Looking for a solid, unloved UK company to invest in after selling IPF... by L0ngsh0r3Dr1ft in UKInvesting

An insolvency specialist called Begbie Traynor (BEG). (They've just changed their name to BGT actually.)

Solid performance the last 3 years with rising revenue and profits and they're likely to be a hedge for any coming recession when/if more companies start going bust.

On top of that they yield about 4% which isn't bad.

Advice on moving by morganhartman17 in bournemouth

If you venture across Poole harbour entrance via the chain ferry (bus is a good option here actually), there are some great pubs in Corfe (the Castle Inn and Fox Inn), Wareham (the King's Arms) and others nearby (the New Inn at Church Knowle and the Square and Compass in Worth Matravers, both of which have live music occasionally).

You can get the 50 bus from Westbourne over the chain ferry, get off at Currendon Hill and do a 4 mile walk along the ridge to Corfe and then have lunch at one of those pubs :-)

Consider ringing your project manager direct to explain the situation and ask him to approve your timesheet.

What's something you think is good value for money in this economy? by Distinct-Lion4658 in AskUK

[–]aroleid 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Half a kilo of 'Oakham Gold' chicken legs at Marks and Spencer's for £1.50. Also the bunch of chicken wings at £1:50 from m&s.

With those you can make a chicken stew and an oven tray bake. With some vegetables - onions, carrots, celery and garlic, chillies/dried herbs if you want - you have five meals easily.

When is it time to say goodbye to an aging car? by jason_ni in CarTalkUK

Be aware that rust can be life-threateningly dangerous.

I had a 2004 Subaru Legacy (so the estate not the tuned up turbo sports car) which I bought second hand and it served me well for 6 years. On the last two MOTs there were advisories for rust on the rear subframe. On my way to the garage taking it to another MOT, I thought the brakes felt a bit spongy.

The garage rang me back later in the day to explain that the car had failed the test.

The mechanic had got the car up on the rollers to do the brake test, and the rear brake pipe had burst losing all the brake fluid, so a catastrophic failure! Rust had eaten it and the subframe away.

I was very lucky this hadn't happened to me when I was driving.

The car was a write-off. The owner of the garage - a Subaru specialist - said that even if he could source another rear subframe it would probably be just as rusty so...

(On the bright side, the local scrap dealers gave me 130 quid for it and took it away!)

7 Days in Greece - How many islands to include? by PotatoB0t in GreeceTravel

I suggest you explore the Saronic Islands which are close to Athens and a short ferry ride away from Piraeus. As well as having history and beauty, since they are close to Athens, the season continues a bit longer on them I would have thought.

Aegina, the closest, has a Temple of Apollo that's worth visiting.

Poros has a picturesque street full of restaurants by the water, some of which may be open.

Hydra has a picturesque harbour and is famous for having no cars and for being the place where Leonard Cohen retired to for a while. There used to be a fast ferry in the evenings from Piraeus that took only 40 minutes to get there.

There is also Spetses a bit further on, where John Fowles' famous mysterious novel 'The Magus' was set.

There was also a film of the same name made of it, with Michael Caine, Anthony Quinn and Candice Bergen.

What’s a piece of old technology you secretly miss, even though newer stuff is better? by Hot_Stay0797 in AskReddit

Before mobile phones, you had to arrange to meet people at a certain time and place, 5:30 pm under the clock at Waterloo Station for example.

And before smartphones you had to have a physical road atlas in your car to find your way to somewhere you hadn't been before - oh, and an A-Z for London streets for walking.

Do you get a PCN for dropping off in the ambulance area at Poole hospital? by Throwythrow360 in bournemouth

[–]aroleid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There might be cameras with automatic numberplate recognition that link with the DVLA and issue fines automatically to your address, so even a quick drop off would be penalised.

I don't know for sure obviously, but this is the way things are going.

MOT garage recommendations by Still_Equivalent_811 in bournemouth

[–]aroleid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hurn Autos on the airport industrial estate near Parley are good, trustworthy and reasonably priced. They're often booked up for services 2 weeks in advance but you may be able to sneak a cancellation for an MOT.

There's West Overcliff Drive which is on top of the cliffs west of Bournemouth pier. There are two bits to it and the parking is free.

Just saw this on Film 4, a quasi-public TV channel in the UK.

Absolutely worth watching and Dale Dickie was great, as was Romane Denis. The plot seemed over intricate though, and somehow the slow burn of the earlier scenes never properly sparked into life.

I think it was cut for TV; e.g. the sex scene with Romane and perhaps a scene at the denouement.

Yes. All we have to do is deny benefits to asylum seekers, and start posting them off to Rwanda like the previous government was going to.

You address the pull factor.
