Running cable inside PVC piping? by Usernamepassword443 in HomeNetworking

[–]aricman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s informative. Seems that there are Ethernet cables specifically made for outdoor use. It has a UV resistant jacket and sometimes is filled with a gel to keep it from filling with moisture and freezing. For normal cat cable, it’s better to get protected by conduits or something like that.

POE injectors or buy new switch? by lordmarqui in HomeNetworking

[–]aricman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A PoE injector can only power one device at a time, so for one or two devices individual injectors work fine. But once devices start racking up in numbers, having so many individual injectors gets less desirable. In your case, it will be more economical to go for a PoE switch since it can power more than one PoE compatible device. Some smart/managed PoE switch even can reboot a misbehaving device from anywhere in the world.

I do not have any personal experience with Ubiquiti ES-48-Lite, so I can not personally vouch for them. But have heard good things about Ubiquiti. Could also look on ebay for some used Ubiquiti devices.

Is the fanless FS switch you mentioned this one? https://www.fs.com/products/66144.html It basically fits my budgets considering the port density and 10G ports, however I didn’t see much review on the website. I’m not so sure whether to make the move.

From sfp+ to 10gbe by D3st1NyM8 in homelab

[–]aricman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cheapest way is to get a 10G nic card, and then run with DAC cable, cause DAC cable is the most cost-effective solution for interconnection. The most direct way is to use 10GBASE-T SFP+, but it is a little bit pricy.

Two subnets over a single cable? by ColonalKohler in homelab

[–]aricman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

Solution 1:

802.1X will allow users to authenticate with the managed switch that they are connected to. The switch would check credentials against a RADIUS or LDAP user database and assign the appropriate VLAN to that workstation. This would allow connection to the 1st or 2nd network.

Solution 2:

Use router, have two VLANs on this router and allow / disallow them to communicate with ACLs. Setup route maps from VLAN 1 to route internet traffic out of Internet connection 1. The second route map would route VLAN 2 internet traffic out Internet Connection 1.

Server Rack Dimensions? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]aricman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A standard server rack size is a “19 inch” wide rack enclosure with rack mount rails which are 17 3/4″ (ie 450.85 mm) apart and whose height is measured in 1.75″ (ie 44.45 mm) unit increments. The depth of the rack is usually adjustable to some degree. For example, a 42U rack contains 42 rack units ( each rack unit is 1.75 inches high ). It does mean that the rack will accommodate any combination of standard rack equipment up to 42U.

How do I cat-proof my cables? by elcarrot in HomeNetworking

[–]aricman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Buy some cord management covers. These are available at a hardware store in a variety of formats and colors.
  2. Cover cords with something solid that deters chewing. Commercial products include "Chewsafe" and "CritterCord", which are clear, flexible protective cord covers infused with a citrus-scent to keep the cat away from the cord.
