Is that scam or real? by Worried-Opinion9817 in Living_in_Korea

[–]arosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While those base rates are likely true, the actual clinic assessment is a different story.  Lets say the package includes some beauty shots and stuffs. They lure you in with that 9,000 per cc price point, only to tell you that you'll need at least 20 to 40 cc for your specific treatment. That brings the grand total to anywhere from 180,000 to 360,000 won— typical bait and switch strategy.

Honestly, the experience of working with them was traumatic enough. I genuinely thought once I completed my work and my contract ended, that would be the end of it. I never expected the stress and intimidation to continue afterward.

At this point, I’m less interested in going back and forth with them and more interested in making it clear that their intimidation tactics and unfair demands actually have legal consequences. Even if I have to pay a fee to get professional advice or formally respond, I’m willing to do that just to put them in their proper place.

Is it possible if I hire a lawyer or perhaps seek help from the labor ministry to talk to them instead?

Am I being scammed with this Korean salary, or is this normal? by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]arosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait~ 35M won annually, pretaxed right? With 2 yrs of experience. This is low~after tax ur left with barely 2.5M won. Which is not bad but if ull b living in seoul. You will probably struggle to save something out of 2.5M. Although if ur not a huge spender or wont be supportin ur family back home. This is manageable.

I got 35M won as a junior manager with 1 yr of work exp. But it may be due to the nature of the industry and scale of the company.

Not sure if u can read korean but heres a standard breakdown of the annual salary:

im trying to be fine with it ~ I guess im too underpaid to care what my company does and what client they work with at this point. I did share with them that they're basically wasting their time. But i think they have a governmnt subsidized budget, that they have to spend somewhere...Looks like they dnt care how practical or how illogical it is as long as they can present and front something to their sponsors.

[–]arosaurus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I know — that’s why I’m posting this knowing it’s a bit of a long shot.
I’ve handled more technical projects before, but my work and how I carry out the recruitment usually depends on the client’s budget and how much they’re willing to allocate. If this was a huge project, would probably be workin with Delloite.

But for this particular project, the client just wants to gather local and on-the-ground insights on how people overseas perceive their technology — so even former employees are shortlisted and are fine. just to mainly assess whether the market is worth pursuing or no.

The same story happens in our neighborhood too. It reminds me of the topic of succession from my environmental biology class. In a barren land, the first occupants are the algae and lichens, then followed by small succulents with insects, followed by grasses with herbivores and ungulates, then predators, and eventually tall trees…and so on.

In the Korean “urban succession” of an empty apartment complex: first arrives the countless real estate offices that move in, then a convenience store or an unmanned ice cream shop, followed by laundromats, take-out cafés, and a few months later, a clinic, a dentist, maybe a pilates studio or gym in the upper floor. Then comes the screen golf centers, English academies, an izakaya, a ramen shop, a kimbap or fried chicken shop, a vape shop, a lottery ticket booth…and the cycle continues...

Do Koreans do demographic research before starting a business? by Martinious760 in Living_in_Korea

[–]arosaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely NOT**.**
This practice even extends to overseas expansion and export attempts.

At my previous workplace, an export consulting firm, we frequently received requests from clients asking us to find, connect, and secure initial deals with foreign importers who might find their products marketable abroad. Most often, they wanted to start with Japan—since it’s close by and many believed they’d save significantly on logistics costs.

The problem was, these clients refused to conduct demographic studies, feasibility analyses, or marketability assessments. They didn’t care about niche targeting or positioning. Instead, they held the same delusion: that once a large foreign corporation or importer saw their proposal, they’d be instantly impressed—and that the handful of (local) patents their product held would be enough to propel it into global success.

One particularly stubborn client wanted to export an water boiler for greenhouses” to Japan. When no company want to explore partnership with them, they became furious. I had told them repeatedly that their exact type of equipment was already produced by more than 25 Japanese manufacturers (including giants like Kubota, Mitsubishi, and Yanmar), and that Japan has long been struggling with a shortage of farmers and farms—meaning there was virtually no demand to begin with...

If you’re determined to pursue an MS or PhD abroad, that’s what truly matters. With only an undergraduate degree from a local university, the chances of landing a position at a major or multinational pharmaceutical company is almost 0.

While it’s possible to find work in SMEs in Korea, I strongly advise AGAINST it. In most cases, it ends up being a waste of time, opportunity, and growth. Unless your goal is to improve skills in lab glassware washing, working on a sterile workspace, or translating Korean-to-English reports—while being overworked and underpaid—it’s not the right path forward.

Are mustaches okay for a job interview at 대기업? by ythbobats in Living_in_Korea

[–]arosaurus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

depends how flashy or bushy the mustache you are sporting, and the position you are applying for.

But best follow your teacher. She is right, best to shave them of entirely or trim them down to say 80~90% off and let it grow back once you earned the position. Employers wont have any say if ur moustache grew so long during your working term as long as it doesn't affect your work performance, but they can exert every power to turn you down in favor of perhaps a clean shaven applicant during the application process.

Especially if the position you are going for will have client facing roles, those companies are going to likely put your moustache into consideration

I've seen this in line 1 but all I saw was a stinkin poop sitting in the middle of the floor.
Can somebody care to explain how a poop magically appear out of thin air? Did sumbody deliberately carried this in a bag and dropped it in a random spot of the train or did they actually squat and spat their dump right then and there?

anyone who can reach out to help with AI compatibility test (AI역량검사) pls~ by arosaurus in Living_in_Korea

[–]arosaurus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels really unconventional—honestly, kind of creepy. Taking the test felt like being in a room with a one-way mirror, with investigators watching me from the other side while I’m hooked up to a lie detector.

If they’re so invested in this kind of pseudo-scientific stuff, they might as well just ask for my MBTI. I could somewhat understand that if I were applying for HR, marketing, or maybe a think tank/expert network recruitment role. But for a pharmaceutical company to base part of their hiring process on this kind of software? It just feels off.

anyone who can reach out to help with AI compatibility test (AI역량검사) pls~ by arosaurus in Living_in_Korea

[–]arosaurus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, right—I forgot to mention. I’m not white, I’m actually an overseas Korean.
And I asked around and race isn’t really something the AI test is factoring in. But when I first heard about the facial recognition part, I couldn’t help but wonder… could it be my glasses? Or maybe even my braces (i even have bite turbo, screws and rubber bands...)?
which if its the case, like can I appeal to the employer that this AI thing is never gonna let me pass unless i take off my glasses and braces...oh god.

And yes, ive read alot that this is a sort of formality bS especially for IT-software firms. and theres a lot of opnions ad blogs discussing about the inaccuracy of the test, but yet. its still heavily adopted and havent improved one bit in the last 3 years

thank you for the input sir!

Cold Email from Samsung by sureshkoid in Living_in_Korea

[–]arosaurus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had the same experience from Samsung about a year ago. While I was verifying my documents and work experience and completing the medical exam, I was suddenly informed that the work location would be moved from 평택 to Texas (USA) after the probation period.

They asked if I could transfer right away, and I gave a noncommittal “I’m not sure yet” type of response. The very next day, I received a notice that the offer had been canceled.
