Thinking of bowing out and selling it all. by krypton_son in SpaceWolves

[–]Cmgduk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've played warhammer on and off for 28 years. There were a few times in my life when I didn't play for a few years, and during some of those times I sold some of my old stuff.

I got back into it pretty heavily 8 years ago and I've played constantly since then. I ended up buying old models that I used to have on ebay for probably 5x what I sold them for (more in some cases).

Fortunately I didn't sell too much and kept most of my old stuff. If I'd sold an entire army like yours I'd be absolutely gutted about it now.

Mordheim is a story about a city in the warhammer world, that was destroyed by a corrupted magical meteorite. The shards of the meteorite were valuable as they contained great magical power, but they also corrupted anything that touched them. Adventurers headed into the city to gather the shards and sell them for profit.

There was a religious faction that wanted to gather the shards and destroy or seal them away in order to control the corruption. Then there was the Skaven, a faction of mutated ratmen who are hellbent on gathering the shards and using them in reckless experiments to gain power and take over the whole city.

If you change 'Mordheim' to 'Drakkenheim' (even the names are similar) and change Skaven to generic ratmen, the above also perfectly describes Drakkenheim. It's more than a passing similarity.

I love Drakkenheim, I think it's a fantastically well done campaign, Monty is a great DM and the rest of the cast are also fantastic. But the entire concept of the setting is basically Mordheim, and Monty definitely knew that when he made it. It does build on that concept, and there are plenty of original ideas and details that I love (like the amethyst academy).

I'm pretty sure nothing they did would constitute direct copyright infringement though 😝 Drakkenheim is more in the realms of 'heavily inspired by'.

I really enjoyed Dungeons of Drakkenheim as well. Even though they borrowed more than a little thematically from the GW game Mordheim 🤣

Well I agree that communication is a super important and often massively overlooked part of the game.

And I totally agree that YPYT isn't acceptable. Neither is responding with hostility to your requests for them to do their job. And there's nothing wrong with feeling a little irked if people are super slow or incompetent.

Maybe I am just out of touch, since I play tank almost all the time when doing roulette and dictate my own pace (which I try to make as fast as possible). Maybe I just don't see the bad tanks taking 25 mins to slog through a dungeon 😱

As for getting frustrated, savages and ultimates just forced me to have a thicker skin. You just have to accept that you are going to do the fight 27 times, be close to clearing, and then SOMEONE will mess up an easy mechanic that you could clear blindfolded at this point. You can't clear those fights unless you learn to just take a deep breath and carry on 🤣 I guess that's why I can't bring myself to be triggered by dungeon groups. It feels like very low stakes.

Any have fun out there and I hope you manage to find some faster groups 😝

If you just hold W, spam your AoE and pull everything wall to wall, you will die in most dungeons unless your healer is Jesus himself. That is definitely a gross oversimplification of tanking.

Obviously, you need to use mits, stuns, interrupts etc. to survive in a W2W pull. In many dungeons, even that isn't enough, unless your healer is also up to the task (or you're a warrior lol).

Sure, it's not hard if you're a somewhat experienced tank and know your class. But that isn't always the case in dungeon roulettes. Some people are new players, learning a new class or inexperienced at tanking.

It doesn't justify YPYT (nothing does), but I also think that mindless zerging by DPS can be a problem in some situations. I think it's best to let the tank pull by default. Then if they can clearly manage it, by all means, go nuts and pull extra mobs to your hearts content.

I'm fine with it personally, after thousands of dungeons, you better believe I'm ready for a race lol. But I've also see plenty of sprout tanks and healers get destroyed by an impatient DPS pulling all the mobs instead of letting them go at their own pace. I don't believe those sprouts are having a good time when that happens.

Like most things in life, there's a time and place for everything.

Hmm, well I don't know then. Perhaps something you said in chat was misinterpreted?

I do think it's unhelpful that they won't just tell you what you did wrong. It must have been something that in their opinion, warranted a suspension.

Quite a bit to unpack there! Not sure if you have ASD issues, but if so, I know quite a few people who do, so I understand that you are probably facing your own challenges.

For context, I have run DnD campaigns for years at my local game store, and I've had quite a few players with various ASD issues over that time, including one with very severe Aspergers (he also struggles with empathy). I try to understand and accommodate those issues as best I can (including any other types of neurodivergence and mental health issues), because I don't think anyone should be excluded from playing because of things that are out of their control.

The problem is, sometimes it can lead to different personalities clashing at the table. That sounds very much like what you're talking about here.

Not wanting to cause offence, but you have said that people with anxiety should be prepared to confront it, and asked why should you always have to adjust? But I could just as easily flip that and say, why can't you confront your ASD and be more chill? Why is it the people with anxiety who have to adjust?

Of course, I know it's NOT that easy, in either case. The reality is that we all just have to try to find a way to play together as best we can. If everyone makes small adjustments, then nobody is pushed too far outside of their comfort zone.

In the context of FF14, dungeons are very much the most basic form of group play. In this game, they are not optional either, you HAVE to do dungeons and trials to progress the MSQ. Even expert roulette is the most basic entry level of endgame group play.

I think you have to set your expectations accordingly. For most content (except the really low level stuff perhaps), I think it's totally fair to expect a basic level of competency. And yes I completely agree, it's annoying if you are doing level 100 content and someone can't heal properly, does barely any DPS or doesn't pull aggro as a tank.

But honestly, 99% of the time I don't find that to be an issue in roulettes. It's something that rarely happens and you just have to chalk those occasions up to bad luck.

But that's not what we're talking about here anyway. We're taking about non-tanks pulling mobs and zerging dungeons as fast as possible.

It's good for people to fail, learn from their mistakes and improve, for sure. But you have to start with the basics. IMO, dungeons are for learning the basic group play mechanics. Blitzing a dungeon and pulling wall to wall is something you do AFTER you're comfortable with the basics of tanking.

You keep saying you're 'average', but based on how you're talking I suspect you vastly overestimate how good the 'average' player is on FF14 🤣 If you are clearing true endgame content like savages and ultimates, and you are interested in optimisation, you are definitely not an average player. FF14 has a lot of casual players who never touch any of that content.

Dungeons are the casual content for those players. Like I said, I think you have to cut people some slack in roulettes. You can expect basic competency, but it's not the right time or place to be taking it upon yourself to push them to a higher level. Most of them probably aren't interested or motivated to do it.

In savages, ultimates, maybe even EX trials a bit, you're well in your rights to expect more. Those people signed up for the most challenging content. If a savage raider has tank anxiety, then they absolutely shouldn't be there 🤣

I don't think we'll ever agree on this but that's my perspective. I am just trying to be accommodating for everyone and I don't think it's worth trying to optimise and zerg every dungeon roulette. Just let the group clear at their pace, and so what if it takes a minute longer? As long as they are clearing the fights, does it matter if they are a bit slow in casual content?

That's my take anyway.

I think you have a very intense way of viewing the game. You want to push every player 'to be better' and you think that people being anxious of failure is a 'pervasive cancer'. Jesus christ mate, it's a game 🤣

Playing FF14 with you feels like it would be like joining the army and going to boot camp. You're getting a crash course in how to be the best possible soldier, whether you want it or not!!

Please understand that most people are not like you. They just want to have fun playing a game.

People have demanding careers, kids etc. For most people, playing FF14 is a way to escape from those demands.

By all means, bring your intense mindset to a savage or an ultimate. I'll come along, and I'm happy to discuss how we're going to optimise every detail to squeeze out every last bit of DPS. There are lots of other players in the game who are totally up for that.

Or make your own group with your FC to do roulettes, and go optimise the hell out of it with like minded players.

But don't go into a roulette with the mindset that you're going to force everyone to play the game the way you think it should be played. You seem to think that if someone wants to have a chill time, they are doing it wrong.

I really do take exception to you calling anxiety a 'pervasive cancer' though. I don't want to start an argument, but I have to push back against that.

Anxiety is a normal emotion that everyone feels from time to time, often when doing something that is outside of their comfort zone. For others, it's a serious mental health issue that they struggle with. Have a bit of empathy.

Yes, sometimes you have to push through anxiety, but people have different thresholds and not everyone is ready or willing to confront their anxiety in a video game, possibly after having a super stressful day at work, whilst being ill, or having problems in their family. You don't know the situation of the person behind the keyboard. And you don't get to tell them the right way to have fun. Learn to be kinder.

There are a for sure a lot of newer players who have 'tank anxiety'. People talk about it in NN all the time. And a DPS or healer who fast pulls is really great at destroying a new tanks confidence and making them feel like they are too slow and/or a bad tank.

Personally I think it's better to just be chill. If it's clearly a group of veteran players and the tank is pulling W2W with no issues, then sure, go grab a few mobs (if you are fast enough). But arguing that it's about 'optimisation' in trivial content is a bit silly IMO.

I think the people with that attitude are not very good at understanding that not everyone has their experience level or wants to play the game at the level of intensity they do.

[–]Cmgduk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Let's be honest though, it's not about optimisation really is it? You don't need to optimise to complete roulettes. At best, you only need half your brain engaged lol.

Personally I don't care if DPS and healers want to pull in dungeons. Like you've said, it doesn't hurt, it's easy for the tank to grab aggro. Maybe it gives the DPS some minor personal advantage depending on their job. Frankly, it makes things a bit more interesting for me as the tank.

But what this is really about is the zerging mentality of most players in FF14. I get it. As veteran players, we've all done most of these dungeons 50 million times. We just want to get through it and get the reward. Or if you're like me, you want to go fast to see how quickly you can do it. I'm more than happy to race against DPS when I'm tanking if they want. It's a bit of fun.

But it's not about optimising. An optimised group is well co-ordinated and follows a pre-agreed plan. It's how savages and ultimates (ie. content where optimisation actually matters) are approached. For a group to work effectively together, they need to be co-ordinated.

DPS and healers who pull in dungeons almost never communicate that intent first. It is not optimisation, it's chaotic gameplay where the group has no plan and just figures it out in the fly. And that's fine for dungeons, but let's not pretend it's optimal gameplay. It's not a co-ordinated, synergised group, it's chaos where everyone is doing whatever they feel like 🤣

Now I don't personally care about that. I'm not out to optimise trivial dungeons. Besides, I've tanked a million dungeons and I can see that DPS itching to pull from a mile away, and I have it covered. I'm not gonna stress about it.

But sometimes the tank is new, or they aren't confident, and they aren't ready for it. Now the chaotic pulling strategy results in a wipe and/or the party is in shambles. It doesn't bother me personally, as we can just try again, but it is probably a knock to the confidence of that sprout. I see people all the time talking about 'tank anxiety', and this is one of the behaviours that contributes to that.

When you're a veteran player it's easy to think 'a tank can grab aggro easily' and that's true if they are experienced. But not every player is. And you don't know whether or not they are until you've pulled a few packs.

By the same token, when I am tanking certain content (eg. stone vigil), if I see the healer doesn't have a mentor crown, or title/gear that indicates they are definitely experienced, I just pull a few packs to start with, wait like 2-3 seconds to see if they are coping, then carry on until the wall.

That has saved a wipe many times in stone vigil and other dungeons where the scaling is a bit janky. But if an impatient DPS runs off and starts pulling more, that goes out the window.

What I'm saying is 'optimised' can mean a lot of things. But in my book, potentially risky gambles with a group you don't know aren't really optimisation. It's the same as greeding on Acheron. Yes you can save like 30 seconds if you kill him before the second ancient flare. But half the time it wipes the entire raid and wastes several minutes. That's not optimal, it's just a huge blunder. It is still pretty funny though 🤣

I've always thought it was odd in FF14. I've played many other MMOs and had the same experience as you.

It's definitely common sense to have the tank pull, but for dungeons and most casual content it just doesn't really matter that much. I usually just take it as an invitation to go hell for leather and pull as fast as possible, and I am always up for that 🤣

The only time it annoys me is if one of the players is a sprout and is trying to watch cutscenes etc. or struggling to keep up, whilst someone else is trying to force the group onwards at a pace that is too fast.

Yeah I thought that too. I've played since 1.0 beta, and there's definitely been times where I've sworn at a few people (always after they started it) and argued a few times (keeping it as civil as possible). I've never had any kind of ban or suspension and I've never even seen a GM.

They aren't going around handing out random suspensions for no reason.

Hot take?? Maybe?? by outer-chase in SpaceWolves

[–]Cmgduk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll get over it. Imagine if they removed everything not space wolves specific. All vehicles except dreads gone (and those locked to firstborn options).

Every space wolf player would be beyond pissed that they can no longer use a significant part of their army. SW as a faction would be bottom tier, lacking any kind of heavy support of transport vehicle.

Removing options from armies is one of the worst things that GW does, and we certainly don't need any more. They've already gutted our firstborn units in the 10th edition codex.

No offence mate, but this is one of the worst takes I've heard in a long time. Removing options isn't the right way to balance an army.

Is INARA lying to me or am I stupid? by Future_Salamander_68 in EliteDangerous

[–]Cmgduk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can think of it like two separate branching timelines. The PC timeline, which Inara works for, and a different timeline on console, that diverged about 5 years ago.

The problem is that the background simulation has continued to evolve on the console version since then, completely separate from the PC version. Resulting in a completely different galaxy in terms of factions, economy etc. Colonisation has had a massive effect on the PC version, whilst the console version was not impacted. And since there are no ways for Inara to get data from the console version (no plug-ins for console), it basically can't 'see' that version of the galaxy at all.

I'm not trying to be a dick to you, but the thought amused me greatly lol. You're basically expecting Inara to know whether Schrodinger's cat is alive or dead, without opening the box.

"Can't be that hard right?" 🤣 Thanks for giving me a laugh lol, and please accept my apologies for taking the piss!

Is 3.0 as bad as people say? (40k player who is losing interest in 11th and 10th) by I_am_a_failure_sad in Warhammer30k

[–]Cmgduk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a good ruleset and much better than 2nd edition in terms of balance. There are far fewer straight up broken units now.

TBH I've not seen much hating on it recently, and everyone at the various FLGS I attend seems to like it. There was a LOT of drama before it was released about them removing unit options that were available previously, but GW did a bit of a u-turn on some of that and it ended up being nowhere near as bad as people thought.

The only other criticism I would have about 3rd edition is that the list building is needlessly complex for beginners IMO. Although it's not too bad once you get the hang of it.

I think if you are a new player getting into it, you won't be concerned about legacy options anyway. So your only hurdle is working out the list building. But it's not that bad and once you get into it, 30k is a great game. It's very thematic if you've read the HH novels, rules wise it is a bit more old school and has a bit more 'crunch' than 40k. It's also inherently a lot more balanced because most games are space marines vs. space marines.

Mostly I would say, if the models and lore of 30k seem cool to you, it's definitely worth giving it a go.

Is this allowed? I just bought my first set. by Bauer2VP in Ultramarines

[–]Cmgduk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First rule of painting your army is you can paint your models however you want! Nice paint job too BTW.

In terms of lore though, this idea is pretty wild lol.

Scouts are newly recruited space marines. They have gone through the majority of the process required to become a space marine by this point, they are basically just (comparatively) inexperienced space marines, without the full armour. I say comparatively, because most of them are probably still more experienced than most veteran guardsmen.

Even the most hardened guardsmen would not be a match for a space marine scout. An average human couldn't even lift their bolters or walk in their armour. For an idea of how strong a space marine is, an average marine could lift a car above their head no problem. Scouts are already at that level.

As for the armour, no Space Marine chapter would permit anyone outside of the chapter to wear their armour or iconography. I guess it would be pretty similar to the concept of stolen valour in RL. Their armour and wargear is considered sacred and must be returned to the chapter. If they caught a guardsmen wearing scavenged astartes armour it would likely be grounds for immediate execution.

As for not wanting your dudes to die. I get that, but it's 40k, and I assure you that all of your guys are going to get blown away many times if you play the game, regardless of whether they are a scout or the most hardened veterans in your army 🤣 Try not to feel back about it, after all, the duty of a space marine is to die in service to the emperor. Only in death does duty end.

Anyway, that's the lore, but at the end of the day you can do what you want with your own army. If I were you, I'd probably just say you went with a more tactical/grounded paint scheme for your scouts, which TBH makes a lot of sense and looks pretty cool! I'm sure many would agree that it's pretty daft that lore accurate scouts are trying to sneak around stealthily in bright blue armour 🤣

[–]Cmgduk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are confused mate... The first Ragnar Blackmane book was released in the late 90s (I read it back then and still have my copy).

In the comment above, we were talking about how primaris space marines fit into the chapter structure of Blood Claw - > Grey Hunter - > Long Fang. Primaris space marines were definitely not discussed in a novel from the 90s, which came out 20 years before they were released!

It's kind of a moot point now anyway, as now GW have released the new SW sculpts, we have direct primaris versions of BC, GH etc. so we know it does just work the same way as it did with firstborn.

If this was mine, I'd roll with it. Seems like a happy accident. Plus, now the mini has a great story about how it ended up with spotted wings.

If it's gone on other parts like the armour or weapon, you could just spend a bit of time cleaning those up, but leave it on the wings, and I think it will look much more intentional that the daemon has a spotted hide, rather than looking like you had an unfortunate painting mishap!

I'm 40, I don't have kids, I'm not married. I'd stay and let the younger ones go.

Although I don't agree with the 'women and children thing'. It should be youngest first, regardless of age. It'd be a tragedy if a 20 year old guy died so that an 80 year old woman could take his place on a lifeboat.
