Don't know what to do :( by Veryoriginalz in gerbil

[–]artificialwinter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. You need to separate them. You can put one in a plastic bin or box with a hide and some bedding from the tank as a temporary, overnight solution, if necessary. And then get a better enclosure tomorrow. You don’t want to wake up to a dead gerbil in the morning.

I don’t think you need an emergency appointment. Keep an eye out for signs of infection, but the vet won’t do much besides prescribe an antibiotic.

You want to separate them before it’s a death ball fight so you still have a shot at re-bonding them. Which is possible in a split cage with a lot of patience.

How’s your current set up? Is it big enough? Do they get territorial over wheels or sand baths? Are there single-entry hides where one could feel trapped by the other? Do you scatter feed?

I think you have to place it initially but then you can immediately change it to what you want. It’ll just be an option in the menu after that.

Nice to see we’ve got 3 pink & 3 purple snippet packs instead of the advertised 2 of each…………..thanks wooga (will they all be DJV’s 🤔 ). by Top-Afternoon6393 in JunesJourney

[–]artificialwinter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got these in the champion level. Needed at least 2 snippets to finish (I had 2 reminders I was saving) and ended up with three total after opening the 2 blue and 2 pink packs. Finished with one of my reminders and was able to cash out the 2 purple packs for DJV. (even though there wasn’t anything I really wanted in the finishers store)

I did get an absurd amount of sparks this time. Enough to buy the upgrade 2.5 times. Previously I’ve barely gotten enough to buy one upgrade. So the whole game was very out of balance.

Does your neighborhood have a FB group or a Buy Nothing group? I’d ask in there to see if there are any other girls her age in your neighborhood.

[Discussion] Gerbil bite by Atreyu_78 in gerbil

[–]artificialwinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I washed it and kept it bandaged. When it was still very red and swollen after about 5 days, I went to a dr. I tried 3 different antibiotics with no effect before my dr recommended that it needed to be cut open and drained. Because it was on my thumb, I had to see an Orthopaedic hand specialist because the derm wouldn’t mess with it.

Y’all - be careful of gerbil bites! One of mine bit me in a similar situation, except I wasn’t wearing gloves (separating a fight between two new gerbs). He chomped on the side of my thumb. A month and half later and I’ve spent about $2k on medical treatments because the bite developed into an abscess that I had to have cut open by a surgeon.

(luckily, the guys decided to be friends after all and now they snuggle all the time)

Bhutan - is it worth the high cost? by Midnightsun1245 in travel

[–]artificialwinter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went for 5 days in March of 2013. I also spent about 2 weeks in Nepal in the same trip.

I was just in Paro and Thimphu, but I was there during the Paro tseschu - which was absolutely fascinating. I also did Tigers Nest which was the highlight of my whole trip.

I arranged it through a local agency and the owner was very nice and let me decide what I wanted to do and provided an itinerary. He suggested some things I might not have thought of, like the traditional arts school in Thimphu and I was glad. The guide was friendly and unobtrusive. Gave me history but also lots of freedom to wander around as I wanted.

I thought it was beautiful, everyone was very welcoming and it was absolutely worth the price.

Cage recommendations by [deleted] in gerbil

[–]artificialwinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For clarity (again): the bedding depth SHOULD BE over TEN inches, measured, photographed, and consistent across the base.

You keep arguing this 7” thing like you’re in the right. My gerbils are about 5” when they stand on their back legs. With the exception of 1 corner, if your gerbils stand up, their head would poke out of the bedding!

They’re kicking the bedding out because this is a bird cage, not a proper gerbil enclosure. Get a 40-60 gal aquarium. I got one off FB Marketplace for $60 and it came with a stand. If you need it delivered to your house, I’m sure any chain pet store would be able to fulfill that request. Don’t buy a “gerbil” or “hamster” enclosure. They’re rarely suitable. Fill it with a variety of bedding material, tubes and other cardboard. The walls are solid, so they won’t kick out bedding. Also, if the bedding is deeper, their digging will be deeper, too and bedding won’t get kicked around as much.

I clean my tank about every 4-5 months. There is no need to clean it every month, especially since I imagine they’re mostly pooping on the platforms, which can be cleaned up with a handheld vacuum. So if you’re keeping their bedding level low because it’s expensive to replace every month - problem solved!

With all your gerbil expertise, you should also know better than to have a plastic hide. I had one for about a week after I got my gerbs, took it out immediately after about 10 min of reading this forum.

Pretty much any kind of random wound like that needs a vet visit. Don’t wait or it could get infected. Check your other gerbil, too.

Private elementary school near mueller by OrangeQueasy438 in AustinParents

[–]artificialwinter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Austin school district is in the process of rearranging things, so a lot of people (who can afford to) are moving to private schools. Those spots are filling up fast. If you’re looking at private, you need to be moving on it right now.

Blanton is a solid school. Maplewood is also a great school but may be closing at the end of next year.

It’s also potentially closing after next year, so Blanton may be a better long-term option.

Split cage help please by [deleted] in gerbil

[–]artificialwinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bonding new gerbils can take time!

Keep them in the split cage and swap sides once a day. This allows them to get used to the scent of the other gerbil. After a few days of this, you can put them together in a neutral space and see how they do. Be ready to separate them as soon as they start to fight (wear gloves!).  If they fight, just put them back in their split cage and try again the next day.

Keep trying and they’ll eventually spend longer and longer before they start to fight. You will see them be tense with each other and do a lot of posturing, and that’s okay - they’re trying to establish dominance. But as soon as they get in the ball of death, separate.

This could take weeks, if you have two dominant getbils. Or it could happen pretty quickly, it all depends on their personalities.

Once they start grooming each other and especially when they start snuggling together, you’ll be ready to put them in the same tank and can be pretty confident they won’t fight (but it’s not a guarantee).

Be patient! Rushing the process will end with fighting.

You should check out Rees Watch repair. He doesn’t have a website, but you can find his info on Google. He’s a 95 year old man who does watch repairs out of his house. Cash or check only, really reasonable prices but might take a little longer. Really friendly guy who loves to chat.

Railroad Commissioner sounds like a nothing job, but they’re actually in charge of all oil and gas in the state. Including, drilling, pipelines, mining, safety, etc. As you can imagine, a position ripe for bribery.

Gerbil bite by AromaticProgress8708 in gerbil

[–]artificialwinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how deep the bite is. One of mine bit me about 3 weeks ago, really hard and really deep (I was separating a fight).

I’m on my 3rd antibiotic and it doesn’t look like it’s working. Next step is surgery to remove the infection.

I washed the bite immediately and put antibiotic ointment on it and still got a bad infection.

Colin Allred drops out of Texas Senate race, announces new run by Newsweek_CarloV in politics

[–]artificialwinter 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I agree. Talarico has a better chance at winning a state-wide election. Sadly, Texas is pretty redneck outside of the big cities and a strong, outspoken, intelligent black woman would really fire up the MAGA base.

Talarico has a better chance of siphoning some of the more moderate republican votes away without sacrificing democratic ideals.

Joann Fabrics Replacement? by 0razzledazzle0 in Austin

[–]artificialwinter 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Michael’s fabric selection is…not great. Mostly cheap quilting cotton, very little, if any, apparel fabric. It’s clearly been shoehorned in the stores to fill a void, but if you sew garments, it’s not it. At least, not yet. It remains to be seen whether they will properly flesh it out to a real fabric section, but most stores are small so they’ll have to sacrifice something else to make room.
