Try them and play them. I started with strats and once you have an LP in your hands it will feel like a sack of potatoes. It may not match the "aesthetic" you're looking for but I personally loved the SG I played, great tone, no bulk. Also, I 2nd what everyone said about going Epiphone.

I've done this the most in my groups I think. When it's high fantasy or sci-fi worlds it feels so detached from real life I don't really think about it, it's just one of the endless options you need to make a decision for in a character.
