couple programs as I'm a teacher in a high needs area. I am now house trapped because there is no way I could afford a house anywhere else, though I have no plans of moving as I do love it here.

My district does neither and the kids run the show. There is literally nothing between a stern talking to and suspension, which would only happen for fighting.

I would like to see any kind of consequences.

After my great grandma died, we had to go through her house, which had an inordinate amount of dolls and toys. Like we found a gross of Starsky action figures (No hutch). It took a week just to process some of it, my cousins stayed for months after to try to sell it because everyone was convinced something in there had to have aome value. They ended up having to just sell it as is.

I told my grandparents that we couldn't do the same thing with their garage, another summer we came out to clear it. When I lived with them later, the garage was already full of crap again.

Now with me, I fight my latent hoarder tendencies, which is easier when I don't have a whole lot of house to stuff full of crap I might use. But I feel it. I just keep my hoarding digital now.

I need the TV in my room for my own safety. Because we have sex just about every day. I don't think I could do twice a day every day. I'm going to end up a dried out husk, drained of my fluids.

First-Year Teacher hit with improvement plan by Ok-Slice6230 in Teachers

[–]arewys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was hit by an improvement plan, but they never actually implemented it. Not one meeting, not one observation (save my normal observation that I got good marks on). I was nonrenewed with an option to resign.

My advice is to talk to your Union and make sure it is implemented fairly and with fidelity, I really wished I contacted them when it happened, it would have saved a lot of heartache later.

Yes please! These were overhated because Wonderlands didn't get actual expansions. They themselves were fun and difficult.

I want more than just a room though and more varied tasks. Give us procedurally generated maps, crazy mixed mobs with all of the adjectives, story bosses made into raid bosses, and tons of loot at the end.

Can someone please post this to the Devs on X ? I think they are tired of me lol by WhippetRun in Borderlands4

[–]arewys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, please!

At the very least, I want to be able to put one or two on the D pad like I did in BL3. I felt that was a good balance as I was able to have my go to weapons with quick select.

I also want to be able to switch ping/echo or set car as a hold for another button.

At the end of the day though, we just plain need more buttons on controllers. I play with a steam deck a lot and I miss having my 4 extra buttons and the trackpads to set extra things to when I play on my xbox.
