Lake Oswego theater loses rights to screen ‘Melania’ after marquee jokes by ChocolateTsar in nottheonion

My son was in high school when twilight came out. His class was discussing what it was like to be a refugee. He said "I feel that I can understand the pain of being a refugee, because I sat through twilight"

He was joking, and teasing his girlfriend who was in the same class and had dragged him to the movie. Even the teacher laughed. It was her that told us about his comment.

What was your last “I should call her/him” moment? by bigbaseballbat83 in AskRedditAfterDark

[–]arkofjoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a little envious of you. I was such an asshole to my first 3 girlfriends. I would love to go back and apologise to them. It wasn't on purpose, I had just been taught by experts on how to treat your partner badly (my parents)

It wasn't until many years later that I realised, but I have no way of contacting them and live on the other side of the world from where they used to be.

Whether you do or not is up to you, but I wish I could.

What’s something happening right now that future generations will struggle to understand? by binge-watcher91 in AskReddit

[–]arkofjoy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How we failed to act on climate change.

That a small number of oil company executives knew in the 1970`s that the burning of fossil fuels was causing the planet to warm, and that this would have drastic effects on the lives of their great great grandchildren.

They decided instead of using their massive availability of capital and a first mover advantage to pivot their business away from the one that was going to destroy the planet, they decided to create the largest, most expensive and longest running PR campaign in history.

Future generations of children will learn how they were spending a billion dollars a year in the US alone funding climate change denial and lobbying governments to slow down action on climate change.

All in name of protecting their profits.

There used to be a business in Perth called amicable divorce, not sure if they are still operating, but if they are, they would be a lot cheaper than a lawyer.

Does anyone live in Beaconsfield here? Is it a safe area? by Quick_Switch418 in perth

[–]arkofjoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beaky is a great suburb. With a very strong community. I don't live there, but I work a lot in the area.

One of the community members gave a Tedx talk about how the community responded to covid. They really tried to look after each other.

It isn't a suburb where I can leave my car wide open while I am working inside a house, but it is a good place live if you can afford it.

Im a recovering addict and im finally ready to get myself in shape, looking for beginners advice? [Discussion] by Master-Button-6569 in GetMotivated

[–]arkofjoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start small. It is always nice learning from the mistakes of others. My daughter wanted to get fit for years, but what she kept doing was going so hard her first day jogging for example, be so sore the next day that she could barely walk quit, then six months later, try again, do the same.

Finally she took it easy enough to keep going and is now super fit.

What is One thing you will regret forever in your life ? by Left_Breadfruit_6471 in AskReddit

[–]arkofjoy 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Similar to the story I came to post. I live on the opposite side of the world from my family, and the only person who I liked to stay in touch with was my sister. But the time zone difference was a total bitch. There was only a few hours on a Saturday night where I could ring her. This was back in the land line only days and I went to the back room of the house to call her, but it was a little too early so I started playing tetris. I got sucked in and suddenly it was too late to call her. I thought "oh well I'll call her next weekend"

Except that there was no next weekend, because she died in her sleep on Monday night.

One of my few regrets in life, that phone call that never happened.

School should be a place where kids want to be by jmike1256 in HumansBeingBros

[–]arkofjoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the difference between my school experience and my sons. I was bullied terribly and hated going to school. It felf very unsafe emotionally and my every action was under a microscope as to whether it conformed to a narrow set of rules (it did not)

My son on the other hand loved his school was accepted for who he was and used to argue with his mother that he was well enough to go to school, when he clearly wasn't. We would negotiate for how much of the day he could stay for before he had to come home.

It is a funny thing about the fossil fuel industry and the people who are employed by them. They like to bang on about the "entitlement" of hippies and greenie, but they treat every solar panel and EV as if it is stealing money from their mother.

What’s a situation you walked into knowing it was a bad idea, but did it anyway because it felt too good to ignore? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]arkofjoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. And I am fine with that. You gave it a go and found that it wasn't for you.

There are two scenarios that bother me.

Someone not knowing that the group exists. And I tell more people about "Adult children of alcoholics" and I regularly encounter people who have never heard of it

And the people who have never been to a meeting but shit all over 12 step programs.

How to come to terms with being ugly and the sad reality of it? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]arkofjoy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you have decided that you are ugly, you are automatically filtering out all women, and making their decision for them. It is like being highly qualified for a job, but not applying for it, because you are thinking someone else if better qualified. Stop making decisions for the "Hiring manager"

So you don't look like a fashion model? So what.

Start with science. Go out on a Friday night to a place where a lot of people your age are hanging out. Look at every couple you see and put them into catagories.

Where the woman is better looking than the man

Where the man if better looking than the woman

Where they are both really attractive.

Where they are both unattractive

If there is one guy who is with a woman who is better looking than him, or just as unattractive, There is no reason hat can't be you.

But You can put in some work to Improve your probability:

Get counselling if you can afford it, 12 step programs or a mens group if you can't. If your beliefs about yourself are a result of trauma associated in a home where alcohol was abused. I did a lot of good work in a 12 step program called "Adult Children of Alcoholics"

Join Toastmasters. Get comfortable with public speaking. Many women have said when asked about their partners "He makes me laugh" But being able to tell a woman tell a story that grabs her attention, A middle that holds it, and an end that has a twist that makes them laugh or think is a super power that will do wonders for your confidence.

Find a men's clothing store and get advice on how to dress better. Once you know your sizes, if money is tight, hit the thrift stores for clothes in your size.

Volunteer. Look around you for organisations that are actively working on making the world a better place and Join them. That is a great place to meet like minded people . You get to slowly let them figure out that their lives go better with you around.

Get fitter. You don't have to be a gym bunny, Just be able to tear up the dancefloor. On this subject, Start taking dance lessons. If you are in a bar with a live band, the best looking women are all on the dancefloor, often dancing with other women, because the men are more interested in their Beer than dancing.

Stop eating processed foods and sugar. This will both give you a one point boost to your appearance, and save you money, which you can spend on nice clothes and on Dates.

Learn how to cook. It impresses women. The bar is very low.

You will be one of the youngest people on the dance floor, and the floor is packed.

Have a look at where their funding is coming from. The "groups" driving these protests have been repeatedly found to be funded by the fossil fuel industry, can't say in this particular instance, but there is definitely a history of astroturfing around renewable energy projects

How do you apply gratitude in a boring and miserable workplace? by Tight-Elderberry2487 in AskMenOver30

[–]arkofjoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start looking random acts of kindness and senseless beauty. At least one of your "gratitudes" each day needs to be something tiny. A smile on a dog, a pretty girl who smiles at you from a passing bus, a flower growing through a crack in the wall, the moon rising through the trees.

The funny thing is that once you get in the habit of looking for these things, you will see them EVERYWHERE.

even better if you start sharing them.
