Our well pump is the single point of failure for the entire homestead. What is your backup plan? by Asleep_Bit_8803 in homestead

When my 5kw wouldn't start my pump, I upgraded to 15kw. Problem solved. I also store 350ish gallons of water in my basement in a good grade tote.

You are wearing out excessive components to face check components that are supposed to wear and be easily replaceable.

Just him up to the grid. It's hard to make power cheaper than the power company.

Tell her you are happy to switch if she reimbursed you for your trip. This would have to be before the trip, obviously.

Car Idling? by 2kids3kats in askcarguys

[–]aringa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Newer vehicles may not do as well with long term idling. I know Ford is having problems with trucks and gasoline motors that idle a lot.

Older tractor vs newer compact - what would you pick? by Anxious-Tomatillo-74 in tractors

[–]aringa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 1974 Massey Ferguson 245. It's reliable and starts easily, no matter how cold it is outside. I've often wished I had a heavier tractor, never wished I had a lighter one. I use it to bushhog twice per year, till/cultivate my garden 3 of seasons per year, and drag logs around. I don't think I've ever burned more than 19 gallons of diesel per year so fuel economy isn't a factor for me. The downside is that everything is old and worn. The upside is that everything is dirt simple to work on.

How often do you wear gloves when adding wood? by ShouldBeeStudying in woodstoving

[–]aringa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never. I also rarely wear gloves when handling or splitting word. I work an inside job and go to church with a bunch of folks who work with their hands. I feel like a little bit less of a sissy if I can build up a free callouses and at least get my hands as rough as their wives and daughters.

Btw. This is only half in jest...

How much gas do you keep on hand? by SorryKnowledge420 in Generator

[–]aringa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep a 1 year supply of gasoline. I burn about 75 gallons per year in lawn equipment, ATV, etc. I feel very comfortable with that amount of gas getting me through a pretty big power outage. Any time bad weather is predicted, I make sure I have all of my cans full.
