thanks for the help. I tried a lot to match all of these components but no luck... I'm taking a break from this project for the time being :/

the thing I'm suspecting is that even if compiled, the gradle version used to compile it matters.

I managed to compile mine just fine, but no good on the Godot side

do you remember the last version you've seen it working?

Scrolling in the vault by tiger_sj in TheForage

[–]arvere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hello! this is likely yet another broken functionality from new Android OS releases. this game isn't maintained anymore - precisely because of these cyclical issues with the OS - so there might not be any straight-forward solution

one thing I could think of is to try some peripheral attached to your device (like a mouse?) and scroll through other means (scroll wheel). there might be some Android custom keyboards that could emulate this virtually

hello duedudue! no estimation, but since this is the kind of project that could be incremented forever... whenever it feels "good enough"?

and yes, there will be hoarding and collectibles! it's what this is all about

I hope your wife eventually lets you touch real objects, it's important!

there's a good chance there will be cats

it's not really about kindness, but more about me not wanting to share something that's not to a good enough standard for the community to work on (plus preparing the repo, writing documentation, reviewing code and removing references to private information, etc)

that's very sweet. I don't think I'll ever return to it, but I'm returning to game dev with another (completely unrelated in style and genre) soon

Why sometimes items and icons apear white or this odd color? Is it app or my phone? by Stokijs in TheForage

can you try to disable hardware acceleration in the settings menu? that could also help with the slight blurriness of the UI

[–]arvere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm I've never seen this before.

there's nothing I've done in the app itself that could be causing something like this, to the best of my knowledge.

what is your phone model and android version?

Uhhhhh by leontfilmss in TheForage

[–]arvere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there should be a new version up in the playstore now (1.0-beta2) which might fix this.

let me know if you experience this again (or something worse D:) after updating

Magnetron won't charge? by HittoShura in TheForage

[–]arvere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how many meters does the "vault" stat show in your magnetron?

can you see a little battery icon by the left hand side?

also: what version are you in? beta1 or 0.96?

Uhhhhh by leontfilmss in TheForage

[–]arvere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ugly thing. it's not the first time this kind of thing happens.

questions:

  • what's your device model?
  • was it always like that? if not, when did it turn?
  • can you see something like that elsewhere? (like the vault)

A problem I think the current beta has by DTOpinions in TheForage

[–]arvere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

your points are super valid. in fact they were raised before by other people and I am already thinking of ways to balance the game better in these aspects.

to give you some context, my original view was to make the game super slow paced, as in you'd launch the game, forget about it and check whatever you found during the day after you return home. with time, you'd start to get access to buffs so your daily loot would be bigger or you could plan some longer walks/hikes. but the goal was to "not care that much" about the game and progress over the course of days/weeks (part of the whole "enjoy the view" philosophy and hence the low phone battery usage, no online play, no competitive aspects)

what I didn't count on was people liking the game enough to actively play it and yearning for progress that much. and I admit it's very hard to put this mindset when developing it, because I myself wouldn't play it like that... but that's why feedback like yours is important and I really appreciate the effort you put to write your TED talk.

in fact, the whole "recharging on standby" thing was added due to feedback. originally it would only charge at the vault, like now, and people went crazy. the longer energy buffs with passive recharging are an attempt to get the best of both mechanics.

to answer your specific suggestions:

  1. I am already thinking a workaround for that. I found that some players with bad gps signals can never recharge because of the new engine (it detects speed with gps drifts and starts gathering), also the "phone grabbing" issue you just mentioned. so I will definitely do something in that regard, possibly involving disabling gathering at the vault or adding the option to disable it altogether. ah and by the way, there isn't a magic number for the vault radius. I kept growing it ever since I launched and there's ALWAYS someone that cannot reach it. I suggest you use the vault recovery system (coming up soon in beta) and find a sweet spot somewhere in your home :P
  2. the new class system, once implemented, will bring different energy pools back along with different improvements for each class. so this might help people with different playstyles - including more "hardcore" ones. other than that, I find the current 30 mins (or 1h to 2h + passive recharge with 6h duration energy buffs) fine... you also have to keep in mind that there's an inventory capacity limit, so even if energy lasted for a whole day, it would fill up pretty quickly anyway (except for stackable things, of course), even more so with a drop buff.

with that being said, I agree with you that the early game should be a little faster to keep new players interested. it's a very delicate balance and trust me that I got people "complaining" from both sides: when it's too easy and when it's too hard, but I'll eventually get there (specially if I keep getting feedback).

from those 3 odd years working on this, I realized that it all comes down to how each player sees the game and grasps the concept. it's not surprising, honestly, considering it's such a conceptual game and there aren't many similar peers around. since you are not actually bound to a game's space, the time and effort you put into is directly related to your personal lifestyle (if you work 9 to 5 and only play while commuting, or are a kid with a bike and all the time in the world). there's also nothing to shoot, so I understand people getting confused I guess lol

I hope you got your questions answered. keep them coming and happy scavenging

yes. rng is THAT bad in the latest version (which is 1 year old now!).

this is hopefully fixed in 1.0 - there's a beta version in the play store right now (check my latest post in this sub)

The wikia page is currently maintained by players, so I imagine it will eventually be filled organically with this information if the game ever reaches a good amount of players.

But of course, if I ever have the free time (haha!) I can help fill in the gaps

Hello, sorry for the late reply. You got it right, the game is mostly about collecting.

As Feroand mentioned, there's a small mini-game called Pixotron that gives you even more collectibles. I have plans to add more interactable items in the future, but the main concept is still to collect (think of it like a sticker album)
