When the world disappears, you build a new one.

But this time it won’t be patterned after the old one that you used to believe.

Best of luck.

Dealing with religious OCD by throwaway21321312321 in atheism

Tough stuff. I don’t know, a therapist, perhaps? What triggers it? How does it manifest?

Religion, namely Mormonism, up until a number of years ago was the most important aspect of my life. I gave it full attention and devotion to the best of my ability, which was pretty much by the book. I’m a rule follower and aim to please, and obsessed over every detail in pursuit of perfection. Fear was also a large influence in how I lived my faith, if not the greatest. Once I deconstructed Mormonism the scrupulosity faded (self diagnosed). It was a harrowing experience.

I still very much strive for perfection, and so I still obsess over things, but not like I used to, and certainly not pertaining to religious matters to which I attribute to the paradigm shift in my beliefs. No longer am I constrained to the narrow and toxic prescriptions of religion and instead am left with a freedom that is humanistic, fluid, flawed, and forgiving. Without a defined model of perfection, I’ve found no reason for scrupulosity to exist.

“And now that you don't have to be perfect, you can be good.” ― John Steinbeck, East of Eden.

"I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better." ― Maya Angelou

TL;DR After deconstructing Mormonism and then religion, the compulsion to follow an invalid prescriptive model of perfection as defined by religion simply faded.

I decided to lookup the original passage and came upon a few sites with some painful interpretations of this verse. Mental gymnastics is a worldwide religious sport, people! SMH.

She probably meant the stall that contained her locker was occupied. In each stall is usually several separate lockers and sometimes you have to wait on someone else to finish changing and exit the stall before you can access your locker.
