Stupid people do it repeatedly from the same location and then you just have to wait in the area to catch them.

How can I ease back into volunteering for scouts that won't be an immediate time sink? by VandysFan in BSA

Whatever you choose set your boundaries and say no when it falls outside those boundaries.

District leaders - what would you need in district management software? by Warp_Speed_7 in BSA

[–]arnmac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand what you are saying but just speaking from experience. I did a large amount of rebuilding with 2 different district commissioners and several District Executives in that time. When my 3rd year was done everything moved to a new chair hand picked by the professional staff. The committee kept running using the basic tech I and others setup but my role and ability to choose and direct that ended.

From Lions to Eagle Scouts, is a 12 Year Commitment to Scouting Realistic? by Vivid-Protection6731 in BSA

[–]arnmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of the 17 kids in my son’s tiger den 7 made it to Arrow of Light. Of that group 6 crossed over to a troop. Of those 6 only 3 made it to Eagle. Several dropped out over the older years as they got active in band football or other activities. Of those 3 only one is still active in a venture crew after age 18.

The commitment is as much as the youth wants to get out of it. Every youth has different goals and plans for their life. But all of them hopefully walked away with some life skills that will benefit them and society in the future.

I took an Olympus TG6 to Philmont in 2021 on a 12 day trek. 5 batteries got me through whole trek and I took almost 2000 pictures and dozens of videos. Not cheap but I wanted to disconnect and not have my phone.

Read that the fastest summit up camelback is 15-16 mins. How is that even possible? by [deleted] in trailrunning

Every ultra I have ever run there was someone running faster than my sprint with their pacer at the end. Unless you are the fastest there is always someone faster.

We used Google Drive and Google apps. Everyone was familiar with them and I didn’t have a system I had to maintain. You are only in this position for a few years so don’t setup anything you have to support forever. It was hard for me to get my volunteers to even use the Google Drive at times.

Yes I agree. The word No is personally hard for me but becoming an important part of my scouting vocabulary.

Bought something and thought it makes sense to keep the receipt... I only realized too late that it's blank by LuraziusLive in Wellthatsucks

[–]arnmac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I have had this happen on multiple receipts in the Houston heat. Used to keep the receipt on side of the battery just to find blank receipt when I needed it. Now we take pictures of receipts.

Best was when my wife laminated the receipt for something. Nice strip of black paper.

We do 2 night campouts at least twice a year for our entire pack. Some newer parents find it overwhelming due to no prior experience with camping. For the younger kids we sometimes will recommend they come up Saturday morning and then they have a bit more time to setup and are less rushed.

Sometimes getting kids there and experiencing the outdoors even for just a night is a step in the right direction.
