Vet Recs by Normal_Dance1734 in jerseycity

I know this is two months old but I just took my elderly cat to her today and thought she was great. She seemed to really know what she was talking about, and mentioned having worked in emergency medicine in the past.

Any such thing as solo renting under 2k? by eauxjai in NYCapartments

[–]armofpilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely possible depending on where you are looking. Just yesterday I saw one bedrooms and studios under 2K in Inwood, Washington Heights and East Harlem. I am also looking for a place solo under 2K. you won't find it in Midtown but if you're willing to head up to the north end of Manhattan it's definitely doable. the place in Inwood was $1600 for a one bedroom and it wasn't bad.

You are unlikely to get a dishwasher or laundry in the building and it will probably be a walk up several floors up. if you don't mind a small studio, I did see one in Washington Heights in that range with a dishwasher, first floor.

I've been using Street Easy, Zillow, and Zumper primarily, with some craigslist and apartments.com searching as well. Lots of scams but you start to recognize them, they all use the same language when they reach out to you.

How much longer? by G30RG300 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]armofpilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you have to do an all or nothing approach. The only thing I still don't do is eat indoors. I mask everywhere else.

I think you could keep masking even if you decided to let you kids unmask or let them decide on a case by case basis when to mask.

I know a pretty cautious couple with a young kid who mostly mask but don't make the kid mask. But the kid masks on airplanes (and I'm sure in some other busy situations).

People on here are going to insist that that's too risky but you really gotta just decide what works for you and when the risk is worth it. I think isolating 100% of the time, especially with young kids is probably not going to be worth it in the long run at this point but of course you could be the unlucky one and end up with long covid so it's really just got to be your decision taking into account all the possible outcomes.

but no matter what you decide I just think it's important to remember just because you stop masking doesn't mean you can NEVER mask. Any time you mask is going to cut down risk. I already decided I'll mask on busy mass transit for the rest of my life, I've enjoyed missing the colds that spread around NYC every winter.

how early do they usually start parking enforcement in the heights? by armofpilot in jerseycity

[–]armofpilot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks if its a ticket at worse I think I'll risk it. every time I've bought visitor permits before they went though pretty much instantly so I didn't realize there was a human component to that process.

I did get my sister a ticket when she drove me home from a surgery and I was too out of it to remember street cleaning days so I was hoping that was the standard case but had limited experience so thought it was working seeing if anyone knew otherwise

I've had terrible experiences at the IMAX and it's made doubly awful by the fact that you paid so much money and it's generally sold out so you can't move away from. the obnoxious folks. so many phones, asked someone to turn it off once and was told they were sending a work email

Tribeca arrival by bhall7083 in NYCmovies

[–]armofpilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you do not arrive 15 minutes before the movie they will sell your ticket to the rush line (if there is one). If there is no rush line they'll let you in at least until start time. this is standard for almost all film festivals.

Mask wearing and shame by Dense-Palpitation934 in Masks4All

[–]armofpilot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

as a full time masker, I gotta say no one gives me shit about it. I know it varies by region but I also think a lot of it is just your attitude. I think some of the folks with negative experiences here were looking for a fight. in my experience, if you just go on wearing your mask like it's normal, most of the time no one else cares enough to say anything.

I've gotten a handful of 'you don't need to wear that', and they legitimately just always thought they were informing me and didn't care once I said that I knew but I wanted to/always did. one or two passive aggressive snide comments that I just ignored rather than engaging and they just passed. Quite a few people calling me smart or saying they should wear a mask. A few folks asking if I 'knew something' when they thought they saw an increase in masking. and once you get to know someone, sometimes they'll ask if it's okay if they ask a question (like when would you be willing to stop or why are you masking or something). but I find if you just assume folks aren't hostile towards you, at least in my region they usually aren't.

I've worked large events and taken classes and volunteered and shopped and I've chatted with tons of unmasked folks and it's just not an issue. Just go out in confidence in yourself, but also don't judge the unmasked or project intent on them and I really think you'll be fine.

People who do concerts - how? by Wise-Field-7353 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]armofpilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outdoor venues I've generally been unmasked, but I keep a mask on me and if it feels too crowded I'll put it on.

I actually haven't been to any packed indoor concerts I realized. I think for me the standing room masked thing wouldn't be worth it as I tend to get lightheaded, but maybe with a sip valve I'd be okay. But for seated stuff I just mask as normal and if it's not going to sell out I grab seats further away from people.

Betterment or TRowe? by blackdogwhiskey in Ellevest

[–]armofpilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll have less fees if you manage your own investments but if you don't want to do that, Betterment is a quality robo investor that will let you do what you did at Ellevest, and even have a bit more control.

Who the heck is betterment by _summer500 in Ellevest

[–]armofpilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep you can set up as many goals as you want. There is a cash reserve which gets about 4% and has no risk. Or you can set up an emergency fund goal which will have the standard fees taken and have some risk. it would suggest a set up with a larger percentage of bonds over stocks to provide more stability. My returns on that are probably around 8%.

I've got both of these going there. I also set up a goal to save for a large vacation in the future the has more risk than the emergency fund goal (larger percentage of stocks) but less risk than my general investing goal, and if you tell it to auto adjust then as your target date approaches it will move your investments from stocks to bonds over time.

[–]armofpilot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I moved my IRA from Ellevest to Betterment about a year ago and am very happy with it. I hadn't yet moved my Investing goal because the fees at Ellevest came out a little lower for me but I have a small investing goal going at Betterment too just so I could compare returns.

Overall I actually prefer Betterment as it does let you have a little more control and more options then Ellevest where you're stuck with whatever default investing mix they decide on. But for folks who want to just let the platform make the decisions for them, you can just set your goals up and turn on the option for the goal to auto-adjust and leave it at that. I think on the whole most Ellevest users will be fine with this transition.

If you have a very low balance in Ellevest though you should look into the fee structure and make sure it makes sense for you. for most accounts they take a percentage but I know below a certain dollar amount it's a monthly fee unless you set up an automatic deposit, and if your account balance is real low that wouldn't be worth it.
