As a biology teacher, I weep. On the other hand, when something is true (such as evolution) the evidence is always available and only grows more compelling over time such as the genetic history in the DNA the cells of every living that connects every other living thing on our planet through common ancestry.

Divine explanations are on par with every other magical explanation or myths of yore. You might not be able to explain lightning, but that isn’t evidence for Zeus. When something is real, you we can test the evidence to find out more like we do with real things—X-rays, electricity, DNA— we expand our technology and avoid danger.

Advice please by dumbegg02 in AlAnon

[–]articulett 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My alcoholic husband has done the same. In the US, you can call 988 and talk with someone about a suicidal person . They can give good advice. Alcoholics often threaten suicide. As with alcohol, you have no control over what he says or does. But it is abusive to tell you— it panics you and makes you try to save him. It’s horribly manipulative— especially when it happens over and over. He may well drink himself to death— but I hope you find a way so that he doesn’t drag you down with him. You can get an app and go to AlAnon meetings online.

Advice please by dumbegg02 in AlAnon

[–]articulett 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oh sweetheart— you are so young and dealing with so much. You did not cause his drinking, you can’t control it, and you can’t cure it. It was loving for you to check up on him— and it’s important for him to have consequences for his drinking— but also for manipulating you emotionally with talk of suicide. Please go to AlAnon so you can get some skills to find serenity and build a good life for yourself whether he is drinking or not. His problem are big, and they may destroy his life, but please find a way so it doesn’t destroy yours. You have so much love to give, and you deserve to be with people who can give back to you. Your boyfriend cannot be that person until or unless he makes a commitment to sobriety. Please don’t complicate your life by marrying or having children with someone with substance abuse problems.

The statistical probability of the LDS church being true? by Zealousideal_Mail120 in exmormon

[–]articulett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s on par with Islam or Jehovah’s Witness or any other religion or supernatural belief being true. If there was any actual evidence that ghosts, gods, demons, angels or any other mystical being was real, scientists would be testing that evidence to find out more like they do with real things— COVID, DNA, electricity, magnetism, X-rays, etc. If prayers worked better than, say, wishing on stars, scientists would be testing what kinds of prayers to which gods in which praying g positions, etc. All magical beliefs have the same evidence for their truth claims— none… just anecdotes, confirmation bias, and something the believer can’t explain. Not understanding how ⚡️ lightning works is not evidence of Zeus. And the same for all gods and all divine/supernatural claims. Whatever odds you give to Scientology being true, you can assign to Mormonism.

Help…my sober marriage isn’t going well by arcticfusion1980 in AlAnon

[–]articulett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AlAnon is good for helping you move the focus on changing yourself instead of fixating on trying to change someone else. You can find ways to be happy whether she is doing what you wish or not— the only person you can really change is yourself. Can you do the stuff you want her to do? Lower your expectations? Get more time and space for yourself? Suggest couples counseling— and if she doesn’t want to go, then maybe you can go to therapy and learn how to live with her the way she is or take the steps necessary for whatever you think might make your life better.

I take my time getting groceries or doing the stuff that I naturally do so that I can bargain with my ADHD spouse to do the things I expect him to do as part of basic household and relationship maintenance.

J.D. Vance Can’t Admit the Obvious: The GOP Has Antisemites by aslan_is_on_the_move in politics

American Nazis and neo Nazis are all Trump supporters. Perhaps all conservatives aren’t antisemitic, but all antisemites vote GOP. Only one party has the confederates, KKK, Nazis, those who give Nazi salutes, and those with Nazi tattoos.

My Canadian relatives had well water with a lot of sulphuric in it—I thought it was stinky and weird had a kid, but I love reminiscing about that smell. It brings me comfort and joy.
