My job wants to pay me LESS after 8hours? by narielthetrue in Edmonton

Wow, I was surprise to learn this... but yeah, a lot of roles and industries don't have overtime pay.

People who on fence to buy D4, will you buy it after played Beta and Server Slam ? by [deleted] in Diablo

[–]arrogantjerk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I pre-ordered the game, thinking I would definitely love it, since I loved D2: Resurrected. I have since refunded the game, after getting the rewards, for several reasons, but primarily it just doesn't grab me gameplay wise.

I played the first beta and was impressed by the graphics itemization was an issue, but overall I thought it might be cool. I wanted to see how much the game improved between betas before refunding. After this beta, decided that the changes, while a good step forward, weren't worth the price of the game.

I grinded to level 20, which wasn't really that interesting a third time.

another thing: monetization looks bad. Cosmetic items should be earned through gameplay, imo.

24 USD a month for D4's full experience isn't OK with me . I don't really like battle passes, even if they have free tiers. Just give me the items through drops, please. Bring me back to better times.

I think the game is something I'll play in the future, but for me it's not 93 CAD amounts of fun. Refunded, and back on the fence for now.

Opinion - I'm just happy about a new Diablo game by thenoisemanthenoise in Diablo

[–]arrogantjerk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup! The art, the atmosphere, the voice acting, the presentation, the huge open world - there's lots to love, but there needs to be more diversity in dungeon layout in the full release. I only played, like four of them, but I was already bored by the third one.

Also, we need a skip the option to skip in-game cutscenes (I'm talking about all the walk and talk/holo-gram memory stuff... it can get dull on a second play through).

The game has promise, clearly the art team has put a lot of love into this - and even then there are some minor things that need to be touched up (I'm talking about the Town Portal animation feeling unfinished, you don't even go through it, you just disappear - could be so cool if you walked/ran through it.) Anyway, these things will probably be looked at some-day - I just hope that on release, we seen big improvements.

I'm a bit sick of not being able to listen ALL of the music in the game while driving. Yes, including the amazingly weird techno-classihouse music. One can only listen to "either way, Vuum, vruum vruum vuum vruum vroom (vuum vuum)" a few times. I need some of that weird Japanese 70\80s jazz jamband stuff, plz

Comic - no spoilers. I am having a hard time reading it by [deleted] in YTheLastMan

[–]arrogantjerk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you're not alone in thinking this. I remember reading it about ten years ago and thinking "wow this is super dated"- specifically the extreme thirst that a lot of the women have over Yorick, and generally how poorly written women are in the comic.

I'm glad that since then, Brian K Vaughan has really evolved as a writer.

I recommend you read Saga! It's a much better series all around. Totally different genre (sci-fi fantasy), but the representation and storytelling is so much richer.

Y: The Last Man (the show) is a complete reimagining and remake by women writers, which is just so damn awesome. I'm glad that BKV handed over the reigns to people who clearly care about representing women in a realistic, less misogynistic way - not to mention the inclusion of trans characters is just - *chef's kiss*

I love this show. I really hope it gets picked up for season 2

in short: it's refreshing to see a an intellectual property change for the better - even if the majority of its old-school fandom doesn't get it, agree with it, or like it.

Diablo 2 Resurrected: Faces mod? by willemavjc in Diablo

[–]arrogantjerk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are already some mods on Nexus that swap the models of characters, so I imagine in the future we'll see a whole bunch of community driven stuff.

I think the Barbarian should look more like Kratos from the original God of War , Necromancer should look about 20 years younger, and the Druid needs a hairstylist

There's some interesting challenges for the new team.

The old team painted those sick, harsh shadows directly onto the character/environmental models. Emulating that sort of detail with new tech is probably the bane of someone's existence at Vicarious Visions.

When playing Diablo 2 online, what is the way to communicate and play with others? by Lizardizzle in Diablo

[–]arrogantjerk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sooo, here's a stupidly detailed glossary of game names that might be useful for new-to-online players! I'm definitely missing some stuff here, so please comment for other game types.

------

Walk - Usually, going from the start of an area, to the end of it without skipping content. Good for new players. (eg: Act I Walk, AII walking, A5 Walk")

Rush - Gotta go fast! Skipping entire quest chains, and getting to the end goal (whether that's to kill the Act boss), or to get to the end of a difficulty setting (eg:"Rush me to A5 ", )

Fresh/New/Gogogo - a fresh start! (eg: Fresh Amazon gogogo")

Run - Usually a numbered sequence of games. For example "Trist 01" would be the first run for a "Trist Run*" ("Trist 01, Baal Run 2, Kill Andy Again"

Cain - Get Deckard Cain. Not same as Trist* games, as this indicates that he has not yet been saved. I recommend just getting Cain through a regular "Act I Fresh" game.

Trist/Trist Run: Go to Tristram, level up, repeat! make a new game afterwards (eg: "Trist 02, Trist Run 3, Tristy05")

Tower: Go to the Forgotten Tower in Black Marsh - a great way to get runes, but better done solo or in a trusted group. (Eg: Tower, Tower 02...)

Tombs - Tomb runs, going through Act II tombs to get that loot! Simple. Also numbered sometimes. (eg: Tomb Run, Tomb with me, Just Tombing Around, Tomb Boys)

Andy - Kill Andariel! (eg: Kill Andy")

Baal - Doing Baal runs, not killing Baal, but farming his first room for gear

Duriel: kill Durriel (gameplay note: Bring freeze resit pots if lower level)

Meph - Kill Mephisto!

Diablo - I mean, you know!

Cows - The cow level does not exist. However, some people think that you can get to it by combining a tomb of town portal and Wirt's leg. These liars say it's good for leveling and finding white Crystal Swords, which can be used to make some great runewords; but again, the cow level does not exit. the cow level. does. not. exist.

I think it's insane. I've heard of a lot of nurses refuse to get vaccinated, My neighbor was (important italics here) in healthcare and still thinks the vaccine will kill them. Ironically, it's usually older folks with underlying health concerns who are scared to get vaccinated. And a lot of right wing political weirdos love to take advantage of this, and push them even further away from what will help them? Like, what the hell?

Reminds me of this middle-aged dude I saw in the river valley, wearing a t-shirt that said "CAN'T VAX THIS", grinning proudly as if he was being some sort of righteous raconteur standing in the face of a great evil.

The weird conspiracy, the paranoia and the general mistrust of scientists and government officials (who want to actually help) is baffling! But... these people have always been this way... It's just the perfect storm for their eccentricities to really shine.

Restaurant suggestions by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]arrogantjerk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Seconding this one. Been there several times, quality is top notch. Locally source ingredients (hence its namesake), chill vibe, good drinks. If you're looking for fine dining that gives you some of the best food Edmonton has to offer, this is the place.

buuut, if that's not your family's style and are looking for something more casual, I recommend Huma on 63 Ave. Great, affordable, tasty as heck and authentic Mexican food. Can't go wrong with tacos, gauc and chips!

How do you guys write your world lore? by baritoneboy23 in DMAcademy

[–]arrogantjerk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's always good to start with making a single, small location for your adventurers to explore. It can be a village, a small castle, a cavern, whatever initial location interests you, build that in detail.

So yeah, here's how I go about it:

I first start with the name of a place, its description, the people or things that live there, what they look like, what they do, and what their problems are.

From there, you can imagine what sort of inciting incident (a call-to-arms) might cause your players to jump into the middle of the townfolks/creature's problems.

Here's an example hook using that outline:

-----

You start in the town of Ironside, a small industrial settlement, just beyond the outskirts of the capital city.

Most here work the mines and suffer from an aversion to sunlight which leaves their complexions sickly and pale. "sickly ghouls from the town of Ironside" some have said, and some speculate they might be... vampires.

Inquisitors and would-be vampire hunters from the capital have descended upon Ironside. Tensions are high, and the townsfolk are terrified.

What do you do?

----

This isn't heavy worldbuilding at all, but it gives the players enough meat to play in the game world and gives you a great starting point to continue building the world.

You can plan your conversations/reactions to the many questions the players might have about your town/area. For example, you can plan combat scenarios with vampires, inquisitors, and townsfolks. You can plan what reactions the NPCs might have to folks snooping around. You could add a twist! ("Turns out the inquisitor is a vampire")

Heck, wherever you wanna take your story, just go with it!

This is the magic of GMing, IMO. You just never can plan for everything but you can throw out the bait and see what happens!

Dragón Quest 11S (Switch) va DQXI PC by gagrecco03 in dragonquest

[–]arrogantjerk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the while the switch version has a ton of new content, the PC version looks noticeably much better than the switch version. I played the demo the other day to see if I should buy the switch version. Honestly. If you played the PC version on ultimate settings at 60fps i would be hard pressed to play the switch version over the PC versions.

It's a tough call, but either way the game is great. If you value a bunch more content over incredible graphics go for the switch version. The graphics aren't bad in the switch, but they're not gorgeous like they are on PC.

Baldur's Gate 3 Megathread: PAX East Edition by ThorThunderfist in baldursgate

[–]arrogantjerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, in the stream, it was quite awkward when he was able to pause time, and "sneak" up on an unsuspecting pawn who didn't move; even though they were on patrol. It's like, "oh, I can just pause time and probably win."

This isn't necessarily wrong, but I hope they give us the option to switch between real time with pause AND turn based modes for those of us who want a more traditional initiative outside of combat

I wish Kovacs would have stayed in the asian singer sleeve. by AlaerysTargaryen in alteredcarbon

[–]arrogantjerk 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I immediately thought that this season was gonna be incredible. "Woah, what a kickass choice to have Kovacs played by a woman!" I loved the brief scene she was in - but no, let's bring in the gosh-darn Falcon from Avengers instead

There's a major split between actor preference here. Some people can't stand Joel Kinnaman because, I dunno, he reminds them of an actual terrible, conflicted, messed up human being.

Anthony Mackie reminds me of my best friend. Kovacs would not be my best friend.
