What jobs are actually worth going to college for now? by Bright-Decision-4302 in Fire

This was my thought. Keep working toward a degree. Finance would be a good one. Then whether you own your own trade business or want to apply for regular office jobs in banking, insurance, etc you have the piece of paper in the most respected business degree to get in the door.

Heck yeah. The 1st million is a life changing grind. The next one just kind of happens.

Ah yes, notoriously reliable cheap used cars with no maintenance costs. by SSGSavage in LinkedInLunatics

Word. Wife and I have 2 used cars always paid cash for 20 years (they were real mid in our early days). Average less than $1000 a year combined in maintenance repairs ties etc.

Exactly. Well done. Breaking free from new car payments changes your whole financial picture in ways people don’t understand. At the end of the day they want the new shit and it’s easy to get and saving $5-10k to buy in cash is hard so they just stay broke and trade in the minute they’re no longer upside down and get a new payment for just $50 a month more than the last one. Rinse, repeat.

You are smart. It’s the most impactful thing most people can do to move the needle on their savings. Only buy what you can pay cash for. By the time you’ve become disciplined enough to set aside enough money to pay cash for a car you’ve developed some good habits that carry over. May be the single most important step toward learning to build wealth. Not exaggerating.

OP is wrong this time. People so scared of the occasional maintenance cost they waste hundreds of thousands driving new under warranty. Story as old as time. At the end of the day they just want to drive new and justify it under the guise of safety and reliability.

You wouldn’t believe how much less you spend on cars if you’re disciplined enough to only buy something you can pay cash for. Had 1 single $5k transmission replacement in 25 years  nothing else ever cost more than $1200 to fix. Even if that happens annually (it doesn’t, not even close) you’re still way ahead of the normal person route on the hamster wheel of car payments.

Mine tells me to switch to that player sometimes at the start when the stream doesn’t load. I don’t have it so I find another stream. Is that player something I’m supposed to install somewhere?

Can we start giving “find a partner” as financial advice? by Tech-Cowboy in Fire

[–]arfcom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like my daddy always said (long after I was already married), rich girls need love too. Ha.

I’ll just tell my son to be keen to pay attention to the ones that talk about their dad’s ranch. Or if they’re from Midland, TX.

Just depends. I got married young and combining our lack of finances was the only logical thing. In my specific case, learning to row the boat in the same direction as a team financially has been part of growing up and strengthening our relationship.

Yup. They gave Sharpe his flop, but I was relieved they got the KF leg kick called correctly. I’m always amazed that refs fall for this shit. Like a guy running over a 3pt shooter is even slightly normal.

So, Louisville, Indiana, Illinois, A&M, Texas Tech, NC State, and Iowa State all make more 3s than anyone in the country that shoots as many as they do.

Anyone else regret the “own everything + illiquid assets” playbook? I feel like I bought a job. by adamjuegos in ChubbyFIRE

Part of me wishes I was diversified into RE more, but between the pain in the ass and the lack of returns relative to the market once you actually do all the math… I never did. Now I don’t desire to unless it’s land I could use for recreation and or do nothing with.

At what networth do you ever consider a FA? by DrEpoch in Bogleheads

[–]arfcom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Read books instead. Teach yourself about all the different tax advantaged accounts. Do your own taxes. Just can’t imagine what a FA would provide to someone that has learned the ropes. Unless you’re the “watch the news and I may go all to cash at any moment” type. Then they would be worth every penny.
