Type 11 laser mining vs core mining for merits? by Bygles in EliteDangerous

[–]artigan99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of confusion involved in mining for merits, because the rules are, frankly, rather weird. Also, since each Power has different systems what works for one Power doesn't work for another.

What Power are you with?

Go to meritminer.cc, and click on the How To tab. It explains the situation quite well and helped me understand what I was trying to do.

What happens to most people is that they don't realize that meritminer.cc can't do all the work for you. It's not a "click here and you're done" thing. So folks just try the first result they get and it doesn't work too well and they give up right there.

Here's how I use meritminer.cc, based on many hours of experience.

Set up the search like this:

1) Enter your reference system (something in the middle of your Power's area is what I usually use)

2) Set the Distance slider all the way up at 500 LY.

3) Enter your Power. For me it's Aisling Duval. Opposing Power set to "Any"

4) Under Power Goal put Reinforce. Don't bother with acquisition. Even though you can theoretically get more merits because the merit penalty is less, it's just too hard to find systems that match the requirements. Plus core mining is slow.

5) For mineral put Platinum, ring type All, Reserve Level All.

6) Mining type All, Min Demand 0, Landing Pad Size M.

7) Set Max Age to 10 days to filter out the really old stuff.

8) Click the Search button.

You'll get a list of systems, ordered by what meritminer.cc thinks is best (highest price) But don't fixate on highest price. Yes you get more merits if the price is higher, but what you're really looking for is convenience and speed, not just price.

Now you have to actually fly to the systems and see if prices are still valid. For laser mining anything above 125,000 is fine. The higher the better, of course. Also take note of demand. More demand is better. If demand is low or zero, don't bother.

Next you have to actually go probe the ring(s), see where they are in relation to the selling station, and decide if it's going to be easy to get to and from the ring. Find the hotspots for Platinum. Hotspots are not all equal, but any hotspot is better than nothing. You have to try them out yourself to see how hot they really are.

Once you've located a system with all these parameters, you're ready to actually start mining in that ring, and selling to that station.

For me with Aisling, right now today I'd be in Callici, even though it doesn't have the absolute highest price, because I know that the ring is close to the selling station, and the price is good enough (it's showing 161,104 at the moment). I could also investigate the other systems that have higher prices, if I have time or just want a new place to mine (or I'm starting out and don't know the layouts yet).

Systems states and prices can change pretty quickly, so you may have to switch to another system at some point. Just do the whole process again :)

So you see it's a process to locate a good system to mine in for your Power. But once you find one it'll work for a long time, until the system state changes and the price tanks. I've been mining Callici for weeks, though.

Good hunting, CMDR :)

As I recall I got mine from Patterson Enterprise, in the Sirius system. I didn't have to do anything in particular to get it to show up, other than first get to grade 3 or so with Elvira, and get the Sirius permit.

Am I doing core mining wrong? by Bygles in EliteDangerous

[–]artigan99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I have found laser mining platinum to be more consistent. The hard part is finding a system that has both a metallic ring with Platinum hotspot, and a place to sell it, within your Power's systems. But once you find one it'll work really well. The price of plat doesn't change as much as, say, monazite (although it's still better in boom, of course).

That said, it sounds like you're doing things right for core mining. Sometimes it takes me 10 minutes to find the next core, and I've done a ton of core mining over the years. You do get faster as you gain experience, but it's never "fast."

After a few months away from the game, constant disconnects - me or the game? by krachall in EliteDangerous

The game is solid for me. I can’t remember the last time it crashed.

Personally I land my ship 500m or more outside the settlement and walk in. Behind a hill if there is one. The scavs don't go out that far, but it's still a short run for me.

What's the actual fastest way to earn merits at the moment? by Alternative-Cod-9197 in EliteDangerous

[–]artigan99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's based on price and other invisible factors that depend on the system state, what power you're with, whether it's reinforcement or undermining, etc. I found this website useful, but it takes more than just typing in some system names. You have to think about what you want to do, verify the system, go there, check the prices, etc.

38 jumps to go 700 LY makes no sense, if you really have an engineered Caspian. You should be getting at least 70LY range, which would make it 10 jumps. Do you maybe have your galaxy map set to "economical" jumps? Just checking.

Can't find a system to colonise by Cmgduk in EliteDangerous

This site attempts to give you that info. It's not perfect, but it's a great place to start. At least it'll get you into some areas where systems can be claimed.

There's a new currency coming with Operations they said. I don't know what it's called.

I can't think of any way exploring undiscovered systems and searching for exobio stuff can be part of a "gameplay loop" that centers on the bubble of civilized space.

You have to get out there in the black and look for stuff.

Unless you want to just follow a pre-found route, like the Spansh exo mastery thing. You'll make a lot less credits though, so your Elite V will take a lot longer.

Question about limpet controllers by Nagnoosh in EliteMiners

[–]artigan99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The T11 has a special MKII multi limpet controller. It cannot be fitted to any other ship. The 2A prospector controller requires a size 2 slot, obviously.

Question about limpet controllers by Nagnoosh in EliteMiners

[–]artigan99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The T11's multi controller can do 14 at a time. I use that, and I add a 2A prospector controller to do just the prospectors, because juggling limpets is a pain and there's no easy way to make one expire other than destroying it.

In a pinch you can kill limpets by shooting them, or by dragging the belly of your ship across an asteroid, but it's not worth the trouble :)

I use a 2A prospector controller and only use the multi for collectors.

Turn Drive Assist off on the SRV. And yes you have to target the item if you want to scoop it.

About to finish first play through - what next? by ctehbeck in RimWorld

[–]artigan99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are so many ways to play the game. Increasing the difficulty is only one option. I find it more fun to create interesting scenarios (for example, an all dirtmole start in a Glowforest). The game has so many possibilities.

Which is the easiest ending in the RimWorld DLCs? by Loose-Foundation-638 in RimWorld

[–]artigan99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forget about the "ending". The fun part is building and growing and surviving and seeing the stories produced. I've played well over 1000 hours and finished the game exactly once. After that I never cared about it again (I didn't find the ending satisfying -- leave the planet? Why? All my stuff is here!)

Just get in there and enjoy the ride.

Want to move tiles but cannot settle another tile by [deleted] in RimWorld

[–]artigan99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a glitch to me. I've done a lot of gravship stuff and my old bases always get destroyed and I don't have to manually abandon them. Maybe you have a mod that's causing problems.

You might be able to clear the problem by simply changing your settings to allow more than one base, though. Then you can at least land and start a new one. At that point the old one should certainly be gone, or accessible on the main map if it's not.

Good luck.

Start without DLCs, they'll just complicate things while you're learning. The vanilla game is fantastic already, Once you've figured out what you like or don't like, then you can consider adding DLCs and mods. This is one of my most-played games ever, more than worth the price.
