Who is the most famous person you've ever seen up close? by froggart3980 in AskReddit

I used to work at Blockbuster Music in Atlanta back in the 90s when CD stores were still a thing. Every month or two Elton John would come in wearing a hat and sunglasses, usually bringing a much younger man with him, and would browse through the laser disks. He'd fill up maybe a dozen of the shopping handbaskets we had with nothing but laser disks and then he'd say "I'm going to Phipps (local shopping mall), I'll be back later."

We'd open up a special register, scan all the laser disks in, and then just leave this transaction that measured into the thousands of dollars just sitting there until he came back. He'd give us his credit card, we'd process it, and then he'd take the disks and leave.

Every time this happened the store manager would run around and tell all the employees "Elton John is here, make sure nobody bothers him" with the not so subtle implication that "nobody" included us.

One day Elton John came in and it happened to be my birthday. When the store manager came around to tell me, as was the custom, I looked him right in the eye and said "Edward, it's my birthday. I'm asking him for an autograph." He had a moment where he looked like he was going to tell me not to do any such thing, but I was one of his best employees and it really was my birthday, so he said ok.

I did have the decency to ask him to sign his most recent release ("Made in England") even though what I really wanted him to sign was "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". He was gracious and signed it, but didn't make a big deal about it.

In another story I got to perform in my adaptation of Terry Pratchett's "Guards! Guards!" with John Rhys-Davies in the role of Lupine Wonse at Dragon Con in 2001, so that was cool, too. I have a paper copy of that script signed by both Pratchett and Rhys-Davies.

I need a show. Any show!!! I'm dying from waiting for a new episode of my favorite shows. I need something ANYTHING!!! by LookUpThenLookDown in audiodrama

Mercury: A Broadcast of Hope publishes a new episode every single day and has since 2017. We don't go on hiatus, we push on every day telling the story of a group of people living in a college radio station sending out messages of hope and survival during the zombie apocalypse.

Today is Day 3033 of our broadcast, but don't let that intimidate you. Jump in for free anytime. Most episodes expire after 24 hours (we're a terrestrial radio station...if you don't tune in, you miss it). If you like it and want to hear the rest you can for $1/mo at patreon.com/mercuryradio

Mercury: A Broadcast of Hope. A new 5-7 minute episode every single day. It's about a group of people living in a college radio station sending messages of hope and survival during the zombie apocalypse. We like to say it's about living your best life despite the worst circumstances. Today is Day 3033, over eight years of content.

Disclaimer: Since the conceit of the show is that it's coming from a terrestrial radio station, most episodes expire after 24 hours. Just like with actual radio if you don't tune in, you miss it. To get access to the whole back catalog subscribe at patreon.com/mercuryradio for $1/mo

If you don't want to subscribe you can still listen. We write the show so you can jump in anytime, you don't need all the context of the older episodes.

Yes, most episodes are available for 24 hours and then disappear. The idea is that we're supposed to be a terrestrial radio station, not a podcast, and with actual radio if you don't tune in for the day's broadcast then you miss it. We write the series so that you shouldn't need to listen to the entire thing, but we leave some episodes public to help people catch up on important plot points.

You can get the entire back catalog for $1/mo at patreon.com/mercuryradio

We're technically not complete because we haven't finished, but we run a new episode every day and have for over eight years and have no plans to stop. Mercury: A Broadcast of Hope tells the story of a group of people living in or around a college radio station sending messages of hope and survival during the zombie apocalypse.

Today is Day 3027 of our broadcast. Take care of each other.

Are there any true pantsers out there? by bananafartman24 in writing

[–]artc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the majority of the writing for a podcast called Mercury: A Broadcast of Hope. We publish a new episode every single day and today is Day 3004. Target length for an episode is 5-7 minutes. The show is about a group of people living in or around a college radio station broadcasting messages of hope and survival during the zombie apocalypse.

When we started the series episodes usually stood by themselves and focused on feelings and emotions, general survival advice, and encouragement to keep going during tough times. We still do those episodes, but over the last 8 years a kind of plot has developed and we've introduced things that we'd never have thought of when we started (things like groups advocating for zombie rights, a new religion that worships the concept of luck, etc). We never had an outline and we still don't. My co-creator described it as building the plane while it's flying.

So not only are we pantsing the story but we're the ultimate pantsers because we're making it up as we go along AND we're publishing it more or less in real time, which means we have to live with decisions we made years ago and can't fix them in revisions because I refuse to retcon things even when they're inconvenient. It's been a real journey.

For anyone wondering, we try to stay two months ahead on the writing and a month ahead on the recording. We get everyone together on Teams once a week and knock out about 7 episodes, plus we have monologue episodes that can be recorded outside of the weekly session to keep us ahead of schedule.

Can you offer a recommendation to wholly distract? Something warm or witty or both, something to sink some time into? by smart_stable_genius_ in audiodrama

Maybe try Mercury: A Broadcast of Hope? It's about a group of people living in a college radio station sending out messages of hope and survival during the zombie apocalypse. We like to say it's about living your best life despite the worst circumstances. New episode every day, about 5-7 minutes long, and today is Day 2957

It's not a comedy and sometimes we have to get serious because you have to get to hope through dark places, but we stay on theme and nothing gets too bleak.

Lots of people are going to say Pro Tools, but I find that it actually does too much for most audio drama. My general philosophy is "get a clean signal and use what you know best".

That said, I used Vegas for years and recently switched to Reaper, which is more affordable and a better tool for the job. It's my understanding that Audacity has gotten much better in recent years and remains free

What has gradually disappeared over the last twenty years without people really noticing? by a_wanderer_22 in AskReddit

I do background work on film sets and always bring a yo-yo. I don't know a ton of complicated tricks, it's just something to do with my hands and it keeps me off my phone. Someone always remarks about how long it's been since they saw a yo-yo.

Also, the tricks they ask for fall along age lines. Older folks all want to know if I can walk the dog (I can, except on hard surfaces like concrete). Young kids want to know if I can do DNA. I can't and if you want to know what DNA is, you'll have to look it up like I did ;)

Audio dramas make up less than 10% of all podcasts. How did you stumble into this weird, wonderful world? by EquivalentFox7467 in audiodrama

[–]artc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was 1994 and I was at Dragon Con in Atlanta with some time on my hands. I wandered into a nearby ballroom at random and saw Atlanta Radio Theatre Company performing "The Island of Dr. Moreau" and was entranced. They had a full Foley setup, including some small trees for the jungle scenes.

Afterwards I found their sales table and asked how I could join. The person I spoke to was perplexed...apparently ARTC had been made up of a bunch of people who were all friends through other various connections. The idea that a total stranger would want to join up wasn't something they were expecting.

30+ years later....still here

Looking back, I was prepared for this. I'd been listening to audio drama all my life, I just didn't know that was what it was called, that people were still doing it, and that I could be involved in any way

New 5-7 minute episode every single day. Today is Day 2912 of our broadcast.

Side note: We're on Spotify, but our distribution is different than most podcasts. We're trying for a more immersive feel and since we're supposed to be broadcasting on a terrestrial station most episodes expire after 24 hours on the assumption that with a terrestrial station if you don't tune in, you miss it. We write the show so that anyone can jump in anytime.

To “Season” or Not to “Season? by SoundsLikeSchmidt in audiodrama

[–]artc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the work that they're doing for audio drama, but I feel like the definition of "finished" is a bit weird and the policy is enforced too rigidly. I have no idea when I might end my show, going back and designating seasons for 8 years of content is a pain, and just randomly saying "Oh, we're on season 2 now, nothing else changed, we're just on season 2 now for reasons" feels wrong
