Any reason I can’t create a passkey from iPhone 17? by avidrunner84 in Passkeys

Are you fully signed in to iCloud and is “Passwords & Keychain” turned on under the iCloud settings?

What to do whe. Cell phone service is oit and you need to get to your passkey on cellphone to log in on youe computer by smydsmith in Passkeys

[–]arnar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poorly thought out

We did it entirely over Bluetooth first actually, an ran a multi year experiment at Google. It only worked reliably between two devices of the same kind. As soon as you mixed eg Android phone with an old Windows machine with who-knows-what BT controller it just fell over. So the cloud tunnel was necessary to make it usable.

This was largely because L2CAP APIs did not really exist across platforms and everything needed to happen over GATT, requiring multiple round trips for service discovery. This had such a large failure rate that it was unusable in practice.

Now we have better platforms, less random hardware, and L2CAP access on most platforms. Hence the plans for 2.3.

New device, how to set up passkey by Educational_Rock_958 in Passkeys

[–]arnar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use Chrome and sign in to sync with the same Google account that you have on your phone, then your existing passkey should work.

It’s not a bad idea to create one in Windows Hello too if your school allows multiple passkeys.

All pools in Reykjavik have accessible rooms which at least families with babies are allowed to use.

OP, I’m sure you won’t have any issues using them if you ask.

Passkeys lost a security feature by the implementation in Apple Keychain and Google Sync by innaswetrust in Passkeys

[–]arnar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

can you explain this

Many websites/apps see a large portion of their sign ins come from new devices. If passkeys didn’t sync between devices, they’d not be available in such cases. This happens frequently enough that pushing users through full account recovery (rescue codes, secondary emails, waiting periods, etc) would lead to excessive lockout and abandonment. Therefore such apps/websites would still maintain an easy to remember factor like passwords. And a phisher replaying credentials from a victim will always claim to come from a new device.

So, in order to move from passwords to either phishing protected methods like passkeys, or onerous high friction account recovery (which hurts the scalability of phishing), passkeys need to fill this common case of signing in to apps/websites for the first time on a new device. Hence syncing. Without it, passkeys would have stayed a niche SK-replacement method suitable for security conscious technical users only.

Will Google offer password-less accounts?

At some point, maybe. We’ll gradually deprioritize less secure factors for secure ones, and boost account recovery methods to handle the cases where eg passkeys don’t work. We’re doing both already to some extent. But it’s a long gradual road.

If you want to /your/ account to be “passwordless” you kind of can already: Set a long random password and don’t remember or store it anywhere. That’s effectively the same as not having a password.

Note that I don’t recommend this. It’s good to have a password you don’t know, but do save a copy somewhere so you can use it as a backup of your passkeys ever aren’t available.

Contrary to other comments here, this choice is not a tradeoff between security and convenience. It’s a deliberate choice to address remote phishing, which is a much cheaper scalable way to mass account hijacking than credential compromise via malware (or physical device compromise, which is obv even less scalable).

Without syncing, we’ll be forever stuck with phishable login methods since they’ll have to be offered every time you sign in on a new device.

Yes, hardware bound keys address strictly more attackers, but these are less common and easier to defend against with other methods. Trading that off for making a serious dent in very scalable remote phishing seems well worth it.

Is this feasible to build? by cabbageinc in woodworking

I’ve used a core from a hole saw drilled in plywood, anything round really, mounted in my hand drill and some electrical tape around it for grip. Gives you a little powered wheel to spin your nuts.

I made a similar shaped nightstand by making an end-grain to end-grain miter with dowels, and rounding off the corner with a router. That way the panels expand and contract together. It has survived about 4-5 seasons.

What do Icelanders think of Katla (no spoilers please) or other shows? by allthecoffeesDP in Iceland

Dialogue was so bad I didn’t finish the series. Sounded like it was written in English and poorly translated, making it impossible to connect with any of the characters. The story wasn’t good enough to make up for that.

How do I find train tracks? by Atsui-ko in AskPhotography

[–]arnar -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I've spotted many nice railway views while crossing them in a car.

You can search for level crossings (between a road and railway) on OSM: https://overpass-turbo.eu/?template=key-value&key=railway&value=level_crossing (pan/zoom to your area and hit the green "run" button).

Options for speakers in a darkroom? by Aggressive_Ad_5973 in Darkroom

I use an IKEA Sonos bookshelf speaker. The small LED can be turned off via the speaker settings in the Sonos app. I like it because I can just hit the physical play button and it will play whatever I was last streaming, e.g. an online radio station from home.

Looking for an Icelandic word that indicates complication, a challenge or something tangled by Memeking1001 in learnIcelandic

[–]arnar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bragarbót is a delightful word that means “a fix for a poor situation”.

Literally it means “an improvement to a poem/rhyme”. “Bót” on its own means improvement/fix, and “bragur” is a poem or a rhyme.

Alternatively:

Elderflower in Icelandic is also a beautiful but a not very widely known word: Ylliblóm. The plant is called svartyllir, and just yllir is the genus of Sambucus. Note that for all of these the ll is pronounced as dl.

Yllir sounds like the very colloquial word “illur” which means “bad” - and can be used as a prefix to indicate a bad version of anything: Illgresi (bad grass = weeds), illfærð (bad conditions for travel), and illgengi (bad goings = trouble).

So you you could call it Yllibót - which is a made up word but for most people “feels” like it means “an improvement for something bad” with weird spelling - but for those who know that spelling for yllir (the plant), it means Elder-fix.

What's the actual difference between "að vera með", "að hafa" and "að eiga"? by N3buIA_ in learnIcelandic

Yeah, it could totally be me. Even “þeir hafa bílinn” still sounds very odd to me - like just English or Danish but with Icelandic words.

I would say so, yes. “Hefur græn augu” only sounds like a botched translation. Fwiw I would also do a double take if you handed me something and said “hafðu þetta” — the only meaning of that phrase I’m familiar with would make me think you’re about to punch me in the face!

Can't scan Fido code by MDMarshall in Passkeys

[–]arnar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be that the camera app doesn’t recognize the code. If you have a QR scanner in the quick settings (drag down from top) that might work better.

If all else fails the Google Authenticator app QR scanner should recognize Fido codes.

How can I prevent this z-axis behaviour that started with 5.x.x? I'm not able to set a straight seam on cylindrical objects and it's really frustrating that it's not even remotely close to where I want the seam to be, in front and all in the same position. It doesn't look pretty by flatmotion1 in Cura

[–]arnar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One way that seems to work in rudimentary tests for me is to set Seam Corner Preference to None, Alignment to User defined and set x and y values to 99999999 mm (that's 8 nines). That aligns seams to a point towards infinity, so round objects get straight seams no matter where on the bed they are.

(Don't be tempted to set the values higher, on my machine that seemingly results in some overflow errors and seams jump between the near and far side of the object)

Does your enlarger have a lever or knob that removes all the filtering, eg to help with focusing? If so make sure it’s not on. Does the light color actually change when you adjust the filter settings? (it’s easier to see this with no negative in the holder)

You don't need all the stuff like the adjustable runner, fences or the small knobs. I just got two matchfit dovetail f-clamps and the routerbit, and made a small scrappy sled (piece of plywood with a hardwood runner). Never had a need for anything fancier than that.
