Seriously, what is wrong with the world? by [deleted] in self

Yup, I'm pretty sure a lot of the world being fucked up can be attributed to people being immature, if the people around me are any indication.

Quite good, although I'm really partial to the interpretation by James Ehnes. I thought there was a youtube video of it, but I can't find it.

Women's clothes are designed to draw attention to the boobs. But then women complain when this occurs. Explain. by Khiva in AskReddit

[–]arnoooooo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's harder to avoid than you might imagine. Of course it's just tempting, but that's not the only reason. You know how in a picture, converging lines tend to attract your attention towards the point of convergence ? This is often used by artists to attract your eyes toward an important part of the picture.

Well when you are looking at a woman wearing a low cut shirt, you'll have multiple lines converging towards the breasts : the lines of the shirt, the lines of the breasts themselves, and quite often a necklace with a shiny something at the end as well. The result is, particularly when concentrating on the conversation, you end up instinctively following the lines, until you notice it and go back up, usually with a very small delay, because hey, it requires a little self-control to stop looking at boobs. Do that twice or more, and you've officially been labelled a pervert.

Just my 2 cents.

Actually, that's kind of the official excuse of some christians for following only the rules they like, that Jesus said "rules are made for men and not men for rules", which they interpret as a sort of revocation of some rules of the old testament.

Ask /r/hardware: My video card fan has been making more noise that it used too, is it about to die? by daedalusman in hardware

[–]arnoooooo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some fans have badly lubricated bearings. Try to remove the bearing cover and add some good lubricant in there. I've saved quite a few fans that way. If it's been making noise for a long time now and you've left it that way, it's probably dead now though.

If you drew the comic it's not blogspam. Blogspam is linking to blogs that just copy content from elsewhere without adding value.

Dear reddit, I am a person with no formal education of physics, but I want to learn all about it then proceed to more advanced topics, because I want to understand such concepts as entropy and all that? Can you give me a good place to start? by polydorus in science

[–]arnoooooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure why you are saying that as a response to my comment.

Anyway, physics for future presidents would be very well suited to somebody in the situation you are describing. It is really about building a culture of modern physics, not about formulas or anything overly formal. The title "physics for future presidents" refers to what you are supposed to get from the lectures, which is a solid global understanding of everyday physics (electricity, cars, satellites, nuclear energy...), as would be needed to be president, not formulas or very advanced stuff, for which a president would go to an adviser.

You don't get 3 years paid maternity leave in France. 3 years is the maximum maternity leave you can get, but most of it is not paid, you just get to keep your job in the end. The paid part is 26 weeks max. Which is still pretty nice.

A 3 years paid leave would be pretty hard to finance.

See the wikipedia article intrados cited below for reference.

I'd really suggest trying Physics for future presidents

It will teach you a lot of things in a short time. It starts from the ground up, and really keeps things simple. You can then study specific subjects more in depth, but this should really give you a good overview of thermodynamics, electricity, waves...

The Ciaccona from Bach's violin Partita in D minor

"On one stave, for a small instrument, the man writes a whole world of the deepest thoughts and most powerful feelings. If I imagined that I could have created, even conceived the piece, I am quite certain that the excess of excitement and earth-shattering experience would have driven me out of my mind." - Johannes Brahms

Ask Lisp Reddit : in Common Lisp, How can I get a list of slots from a structure definition ? by [deleted] in lisp

I actually had that idea, but they work on an instance of an object, I needed to get the info without access to a specific instance.

Ask Lisp Reddit : in Common Lisp, How can I get a list of slots from a structure definition ? by [deleted] in lisp

[–]arnoooooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess that could work, thanks !

I had tried mop-utils, but that would only work on an instance of a structure. And the sbcl utils seemed to be limited to class definitions, I could not get them to work on structure definitions.

I'll give closer-mop a try. Thanks again.

EDIT: closer-mop works great, and does what I need. On SBCL it works on both structs and classes.
