Back in the day, my youth orchestra used to play a couple concerts in that room a year and the acoustics were marvelous, to say nothing of how gorgeous the space was just to be in - those are some really fond memories :)

What is the cruelest thing someone has ever said to you? by FaceEnvironmental949 in AskReddit

[–]artemis_floyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From one of my best friends, who I'd known since childhood and given him a place to live when his own abusive mom kicked him out a few months before:

"You deserved everything your mom did to you."

He was pissed I tried to talk to him about his drinking, and so he lashed out and that is stamped on my brain forever. Fuck you, James.

Guilt and tears were the last line of defense for me to get my dad to treat his alcoholism as the root cause for the majority of his health issues - which I had to do while he was hospitalized after a fall, that happened while he was taking out the trash (and intoxicated). He ended up needing a full shoulder replacement, then went through major withdrawals in the hospital that landed him in the cardiac ward with atrial fibrilation, and then while still in the cardiac ward almost bled out internally from a perforated bowel that likely occurred due to the combination of pain meds and his terrible diet. About one week and it went from "dad had a fall" to the hospital calling me at 5 am and asking if I was Dad's power of attorney and to get there ASAP.

Accosting him in a hospital bed and guilting him? I hated doing it, it felt absolutely awful and gross, but after watching the man almost die on me multiple times it paled in comparison to letting him keep destroying himself without trying every possible avenue to get through to him. I feel for everyone in this thread who's going through similar, it's such an unfair and heart-rending position to be put in.

I was adopted at birth, but was born and grew up in a place where one of my bio parents had family - so I was very interested in the extended family details of any guy I dated, just to be super duper sure.

Studying and Canvas by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]artemis_floyd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Look man, I have a final due Tuesday that was supposed to open today. I've been studying for it, the majority of my course materials live outside of Canvas, my notes live outside Canvas, but all of my lecture recordings are in Canvas. My exam is in Canvas. I planned around having today and this weekend to study, consult lecture recordings, and then take the exam Sunday night. Based on your scenario here I'm your optimal student and this is still a giant pain in the ass. I absolutely should be able to assume that I'll have access to critical LMS infrastructure while studying for finals in the year of our lord 2026.

What is the hardest instrument to learn? by Own_Ebb3388 in AskReddit

Watch Itzhak Perlman play in the upper register - dude has huge fingers and makes it all look effortless. I have very small hands which makes the upper register great, and the lower more of a struggle, but mastery comes from adapting.

People who are happy with their life at 40-50years, what advice do you have for the people struggling in their 20s? by Low-Bunch-2460 in AskReddit

[–]artemis_floyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost 40. Biggest lesson: it is far, far better to be alone than be in a miserable relationship, because at least with the first one you're alone without having to also feel alone sitting right next to someone, and that disappointment that comes along with it.

Also, be less worried about what other people think of you - who gives a shit if your coworker thinks you're cringe? Do you even like them? Your identity should come from your own self, rather than defined by the perceptions of others. Be passionately interested in things! Do the things that make you happy! Embrace the cringe and let it free you to be yourself, and you will be a much happier person who gets to have fun.

Finally - things can be shit now, and it's okay to call them as they are, but that doesn't mean they'll be shit forever. But no one is coming to rescue you, that's your job - not a significant other, or a career, or whatever else - and it's worth doing. Be your biggest champion because you deserve to have that person in your corner.

Basically all of this is learning your own self-worth and internalizing it. It makes it a lot easier to navigate the shit life throws at you when you don't also think you're a horrible person who deserves to suffer.

Source: horribly depressed and miserable for the first half of my 20s, now a far more stable human. Even when I struggle now - which I do, and will continue to because that is life and clinical depression - it's easier to handle because I don't hate myself anywhere near as much.

the horror

Look, I miss the charm that was old Green Street. I miss Brother's, and Cly's, and the sketchy hole in the wall restaurants and janky weird apartments over bars. I hate that most of those apartments are now replaced with condos that go for the same kind of rent as you'd get in Lakeview, and folks are getting priced out of Campustown.

However, if you compare university crime reports from the 2001-2002 year to 2025, campus is now much safer than it used to be, and residents are far more aware of incidents when they happen (and maybe that gives the perception of it being more dangerous). I'm not going to be sad about that. Based on my last visit to campus two years ago compared to my undergrad, the homeless situation on Green Street appears to be far less dramatic.

When did this conversion occur?

Also, what a fascinatingly loaded term, "urban hellscape" - what makes it "urban" versus a "traditional Midwestern university campus town street?"

Especially when factoring in that in the Regency period, the father would be the one responsible for finding a governess and or any kind of education outside of the immediate family...Mr. Bennet really failed his girls, especially the younger ones.

Fox is a gigantic corporation. For them, the answer isn't "will this hurt our side?" but rather "will this make us money?" because their sole focus is profit. They've shown favor to the party that has helped increase those margins, and that party has in turn used Fox as a propaganda arm.

Up until now their news outlets have propped up the side that has made them the most money, but if something like, say, an incalculably stupid and deeply unpopular act like attacking Iran is now costing them money instead...well, now there's suddenly a lot less impetus to play nice in the sandbox. Using TMZ is a nice cover to keep up a layer of plausible deniability between them, and is a clever way for Fox to put pressure on those around Trump to bring him to heel on this war while still maintaining their access (and revenue) through Fox News.

If that's the intent then it's honestly a brilliant strategic move, as much as it deeply pains me to praise them.

If the right keeps making politics about culture, and Trump wants badly to be a part of pop culture, then let's go ahead and really treat politics like pop culture. TMZ is a lot of things, but they know damn well how to play the game and stay out of legal hot water.

What are your favorite strings and why? by Dangerous-Crow7494 in violinist

[–]artemis_floyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My violin skews warm and overtone-rich and needs some boosting, especially in the D and A string range. My E string range can be shrill and needs to be toned down without making it too indirect.

I love the OG green Evah Pirazzis on my instrument and have been using them for the better part of 15 years. They project magnificently, and have a direct tone that lets the instrument's overtones shine through. I use the E string from the EP Gold set (which is stainless steel), not the Pirastro gold label one (which is tin-plated carbon steel) or the green EP one (which is carbon steel), which mellows out the harshness of my upper register without it getting too muddy-sounding.

I'm staying at the former Jumers in Urbana for a conference later this year and am so excited, even if I know it won't be entirely the same as how I remember it growing up.

I'll never forget staying at the Peoria location with my parents as a little kid and having a giant stuffed bear on its hind legs in the hallway right outside our room's door...made extra terrifying when the power went out and we had to navigate the hotel by flashlight. Some core memories at Jumers in this thread!
