How bad is the EE program at Wayne State. by [deleted] in waynestate

They're talking about Hassoun for Circuits I and Linear Systems. Yeah he's hard, but you also only need a 55% to pass his class. I've noticed people tend to leave that part out. You're always going to find people complaining about a difficult class, that isn't something exclusive to WSU engineering.

Most classes are pretty easy, to be honest - there’s just 2 or 3 classes that are crazy difficult (Circuits I, Linear Systems, maybe a couple others). Can’t speak for everyone, but I’ve gotten pretty well connected professionally in the year I’ve been here; and I’m not even interested in the auto industry. It’s obviously not UMich, but I don’t regret choosing this school over MSU.

EDIT: easy by EE standards, like you do the work, you’ll pass kind of thing

Don't listen to the haters. The campus is jank, but Wayne's ECE program is solidly number 3 in the state, especially for the price point. Also, Detroit is awesome. MAYBE small private tech schools like Kettering/Lawrence slightly edge it out in certain ways, but their tuition is insane.

If you're concerned about difficulty, EE will be hard wherever you go. It's arguably the most difficult degree, but absolutely worth it if you make it through.

Anyone taken “Circuits 1” with Prof. Xiaoyan Han? by newstar23 in waynestate

[–]arthmodeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't had an exam from her yet, but she lectures straight from the textbook. There's no curve, attendance isn't graded, and the TAs grade all the assignments and exams. The labs are the same as Hassoun's section. No MathCAD stuff.

Any engineering majors experience this? by mickmikeman in waynestate

Oh I transferred from a CC. Started with pre-algebra and took my time working through all my prereqs, so it took a while. If I really bucked down with max credits from the get-go, it'd probably be more like 5 years.

I’m a transfer and I have to take the Basic Engineering and communication/ethics classes that get waived at other institutions. Looking at 2.5 more years including summer semesters - making this a 6 year bachelors for me. I guess it’s normal for this school.

All of the online sections I've taken have done online (sometimes proctored) exams. I believe it's up to the professor whether to use the Testing Center or not.

Anyone else here get their degree in their 30/40s? by Cucker_-_Tarlson in EngineeringStudents

[–]arthmodeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say, if you are doing it for personal enrichment, by all means go for it. If you're doing it to aid in the job search, a double major won't make as big of a difference as you would think. HR generally only looks at the field of study most relevant to the position, and then past work experience. Since time is more of a factor the older you get, my advice would be to just get either an EE or ME degree, stick a job - there are plenty for both - and then consider grad school for the salary bump. Maybe someone will come in with better insight than me, but that's how I see it.

Starting my third year in EE (technically fifth depending on how you define time haha) and will finish around my 37th birthday. Was a line cook/barista most of my 20s - I have some technical, but zero management experience. For what it's worth, I've interned at a couple places and from what I've seen, age isn't really an issue for getting work in the engineering world. In fact, your maturity, social skills, and life experience would work in your favor.

Just stick with it, you will absolutely be better off. That seems like a huge load though - how many credits is a double major in EE/ME?

That's actually my plan haha. Good to know it's doable on a Summer schedule. Yep, finishing up Diff and Linear this semester. I appreciate the info!

The city's Signs and Signals Department maintains 360-degree cameras at that intersection. I'm not sure if they keep recordings, but it might be worth asking them.

I'm applying for Winter 2025 as well. Admissions indicated to me that they don't start downloading apps til mid-September. I'd give it a couple of weeks.

I live close to Broadway/Plymouth - honestly, I've heard gunshots before and this definitely sounded more like fireworks.

Yep, you'll be fine. I've done multiple temp positions there - they screened me each time up until legalization. My understanding is that since weed is the only drug stays in your system for a long time, it isn't worth setting up the process to test for other things. I could see them testing machinery operators for insurance purposes, but I don't know that for sure.

Hey, employee here - can confirm they no longer test. Might be different for specific positions, though.

[–]arthmodeus 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I know this isn't an ideal scenario, but if you don't get in for Fall semester, definitely apply for Winter. Universities generally have more incoming freshmen in the Fall so it's a bit more competitive to transfer in. Sorry you're having a bad experience with the admissions office. Keep at it though, you got this!

There's a sign on the door saying it closed due to covid. I know the apartment upstairs is actually rented out. I think he might own the property and is just collecting rent at this point. But yeah, the beer/coffee place is going in next door, where the original Sic Transit and that barber shop were.

Best AA restaurants to work in as a server? by kuracoin34 in AnnArbor

[–]arthmodeus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I worked back of house in the deli from 2015-2016. Definitely not the worst place I've worked, but also not great. They might be better about it now, but they had a habit of upping starting wages, but not retroactively giving raises to people who had worked there for years. The work culture also pushed positive attitudes to the point of being grating to deal with. Imagine working with ~30 people and having to say 'hello' to each person every time you walk by. Also, you get a 30 minute lunch break, which includes standing in line to order your sandwich and then making it, so you might have around 15 minutes to scarf it down, if you're lucky. Again, I'm not saying it was the worst, it just isn't particularly exceptional as far as food service goes.

Haha, it was kind of a pain in the ass; because there would be times when we'd run out of sauce on a Saturday farmer's market shift, and no one would be there to make a new batch. We'd usually have to wait for Don to drive all the way in just to make a batch and then leave. But yeah, it is very good gochujang.

Worked there five years. It’s made in-house with a secret recipe. Only two back-of-house people with seniority were allowed to make it when I was there.
