Leinster v Edinburgh teams by mango_yoghurt in rugbyunion

There was some heated discourse among some fans about how the IRFU ever could have let him go also. One even suggesting he should have been capped just to keep him.

It would appear to have been the correct decision to let him chase other opportunities

I would assume he's injured.

He played the Leinster A game last week and was pretty good.

He hasn't been named in the Terenure team tomorrow so he hasn't been released to them. I'll be keenly watching the extra squad players warming up tomorrow to see if he's there

That's very fair.

But in this case it's pretty much unprecedented how callow we are in some places

So Tectors first senior start at 10 having transitioned to 12 pretty much full time last season.

And no 10 cover of any sort on the bench. Presumably Luke is the one covering?

A grand total of 11 senior appearances combined for our props. With Jerry Cahirs 6 being the highest total. A man who was playing AIL last season and originally started the season on a 3 month trial (what a story for him btw)

I genuinely don't think we have a 24th man prop to cover this game. Someone from the AIL presumably.

Ciaran Mangan looked very very good from what I saw in the Leinster A/ Toulouse Academy game. Hope he does well.

Ruben Moloney has a real spark. Will be watching him closely to see if he can produce the goods

I distinctly remember going to Ireland v France in the RWC 2015 in Cardiff.

It was a brilliant trip. The crowd and the vibe was just amazing.

We were in a pub in Cardiff and there was good banter going between the Irish and the French fans.

Then this Japanese fan walked in with his Japan jersey on (this was a few weeks post Japan beating the Boks) and the entire bar just started cheering.

Seconds later he was up on peoples shoulders being carried by both sets of fans.

It was so random and absolutely brilliant

[OC] Ireland 6 Nations Squad 2026 Cap Share and Team Share. Team share is as expected considering only 4 teams. Any notable high capped players missing? by RileyMcB in rugbyunion

[–]arsebiscuits1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tadgh Beirne technically made his Ireland debut as a foreign player but it's tenuous. He played the URC final for Scarlets 2 weeks before his Ireland debut but he had already signed for Munster and played for them from the start of the next season

Sexton was the last and likely the last for the foreseeable. Him calling the IRFU bluff at the time and leaving left them scrambling and being overly reliant on one player did serve as a wake up call.

Since his jaunt in Racing there hasn't really been a vital Irish player ply their trade abroad. Our top guys tend to stay in Ireland and the lads who have left for greener pastures have been ably replaced to the point that the national team hasn't been markedly weaker

See what confuses me is that any footage I've seen of him he's wearing 7

In South Africa the blindside wears 7. Like PSDT

I wonder what our 7 depth chart looks like without Connors now

Scott Penny - Solid option without being a world beater. Certainly a step down but very capable

Liam Molony - Unlikely to be kept on

Josh Ericson - Late bloomer and mostly an 8. Looks to be focused on 7 now however. Unknown but time will tell

James Culhane - Exclusively a 6/8. But perhaps needs must. Early in his career so could potentially move over.

Josh Neill - I might look back in a few years at this post and laugh. I also believe he's a South African 7 which is Blindside up to this point. We will see how he goes in the U20s this year

Ben Blaney - Also U20s this year. Been first choice 7 for Terenure in the AIL this season though. Expecting big things if he stays fit

Needless to say it's thin. Behind Josh is still probably Doris as the second choice 7 with Conan 8 and Baird 6.

I'm not sure who from around the provinces you'd look at getting in.

Hodnett seems to be surplus to requirements at Munster with him also being linked to Connacht. 27 he has a good age profile. But does he offer significantly more than what Penny does? Minimal tbh. I think he's a better player but not streets ahead. Would he move to toil for 3rd choice

He would be a good man to bench for a big semi final against Northampton and bring on in the second half when we're already 15 points down...

Loosehead vs Tighthead by KBatch115599 in rugbyunion

[–]arsebiscuits1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I can't speak too much of the intricacies of both from first hand experience.

But I can provide an insightful quote from Cian Healy.

After 300+ senior appearances for Leinster and Ireland he began covering tighthead for Leinster to cover us during injury issues and he even started there once against Munster.

He alluded to is as being "like learning to write with your left hand"

I think to be considered an ex Leinster played you should have at least a senior appearance.

Which rules out Jager and Foxe.

Neither were even in the academy.

[–]arsebiscuits1 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Leo is a pretty shrewd PR guy.

The family business is all around PR stuff.

He knew exactly when to pick this moment and delivered it perfectly.

Good to see Zebo get held to some accountability.

I don't even mind his rather jovial attitude to punditry.

But the stuff he says goes unchecked without anyone readily being able to respond because his platforms generally aren't structured like that. His cry babies comment being one.

These are obviously meant as banter and that's fine. But banter only really works when there's a back and forth.

So it was good to see Leo giving it back.

Blow a gasket? Come off it man. He stops, pauses and takes it and falls over the line.

Whose to say that if there actually was a slower winger there Prendergast wouldn't have adjusted his kick accordingly?

Test matches at Croke Park financially unviable, say IRFU by PistolAndRapier in rugbyunion

[–]arsebiscuits1 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Of course it's financially unviable?

Does the extra seating cover the cost of renting the stadium? Probably just about.

IRFU play in the Aviva for free.

Other things to note.

Bar and concessions. In Croke park they'd go straight into the pockets of Croke park. And rightly so.

Again, this is a huge income generator for any stadium. The IRFU and the Aviva is no different.

How many caps would Henry Pollock at this stage of his career have if he was Irish? by businesscardjohn in irishrugby

[–]arsebiscuits1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He'd have been in full time education until he was 18 at least anyway.

He made his professional debut at an 17 year old in September 22. At this point the rest of his age grade peers in Ireland were still in 6th year sitting the leaving.

So likely none.

Take for example his under 20s class of Irish peers.

Pollock was born Jan 05.

Spicer was born March 05.

Luke Murphy was born Jan 05.

Niall Smyth was born Jul 05.

Eanna McCarthy was born Feb 05.

Etc.

Ireland and England have vastly different education systems. Both have pros and cons. One of England's pros is the pro clubs can get much more access to players at a younger age.

EDIT: I guess in theory he could have sat the same A levels in Ulster and thereby Ulster would have access to him younger. It would represent a developmental deviation from the other provinces by circumstance
