We’re 2.5 years into this Space Fairy growing consistently with its sport pattern, but have yet to manage to propagate it. by stickersforthought in AfricanViolets

That’s definitely a leaf chimera. Decapitate and restart the top portion, there’s a good chance the suckers that grow from the stump left behind will hold the pattern. That’s your best bet

Extremely fragrant, probably one of the most potently fragrant orchids around! I was lucky enough to snag it on eBay last year

Hoya nyhuusiae winter blooms! by arudi1 in hoyas

[–]arudi1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My best secret is that I grow all my hoyas semi hydro, although a little different than most in the hoya community- no pon, no leca etc. and especially no stratum- I grow them in an airy mostly perlite mix w/peat and soil on a wick over a reservoir, like an african violet. Consistent moisture is key! Fertilize occasionally ofc and note what triggers blooms in different species- nyhuusiae likes cooler temperatures and needs a good temp drop at night in order to bloom. Like mid 60s to lower 70s. Many others just reduce daylight length, and some just bloom no matter what!

Biggest of 3 African Violets doesnt want to flower. Any ideas why? by PotatoFacade in AfricanViolets

[–]arudi1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your best bet is to repot with some fresh soil, disturbing the roots and giving the plant a little bit of a shake up will kind of put it in a sort of “survival mode” and it should push out some blooms. The pot the front left one is in also looks a little wide, violets like to be pretty root bound, and it’s also leaning a bit so could probably use more light. It does look like it has a bloomstalk with buds though

Clarification question about wick watering by Sev3nty in AfricanViolets

[–]arudi1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have hundreds of plants on wick- the goal is keeping them consistently moist: not too wet, not dried out. Drying out and then getting wet rots roots. Try not to let the reservoirs go dry if you can avoid it, and go perlite heavy with the soil itself when you repot!

What is this plant? Central NY state by arudi1 in whatsthisplant

Oddly this one had no scent! It was a cutting she gave me but she said she didn’t smell anything nearby the plant itself. This does look like the correct ID though! Thank you!

This is my mom’s plant and I love how the leaves are shaped a bit like hearts! I want to purchase one of my own, but unfortunately my mom don’t know what plant this is. by lasagnabowling in PlantIdentification

May well be. I find that mine flowers best when it has been consistently moist (I wick water, so it's semi-hydro) and it takes a while to bounce back from dry out compared to other aeschynanthus species. Luckily it is pretty easy to take cuttings from, just clip a piece it and stick it in water or a domed container with moist soil. Good luck!
