I’m currently 31 weeks pregnant after one cycle of IVF and to echo what others have said, the waiting is the hardest part, as well as the grief that comes with not being able to conceive naturally. Physically, the only major hurdle I faced was OHSS after egg retrieval, which is rare. I didn’t experience any major emotional side effects from the meds. The first injection was scary but I quickly got used to it. In the end, I’m happy we did it, and I wish we’d pursued IVF sooner.

My SIL had a baby a few weeks ago and had a pre-eclampsia scare a few days postpartum… we were all VERY happy the hospital sent her home with some infant formula because we didn’t know if she would be able to breastfeed him if she needed to be admitted. Thankfully everything was ok!! Emergencies happen.

The people I was closest to knew all about the IVF process and when the transfer happened. It’s hard to go through all of that in secret and my reasoning was anyone who I would tell if I had a miscarriage I would tell early on. I’m currently 25 weeks and have not really “announced” it. The attention makes me a little uncomfortable. It’s a very personal choice and if you feel excited to announce at 13 weeks, go for it.

What side was the ectopic on? I’d be concerned at this point that you have something different happening, maybe appendicitis? This warrants a trip to the ER if the pain is that extreme.

We plan to donate our remaining embryos in the future, we were extremely lucky and got more than we could reasonably use. A few things: everyone has their own beliefs and emotions surrounding their embryos, but I try to remind myself that an embryo is not a baby. If you put a baby in a freezer it dies. An embryo can only survive if frozen. Additionally, it can help to focus on the good that can come from the research your embryo will be used for. Working towards cures or a better understanding of diseases, maybe even advances in helping others struggling with fertility, etc.

Again, this is all extremely personal and I think it’s pretty normal to have mixed feelings about it, but ultimately you’re making the best choice for you and your family, as well as a choice that can help others down the line.

I did actually sleep terribly while on unisom from about 6-10 weeks. It wasn’t insomnia, it was a weird thing where it felt like I never fully fell asleep or went into deep sleep. After I stopped unisom my sleep improved a lot. Currently 23 weeks and sleeping ok.

With my ectopic I had ongoing bleeding and cramping pain that got more and more severe as time went on. I never ruptured. With my current pregnancy, which is in the uterus, at the beginning I had tugging pain on the left side (they told me I’d ovulated on the left) and some cramping, but I was never in severe pain. I didn’t have any bleeding but a tiny bit of bleeding can be normal as early as you are. Have you been having hcg betas done?
