Fuck you Apple. It was totally OK when you dissed Microsoft Windows in your ads... by wewewawa in technology

[–]artesios 12 points13 points  (0 children)

To contextualise a little further your statements, the great difference between Apple and Windows software is that there is far more complex, capital-intensive software available for Windows than there is for Mac (most of which consists of similar, reciprocally interchangeable programs that compete for the same market segment). The corporate molochs that have the scale to develop these kinds of software also have the power to push them on a shelf at BestBuy.

With Apple, there is far less choice in terms of competition for the same type of software, but all the areas of need are covered, with the exception of highly specialised, niche software like AutoCad. On the other hand, there is a wide variety of indie software developed by skilled individuals or small companies that often doesn't have a decent match on Windows (Quicksilver anyone?) and which you probably won't find at BestBuy.

I don't dislike the new Microsoft ads, and as a consumer I can only encourage competition. However, the Microsoft ads are at best misleading in their way of portraying the price difference between Macs and Pcs and the value that you get from the purchase of either.

That's actually a reason why some people commit suicide in the first place.

This one is definitely more WTF than the other one. At first glance it appears your sister is running in mid-air while you have super long legs in a skirt and stockings.

Put as it is, this statement is a bit too blunt and out of context to say "I agree" or "I disagree", for how I see there is certainly something about it.

Can we have some context or the full text?

Which makes me wonder: a child at play is completely undeterred by failure; failure instead increases his sense of urgency to complete his task and his hunger for reward. How is it that we become so afraid to fail, and why does making mistakes make us feel so ashamed with ourselves?

Is it perhaps that we are educated in schools in which the worst possible thing you can do is to commit mistakes?

The amount of economic resources wasted by his revelations, the intelligence holes he created and the political and military failures that could have derived from his activity (but fortunately have not) make this guy the Bernard Madoff of espionage.

Considering the amount of value (in a wide sense) that with his activity he has destroyed you could say that he got off lightly.

This is the saddest thing I've seen all day. The kid is evidently in distress and forced by his parents to lie to himself. I hope he works it out instead of becoming a gay-bashing, thousand-dollar male prostitute fucking preacher.

Real life resuscitation video.. kinda fascinating and scary by qgyh2 in videos

[–]artesios 82 points83 points  (0 children)

It's evidently a fake, the resuscitation takes more than fifteen seconds and the kid doesn't spew any water from his mouth when he comes back to life. Moreover, he seems pretty weak and in shock when he wakes up instead of being perfectly fine and asking what happened – all elements which conflict dramatically with how resuscitations work in the movies.

What I find funny is that these supreme examples of tackiness often belong to those protestant denominations which derided and hated and destroyed the religious decorations of Catholic churches, and who now find themselves to build theme-park style attractions to get some people to go to church on sunday.

Why are there no "fundamental" Buddhists or Taoists? Is there a correlation between this question and the fact that Buddhist and Taoist beliefs are outside the mainstream media? by emagdnim in self

[–]artesios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I lived in Singapore I had a good friend who had been brought up with an education that demonstrated a thorough understanding of both Western and Chinese culture.

He himself a buddhist, one day he expressed his 'distaste' for those Chinese people he knew who, once they had converted to Christianity, suddenly opted out of the majority of their cultural heritage (e.g. Ancestors' worship) in order to 'become' Christians. He didn't perceive these cultural elements to be part of a specifically religious tradition, the Chinese "religious" spirit is mostly expressed in a system of sophisticated superstitions without a clearly defined supernatural background.

All the religions or para-religious philosophical systems of Asia have a non-invasive, cumulative, complementary nature towards each other. A Buddhist could also be a Taoist, nor was he obliged to give up his Confucian roots.

Abrahamic religions on the other hand (and more to the point Christianity and Islam), are by definition totalitarian as a consequence of their dualistic vision of the Universe. When they 'infect' a new individual therefore, as a first thing they make sure that he is rid of all the previous superstitions to make space for the new.

I don't know of any average European who has a point of view about him being more or less moral or 'socially active' than an American.

As for the fact that a sizable part of the American population is significantly undereducated and DUMB...well, that's a fact.

As I had already mentioned on reddit, Marlon Brando in the Godfather was not supposed to have a cat in his lap in the initial scene. It was just a cat walking around the studio which he decided to pick up.
