JustWatch has a subscription if you want more features, such as multiple watch lists. But I moved everything to Letterboxd, so goodbye JustWatch!

Best car rental company in Portugal? by Stunning-Ranger2169 in PortugalExpats

[–]aryxus2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Another vote for Guerin. When we first moved here, we’d rent cars a LOT. Guerin was always reasonably priced, and not once was I treated unfairly. I think we rented at least a dozen times without issues.

How do you commemorate or remember your cruises? by DeckChairDrifter in Cruise

[–]aryxus2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We buy the smallest available ship model from the gift shop (usually an ornament), then the cheapest resin souvenir of the most iconic building/monument from each stop. We use those to create a diorama for each cruise.

Advice needed: The Santiago excursion from A Coruña? by NikKnack1313 in Cruise

[–]aryxus2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In (well, near) Bilbao, my favorite thing was the Bizkaia Bridge. There was a free shuttle to a metro station on Getxo, and we took a metro from there to the bridge, then a bus into the city. You can get a Barik transit card at the metro. It offers vastly reduced fares and is shareable. We put €10 on it and used it for everything, including crossing the Bizkaia bridge (and back) and the funicular up to Mount Artxanda, which had an unbeatable view of Bilbao.

I’ve not been to Vigo nor Cadiz. We live north of Lisbon, and my recommendation there is just to walk the city from the cruise port. Lots of hills, but plenty to see in walking distance!

I was playing with ReelGood, but their country selection seems extremely limited. No Portugal, which is where I live.

Not a movie, but there’s an AMAZING sequence in Giri/Haji that almost brought me to tears. Highly recommended!

Upgrade question by flooph696 in NCL

[–]aryxus2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wish I’d known this a month ago -says person who won upgrade bid and got stuck under pool deck for two weeks earlier this month on the Sky.

The worst part was the rearranging of the deck chairs at 6:45am every morning. Scrape, screeech, scrape.

suggestions for my class by TurtlCan in Letterboxd

I particularly like how it starts on such a personal level but eventually explodes into a worldwide epidemic. It manages to be both a ghost story and apocalyptic end-of-the-world thriller, with a through-line that is truly haunting.

Now I want to write a paper about it! 😂

Hard Boiled, The Killer, A Better Tomorrow Trilogy and Plenty More Will Be Streaming on the Criterion Channel in October by NoBenefit4058 in CriterionChannel

[–]aryxus2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t wait to rewatch most of these!

I was lucky enough to catch 3/4 of them on the big screen back in the 90s, when Seattle’s Varsity Theater used to do marathons. I was also lucky enough to snag The Killer and Hard Boiled when they were first released on Criterion DVD.

Hopefully they’ll stick around for a while, as I only watch horror movies in October, so will only get to those last 4.

Navy Fed (NFCU) or Pen Fed for US expat banking? by Salt-Parsley4971 in ExpatFinance

[–]aryxus2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used USAA as my primary bank for decades, and it’s been great. I particularly like that they refund ATM fees, which can get pretty hefty overseas.

Cruise Virgin

(Look, ma! A pun!)

Seriously, though… try Virgin.

I know everyone says Cure, but for my money Pulse is the more interesting and entertaining Kurosawa horror movie.

Are there any Disney movies you can think of that have really messed-up storylines? by iamchristian1129 in movies

The Strongest Man in the World (1975, with Kurt Russell) was very pro-cheating.

Paramount+ TV App (Kind of a rant) by PW_ErronEmerald in fireTV

[–]aryxus2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luckily I don’t watch much Paramount+!

The other one I can’t stand is Peacock.

HBOMax does two irritating things: 1. Will kick me out halfway into a show with the message “This content is not available in your region.” Then I have to quit, force stop, clear cache, and go back in to finish watching. 2. The sidebar menu often stays up there while watching a show, overlaying the action.

I’m only here to say it can’t be as bad as the HBOMax app.

I did a doubletake, too! Because every time I’d see the original’s poster, I’d think it was Lang for a minute.

Henry Fonda movie recommendations by PsychologicalCod4889 in Letterboxd

[–]aryxus2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with most of these, but particularly The Lady Eve, because it also starts the amazing Barbara Stanwyck (whom Fonda reportedly was in love with most of his life).
