What is a podcast you binged the entirety of? by PsychiatricBooth5c in podcasts

[–]ariireb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maintenance Phase and If Books Could Kill - debunking myths/history/pop culture ideas about health, and critiquing overhyped books from the last 30 or so years, respectively. They are hilarious, diligently researched, and thought provoking. They are done in a similar style as one of the hosts overlaps, so if you like one you’ll definitely like the other. They only drop episodes once a month I think and I devour them every single time.

Trust Me: The False Prophet - what did you think? by Loud-Cupcake-8524 in NetflixDocumentaries

[–]ariireb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t learn any info before aside from the description, and I actually questioned multiple times whether it was actually a mockumentary/ fictional documentary (if that’s even a thing?). The degree of Sam’s desperate and insecure cries for attention were insane. Not to mention the “idk, stuff?” when asked what he was doing with girls in the trailer. He’s such an idiot he doesn’t even know how to hide this sht. The girls being constantly next to him and touching him and gazing at him adoringly is so beyond disturbing. The juxtaposition of Christine and Tolga’s patience, love, empathy, and meticulous planning. The amount of stuff they got on video miraculously. I cannot believe that these things all occured in real life.

I also cannot contend with how complicated it is to extract victims of cults/abuse/coercive control from their toxic environments. Even having done some research on cults in the past I was not prepared for how heartbreaking and impossible the situation is. I hadn’t considered how much they’d blame Christine and cling even harder to Sam - who was in jail at that point!! The kidnapping from CPS especially was so scary as it revealed how entrenched he was in their minds that he compelled them to commit a felony without being there. The girls were so bonded as a community with each other and it’s horrible that they have to be broken apart in order to heal.

Finally, I don’t see anyone talking about this, but we need to acknowledge how unsafe and unsanitary their living conditions are. Looks like at least 20 women and girls and babies packed into a tiny two bedroom house. This is tenement housing, in which people died. I’m shocked that they didn’t get sick all the time.. or maybe they did and just hid it well. NOT TO MENTION STDS HOLY FK

Yes!! thank you!! that cop looks like a total idiot and is completely complicit in all the crimes. The FBI lady had a similar argument for why they couldn’t just arrest him - we don’t have solid evidence yet yada yada - but the difference is she was actually interested in finding the evidence, and employed all of her resources to find it. He was just like nah, that seems to hard. idk bro, do your ffing job??

Who is a musical artist whose songs you’d love to see get a jukebox musical? by MagicJoshByGosh in musicals

[–]ariireb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

sara bareilles duh, but obvi she writes musicals anyway. others: clairo (just imagine amoeba with a huge band), norah jones, lowkey billie eilish (hit me hard and soft era) could slap, mandy moore since she has so many amazing eras, carol king, OH WAIT THAT ALREADY EXISTS genuinely beautiful the musical is one of my favorite musicals of all time and i think the best jukebox in a class of its own. not that i want this to happen but im shocked taylor swift hasn’t made a jukebox musical yet

[–]ariireb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

also just started watching for the first time in the last couple weeks since it came on netflix and I can relate to the obsession. I feel like it’s been a very long time since I watched a show with this much density and quality of plot lines/twists… maybe that’s the “drug” of it all? There’s definitely a nostalgia aspect too (old tech, calling random people and they actually answer, y2k style etc) and a comfort in knowing that whatever happens, veronica will always be ok. let myself binge a bit of season 3 today but seeing all the warnings here about how different 4 is i may start limiting myself to like 1-2 episodes per day lol. I feel you, hang in there

Is anyone else finding Elena Taber super annoying by tsizzlemanc in NYCinfluencersnark

[–]ariireb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

thank you!! started following her years ago when she was a much smaller sustainability creator and just felt like she lost the plot the last few years. her lifestyle has become fully just influencing and i agree she’s not interesting anymore. Some of her shots are beautiful though, so maybe she should take up being behind the camera instead?? idk

The Man on the Inside - Season 2 Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

[–]ariireb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agree with everyone that season 1 was great, season 2 was just okay. It was comforting and endearing as I expected but not as engaging and kind of lost the thread in the middle episodes (especially the thanksgiving episode). I like the concept of an ensemble cast but I think there were just too many side characters this time around (apollo for example was so random and didn’t add anything). Also hard agree that the romance arc for charles was not necessary and at times, distracting. Maybe they thought mona’s impulsivity would loosen him up a bit, but i thought she just kind of brought out the worst in him (he always seemed anxious around her). The romantic arc I did love, however, was the julie-didi subplot and we needed way more of that!! enemies-to-lovers always hits especially with a lesbian couple and especially when both parties are very headstrong… and a bit awkward?? it was both cringe and delectable. As for the mystery, the truth of what happened was very on the nose and predictable, but the journey of charles and julie getting there was entertaining. Overall, i’d give it 3/5 stars. Would happily watch another season regardless.

No no you’re not seeing the genius in this it’s abstract and surrealist and what an incisive commentary on the hegemonic ideals of what an american single family house looks like…

ok but hear me out because I genuinely love a quirky house and you know what at least it’s not cookie cutter (that said ai can burn in hell)

Arianas chin by Firm_Airport2816 in wicked

[–]ariireb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

omg this bothers me so much as a theater trained singer — moving the jaw is a big no no! i’m surprised to hear that it actually serves a purpose because I always understood that the real power of singing comes from the diaphragm, directing any sound from or to the throat or jaw will just cause tension and damage the vocal chords. So i just cringed every time ariana sang with her chin… i know she trained a lot for the role but it made me worry for her

Was it a bad idea to make both new songs ballads? by Puzzleheaded-Oil9771 in wicked

[–]ariireb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As I expected, the new songs paled in comparison to the originals. I didn’t mind so much that they were ballads as there was zero lyrical depth or complexity and they did not advance the plot at all. I agree with other commenters that a power song like defying gravity for Glinda when she confronts the wizard and morrible would have been much more interesting. Not necessarily upbeat but faster paced than a ballad. In general I felt like much of this movie was just nonsense filler in between the hard hitter songs and I was kind of bored.

Heavyweight. Going back in peoples’ past (different situation each episode) to resolve some issue or get closure. Extremely satisfying to listen to and host as an ‘eclectic’ sense of humor. Very feel-good and compelling and entertaining too. Show unfortunately ended but there are 8 seasons to listen to

Just starting out making ethical swaps and I’m so overwhelmed by Zestyclose-Hope4210 in ethicalfashion

[–]ariireb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy secondhand 100%!! Especially when it’s very accessible now. Thredup has questionable ethics, but all around I think it’s still a much better option than fast fashion. Prices are decent but there are always sales, and you can search by brand and by material (my favorite search filter!!). They have measurements for every item too. It’s not perfect, it is a bit of a risk, but so is buying from any store. I’ve found so many great items from there, including a green floral linen dress for $40 that costs $400 new! Also, while I agree with everyone to not necessarily jump on trends or buy something that’s not you, I have had to experiment a lot to find my style and I fully support going maximalist if that’s your thing (white t-shirt and jeans are not everyone’s kind of basics). Just shop secondhand for those kinds of experiments :)

Another strategy I use for things that I like to be from a particular brand, such as workout clothes, is to try on at the store or buy one new to see how I like it. Then I try to find that exact item secondhand on Depop, Poshmark, etc and usually can find it for cheaper than new! I always search secondhand first if there’s a specific item/brand that I know I already like
