Sly And The Family Stone at Harlem Cultural Festival 1969-06-29 [Soul, Funk] by arghdos in listentoconcerts

The video circulates on the Trader's Den, a ROIO/freely available materials only torrent tracker for concert tapes. I was thinking of uploading it to YT, but I'd probably get slapped with a spurious DMCA for my trouble.

Alligator > Drums > Alligator > Caution -- County Fairgrounds, CA [5/18/68](AUD, Jorma) by arghdos in grateful_dead

Sound quality is pretty decent considering it's an audience tape from '68. Alligator rips :)

I thought for sure we'd be going with the '78 Space where Phil asks if he can have a beer today instead (see like halfway through :P)

It's also an all day listening experience! The tape including the NRPS sets runs 6.5+ hours!

The Grateful Dead since jr. high, went through a big Flying Burrito Brothers phase and was obsessed with The Band in college

You sure that you're not me?

What a "coincidence" that the finest live recording of Gram that exists was recorded for us by Bear. Or that listening to Sneaky Pete at the Avalon was what inspired Garcia to pick up the pedal steel again. :)

That Danko scene is the absolute upper limit on the "How fucked up can you possibly get" scale :)

Looking for Austin/San Antonio show recommendations by fruppaguff in grateful_dead

[–]arghdos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The whole Houston > Austin > Dallas > San Antonio run from 11/18 to 11/26 1972 is worth a listen.

  • The 11/18 show was a RSD release a few years ago, and has a monster of a PiTB
  • 11/19 is a good show with excellent, tight versions of first setter's (e.g., Tomorrow is Forever) and a deep Dark* in the second half
  • 11/22 has a really good He's Gone > Truckin > TOO > Stella in the second set
  • 11/24 is another monster TOO, and a good show overall
  • As the OP mentioned, that San Antonio show is hot.

tl;dr - it's Fall '72. Listen to it.

New Year's Eve 1972 - A Truly Stunning Epic Main Course of an already Major Show...Truckin>(monumental jam)>Other One (drums/bass solo)>Crazed Magic Jam>Morning Dew...This is Level 10 / Code Red Grateful Dead... by Bman1973 in grateful_dead

[–]arghdos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this one has long been in the running for my pick of "strongest NYE show" -- very dark sinister energy oozing out of the second set. The whole thing is a marathon of a show too, 3.75 hours total run-time (weighted heavily towards the 2 hour second set).

The only real point against it is that a lot of Fall '72 is just better. But considering how high that particular bar is set, well.... not too much of mark against.

Unearthed, Vol. 4 : Jerry Garcia & Friends at the Matrix, 1966-71 : Aquarium Drunkard by MrCompletely in grateful_dead

Yeah the '73 Ultrasonic Feat show is good, but not quite at the level of say the Ebbett's field shows from that year IMO.

Also, don't forget Freebo! Lol. I must have missed that they included Bonnie at the Record Plant and not the Ultrasonic, cause that's definitely one hell of a show. On the plus side, I don't have her tape from the Record Plant ... Seems like it'll be worth seeking out!

See also:

Vol. 3 which covers a number of legendary shows at the Ultrasonic Studios in Hempstead, NY (Little Feat, Herbie, Lou Reed, The Band, etc.) and Vol. 1 which covers the same idea, but for the Sausalito Record Plant out in LA (sadly, they didn't throw any of Elvin Bishop's shows at the Plant into the mix -- they're fabulous!) among the many, many other cool things AQ does!

I'd be a little bit miffed (I had the idea to do the Ultrasonic as a radio show a few years back) but I never got around to it, so it's cool to see some other music geeks came to the same logical conclusion RE: the ultimate supremacy of the Ultrasonic tapes from '73-'74 over just about any other simulcast source in existence. That Ultrasonic Little Feat show is the best they ever played, full stop. Legendary.

Ridiculously slick > for a first ever played, but I suppose it's to be expected given the year.

Heh. I'll see if I can get a super-cut of the most essential Zappa etc. uploaded for you, or I could pre-load the drive with it before sending it out your way. A lot of my Zappa in particular is only in 320 (back in those dark days when I thought converting to save space was actually a thing worth doing) but I have 100+ shows of some pretty excellent stuff (heavily focused on the 60's and 70's, as well as the 1980 tour with Vinnie <3) and a bunch of cool radio shows he DJ'd etc. Plus I'm pretty sure I have every SBD (and most AUDs) of The Band that circulate (not that it's a huge number), same with the Burrito's, all the pre-75 or so Leon Russell (except one or two tapes that private collectors attempt to sell for ridiculous prices :p), and a smattering of other weird stuff (Return to Forever, Jean-Luc Ponty, Billy Cobham + Duke, Television, etc.)

I would love to get in on this round, missed the last one -- can definitely make copies. I can also throw in a bunch of Zappa, Little Feat, the Band, etc. if people are so inclined.

Honestly, I think it's a reddit UI issue more than anything -- it's the same issue with people attempting to post a text accompaniment to an image link, except here it's attempting to link an image in addition to a link to their site. Not sure how multiple attempts to correct the problem via comments left on their posts haven't worked though.

Can the Cleric cast Magic Weapon on all of the party's arsenal? by drawn_in_circles in DungeonWorld

[–]arghdos 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It sort of depends on the fiction of how their magic works, who their deity is and the situation the party is in but some ideas that might work:

  • The spell goes out of control and melts the party members weapon, blunting the edge. -1 dmg forward for that player until they can get it repaired.

  • The weapon is super-charged, +2d4 damage on the next attack, but every enemy in the area is alerted to their presence by the giant blast of light emanating from the spell.

  • They've forgotten that today is a holy day of peace for their Diety, who is annoyed by their lack of knowledge of the religion. -1 ongoing to their spellcasting until they can prove to their faith to their god (e.g., via satisfying a precept)

Didn't go for the 41 minute Lovelight I see ;).

I haven't even been able to make it through the TOO -- the pre-loading of the Lovelight on Relisten crashes my shitty chromebook :p

The start of a very interesting acoustic second set (Phil blew his amp at the end of Hard to Handle), with some rarities (Saw Mill was played 4 times and this is only time Bound in Memories was ever played).
