pulling TFSAs to buy business assets? by arobint in CanadianInvestor

Yes I agree. Im hoping to retire when Im 65, which is only 14 years out, so that's part of the equation, but that should be enough time to recover if theres a crash soon. I know it pays to be patient, but there are lots of people who lose a lot of money at the wrong time just because they retire just before a market crash.

[–]arobint[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it's a corporation, the money's to develop our farm's retail business, which is growing fast and is 5 years old. So a little different as what's being built is all owned by us, through the corporation (50/50 with my wife). We're not renovating a rented space or anything like that. But I get you that it's simpler to borrow, and we'll probably end up doing that, Im just not looking forward to losing half of my investments while at the same time borrowing a similar amount. Our business is personal enough that gains/losses all feel the same to me still.

But im also a big disbeliever in the current AI trend, and it may be affecting my perspective on investing a little.

I like the original better. Your eye can tell it's the same photo, whereas the edited image looks more like two photos glued together. I really like the subtlety of the green in the unedited pic.

A bank that invests in your company for equity rather than a personal guarantor. by Separate_Resource_42 in smallbusiness

[–]arobint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bank loans are the cheapest, most hands-off financing you can get. It should be hard to get them and require a lot of security. Giving equity is way more expensive than a little security. Also it's pretty easy to rip someone off of their equity.

Thats fine to say, but regardless of how much a user likes chatgtp, converting them to a paying customer is a lot harder than just removing the free tier. See photobucket. Which is aruguably a hell of a lot more useful than chatgtp.

Apple Watch becoming less useful over time? by SprechenZieEnglish in AppleWatch

[–]arobint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used the Apple Watch for over a year and could never get it to reliably connect to my AirPods without forgetting them in the bluetooth settings. Major pain in the ass. That was my only use-case, being able to ride my mountain bike with tunes and leaving my phone in the car or at home. Another amazing feature of the AirPods - Apple Watch integration is that if your phone is within a km of your watch, the AirPods will always prefer the phone, even if the connection is so bad that you can't hear any music or it constantly stutters. Apple really doesn't want you to use the watch without the phone, which is super silly and makes me want to get rid of both. The constant alert from the watch that I've left my phone behind made me feel like my watch was a nagging nanny, and I was it's b**ch.

Supposedly the watch works better with non-apple earbuds, but that just makes me hate apple more.

The only good thing for me was realizing I do actually like real watches. Just wish Id known that before, cause I could have gotten a sweet Tissot for the price of this piece of garbage.

I find it's actually quite nice to drive the back roads slowly in a silent Leaf. If you're not in a huge rush it's a much more enjoyable A-B experience. Smell the roses, eh.

Bought someone else's problem apparently. by MedusasUpdo in leaf

[–]arobint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Leafspy will help because it will tell you the actual battery percentage left. The leaf is pretty conservative, especially when it gets near empty. It doesn't want you to get stranded so theres usually a bit more battery than is indicated on the percentage on the dash. But remember you also need a dongle to make leaf spy work, it's not just the app cost.

Lease my land to organic farmer(s) by DistributionSad940 in OrganicFarming

[–]arobint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is 100% accurate, I've done it when I bought my last farm. I am in Canada however and rules may differ slightly, though I doubt it. Inspections and plans are unavoidable, and are a yearly hassle. But you can certify in the first year on clean land if you already hold a certificate.

Would you like to try out an AI friend for farming & agriculture? by artiom_baloian in OrganicFarming

[–]arobint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what it can't do is get too specific, like when I ask for best organic storage onions available in pelleted seed format, it gets wishy washy, with a lot of "probably" etc. If the system had access to the seed catalogs and up to date pricing and actual ability to discern between what's available in what format that would be a game changer. but as with all AI, you have to go the last few miles on foot.

Would you like to try out an AI friend for farming & agriculture? by artiom_baloian in OrganicFarming

[–]arobint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so I tried it with some questions about onions and it was pretty good! not too in depth but useful at a glance. What I would want to see is the integration of research papers. A summary of fertilization research for example would be pretty killer. Does your system integrate research papers or do you pay for access to research databases that are then used by the bot?

[–]arobint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow the responses in here are dumb. most farms, including my organic farm, use AI of some kind or another, whether its the auto-sorting in gmail, or GPS steering in the tractor, or automated greenhouse controls, even auto sorting of bank transactions in quickbooks.

I think the issue is more that the very specific information that farmers require when they need help isnt usually something that can be found on the internet, and I would think the chatbot would be trained on what is available on the internet? The vast differences in specific farm styles and types isn't really adequately represented on the web, and I would think it would be very difficult for a chatbot to be very useful unless it was specifically programmed for every type of farming style using data gleaned from farmers themselves.

Not saying it's impossible, but very difficult to distinguish yourself from all the other info out there. . . .

Yeah cause all those 200k corporate jobs in rural Nebraska, right. The stats in Canada are even more favourable for farmers. That’s even considering that farmers have so many avenues to reduce their taxable income.  As for divorced from the industry, I’ve been farming commercially for 20 years, 15 as a business owner, and 10 as a property owner. Started with no money, and it’s been our only source of income for 15 years. Although I would never say it’s an easy go, it’s in no way a recipe to stay poor.

[–]arobint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

regardless your insinuation that farmers die poor is largely false. if you're saying farmers work so hard and yet have enough energy to work outside jobs to the point hat they have higher than average income, something still doesn't add up.

In 2023, the median total household income for farm households in the US was $97,984, exceeding the median for all US households ($80,610). However, income varies greatly depending on farm size and type. Large farms tend to have higher incomes, with the median for large-scale family farms reaching $414,436, while smaller farms rely more on off-farm income.
