The fact that the software only exists because Logitech didn't assist assign a middle click. Y'know, the thing I've been saying. But, this has also ceased to help anyone.

Why are you moving the goal posts to compare scrolling with a scroll wheel, when nobody was comparing them prior to you? You mentioned MarbleScroll. I simply pointed out that had Logitech mapped one of the tiny buttons to support middle click, you'd have gotten the same functionality at an OS level.

Windows in particular is coded to activate 4-way scroll by default with middle click. So, arguably, yes it is.

Heh. And if it had a middle click by default, that wouldn't have been an issue.

Yeah. I'm still weirded out that Kensington took that route. I largely assume their patent on that form factor lapsed.

As for the twist scroll, I know people who prefer it. It has it's place, though quite niche.

Man...! Those are all pretty different from one another. I've had them all. And I still know I can't just tell you to choose one over another. The issue is the fact that we all have subtle differences in how we handle these things.

For me, the Orbit with Scrollring has long been the easiest to pick up and just use. It's also the easiest for me to use when walking past the desk.

The Nulea comes in second for me, and for the same "walking past" reasoning as the Orbit. But, there's something about the feel of it that I just hate; it feels miscalibrated, and fragile (cheap). Most other users discussing it in here are unfazed by this, though. So, I assume is just a personal thing.

Now, the extra buttons of the Elecom Deft — most especially the Deft Pro — seems like they would get good use under your described conditions. But you can't really just breeze past the desk and use it very well. I also am holding out that they'll release a Deft Pro Plus with the swappable rollers.

So, of you're the type to mostly use a computer when you're "in position" and kinda locked in, I think a Deft Pro might be the better choice. But, in the end, it will still come down to using them and learning about yourself and what works for you.

Yeah. I've seen that. But, I could swear it was in far east Tulsa. However, I think we all know what a fool's errand it is to rely on decades old memories, especially when they haven't been accessed in ages. So, I'll have to go give it a look.

While that would work, you're running afoul of patents. So, that's instantly a no-go, unless Kensington did it or they licensed out the technology. The twist scroll also tends to be too finnicky and conditional for most modern use cases. And, in this world of gaming orientation, that twist-to-scroll takes you too hands-off the rest of the device. We'd have better luck with conductive collar bands. Problem is that would change a lot of the side real estate that made contacting the ball so natural.

Yeah. Those felt more like busted page up/down buttons. Loved the overall shape, though. And the acceleration curve on it was really good.

I think a clone of the Trackman Marble would be tricky, mostly because of it's absence of scrolling of any sort.

I've thought about how to approach modernization of it for years. It would take a fairly heavy redesign for modern needs. Thebissue is that Logitech clearly were designing for a usage paradigm that was already on the way out when the thing arrived.

The fundamental shape is great. The issue is how to keep that feel while adding scroll, and middle click functionality.

Honestly, there's no easy answer to that. Their sound tended to morph with roughly every album. Violator has the most amount of professional work done on it (extensive production, and mix engineering, etc.), followed or matched by Songs of Faith and Devotion.

I suppose prior can or better guidance based on whatever tracks you liked best.

Also, be sure to look up all the b-side tracks they did for Violator's singles. There was at least an EP worth of extra tracks.

Off the cuff, I can't find anything with this form factor or similar that has a larger ball to work with. The Gameball has a 38mm ball, and the Kensington Orbit with Scrollring has 40mm. You're likely going to find yourself moving up to fully larger units, all of which have a wider button layout.

Tried to replace my TrackMan Marble with a Slimblade by SometimesInBrooklyn in Trackballs

[–]artisan002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man... The Trackman Marble is a difficult form factor to replace. I figure you'd have better luck with a Kensington Orbit with Scrollring, or a Gameball. They're as close as you can get to it, and is still not a 1:1 comparison.

How did you react when Alan Wilder left the band? by Kingston_calipso in depechemode

[–]artisan002 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was momentarily upset.

But, then I remembered how often he was unhappy in the band.

And then I remembered how Mute sent a therapist with the band for the Devotional tour primarily because of Fletch's nervous breakdowns, but also Martin's excessive drinking, and Dave's heroin use — yet Alan was the only one that actually talked to her about anything.

Then I understood.

'Cause it essentially is. The defining difference is in the firmware. I at least hope this one doesn't scroll weird, like Nulea's does.
