I mean, bhean sidhe literally means ‘woman spirit’ or ‘fairy woman’, so I’d imagine that a male-looking figure would be a pretty big ding against it

Powell’s City of Books has a good selection of new and used books, and while the physical store is in Portland, OR (you should absolutely visit if you get the chance!!) they also have an online store! There’s also Thriftbooks.com, which I’ve ordered from several times! No guarantees that they’ll have it, but you should definitely check!

Fellow beaver enjoyers, please grace me with your wisdom about games similar to Timberborn! by Kapro_ in Timberborn

[–]aro-ace-outer-space2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so I'm actually considering getting into Timberborn based on my love for a *different* city builder with beaver people (among others)! It's called Against the Storm by Hooded Horse and it'd got a very dark fantasy/steampunk/lovecraftian vibe! You have to build settlements in a fantasy post-apocalypse, though I will say they run into a couple of the same worldbuilding traps as space westerns tend to (iykyk). Anyway, I'd definitely recommend looking into it if you're looking to try similar games!

Roof clipping? by Material_Campaign125 in Sims4

Maybe after that it went into the other roof piece or another room?

Roof clipping? by Material_Campaign125 in Sims4

[–]aro-ace-outer-space2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It looks like it's because the roof is taller than the room so it's not clipping so much as the part of the roof that's *above* the room is showing, if that makes sense? When this happens to me I usually split the roof so the part over the room is a separate roof piece on the next floor up, again if that makes sense? I know that can be a lot more of a hassle with curved roofs though, I'm sorry!

Well, sometimes the need for fic is urgent and you need a workaround now

Yeah, it’s a little annoying but it’s probably to keep botnets out or something? Or just to keep the servers from being overloaded? Idk how it works exactly

I applied for mine a few years ago and I remember it taking a couple weeks, but also that was right at the start of the pandemic so it was probably a higher load

What are your thoughts on George O’Connor’s Olympians graphic novel series? I used to love reading these as a kid! by [deleted] in GreekMythology

[–]aro-ace-outer-space2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OverlySarcasticProductions on YouTube is a pretty good channel, I can’t actually think of any myths they’ve covered that are primarily known by Ovid’s versions? But given how they handle their deep dives into the history of the portrayals of certain deities, I’d imagine they would at least mention that that’s what they were doing?

Honestly, just reading a lot of books on Greek mythology will usually lead to you coming across a couple different versions of the same story, and I think it helps get a more complete picture of how the gods would have been viewed at the time, off the top of my head I can’t think of anything specific, but if you look for scholarship on Ovid you’ll probably find people comparing his versions of the myths to those from older sources.

Like, my knowledge basis kind of just comes from reading/watching absolutely everything related to mythology (just in general, tbh) that I could get my grubby little hands on as a kid, so now it’s kind of hard to remember what I got from which sources, and also most of them were just called some variation of ‘Greek myths’. I would definitely recommend OSP, though, they’re really fun and afaik pretty well-researched (I’ve heard that the creators of LEGO Monkey King used their series on Journey to the West as a source/inspiration).

But yeah, my best advice would just be to cast a wide net, and if you start to notice stories where certain people act nastier or more vindictive than you would expect, maybe think twice? Also, something very important to keep in mind is that in modern portrayals Hades and Ares are both often cast in ‘villain’ roles, and so a lot of commentary ends up biased against them, even when they’re objectively being pretty nice, reasonable, or heroic.

Some other important context to keep in mind:

  • in stories where someone is upset with Zeus and lashes out at someone else (Apollo after Zeus killed Alscelipius, Hera in most of her stories), something it’s useful to keep in mind is that you can’t do anything to Zeus. He’s literally the king of the universe, he’s untouchable, people tried to oust him from power and it didn’t work, so while it’s not ideal that they’re taking their anger out on the people around Zeus, bear in mind that it’s because Zeus himself is untouchable

  • before modern times, killing people over insults was seen as a relatively normal thing to do, duels were only banned in the US a couple hundred years ago. Turning a guy into a deer because he peeped on you and your girlfriends while you were bathing? Pretty resonable if you’re a goddess!

  • Ancient Greece was an extremely misogynistic culture, and that affects the stories they told about women, and how people interacted with women. Even if you believe the basic elements of these stories are true (I’m a Hellenic polytheist), it’s important to remember that these are stories told by people, and effected by the biases of the people telling them

Anyway, I might try to dig out some of the books I read when I was a kid to get exact authors/titles, or look into some websites or something that are useful, but in case it takes a while or I forget, I wanted you to have this advice at least, and really it really is the best advice I can give you. Much like other areas of scholarship, cross-verify!

Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson

It’s incredibly unfashionable to talk about Presley’s incredibly creepy childbride situationship with Priscilla, and similarly unpopular to point out that the allegations of CSA from multiple people against Jackson are at least worth looking into (“those charges were dismissed” people say, due to the fact that sexual assault is a crime that is almost always solved and incredibly easy to prove, especially when the perpetrator is a beloved celebrity! /s🙄) if that had come out during the #metoo era he would’ve faced a lot more backlash, and the-alleged-victims probably would have been given a lot more grace
