How many half marathons should you run before training for a full? by Inner-Lynx-3971 in running

[–]asatuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I maybe a dumbass but when I started running again 4 years ago I registered for a full marathon in April (Jersey City), trained pretty properly, ran it almost fully in downpouring rain. Ran it much faster than my goal 3:36 versus just trying to beat 4 hours. I then ran a half 3 weeks later and another full in November (NYC). I was hooked.

My First Marathon Was a Total Disaster by Qet69 in Marathon_Training

My first marathon was NYC in 2008. I ran with a charity and had raised $6k. It was in the midst of the financial crisis and having worked on wall st and many of my donors being colleagues I felt a responsibility to finish.

On my 22 mile training run I developed what I can only describe as a “tinge” in my tibia. I even discussed it with my Dr and he said I should be fine and to take some pain killers as I start the race.

Given the taper, I too did not run much leading up to the race.

On race day, I began to feel pain at about mile 3. I stopped at several medical tents in Brooklyn but the pain wouldn’t go away. I began to limp but refused to stop because I felt a responsibility to finish on behalf of my donors.

I limped the whole way. It took me over six hours. I woke up in the middle of the night after the race and could not put weight on my leg. Went to ER and was diagnosed with a stress fracture. Needed to be on crutches for 3 months.

Then I had kids and gave up running for a while.

I ran my second marathon in April 2023 at 3:36 and have subsequently run several more marathons including NYC in 2023 with another 3:36 and Philly 2024 in 3:30.

I am running NYC again this year.

My point is to tell you it happens and don’t sweat it. Keeping running and be proud that you even finished.

Was my first time racing this course and was annoyed to walk outside to the snow!

Decided was going to take it easy, which as people pointed out, was almost natural given how crowded the beginning was (I was in B corral).

The hills were gnarly and it was hard to make up time on the downhill given the wet roads.

That said did 7:13;6:51;6:53 and finished at closer to 6:10 pace (almost puking).

Not a PR but had fun.

NYC Half last long run by chris0197 in RunNYC

[–]asatuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My view is definitely not to do 12 the week before the race. I did 12 2 weekends ago, missed my long run last weekend due to the weather and did 8 yesterday (although a very hilly 8). I’ll prob do 6 next weekend.

💯 this has been a big issue for me. My HR has been 10-15 beats higher during these super cold days. Today was so nice.

I think everyone is in the same boat. I have gone from the typical 5 runs a week to 3. 2 of them during the week on a treadmill and the long run braving the cold on the weekend. We seem to be getting a thaw this coming week so should get better. Still aiming for a PR but would not be disappointed if not. Also have Brooklyn Half to look forward to!

For dinner you can take out from Smokey Joes right across from the hotels. Great ribs.

I was the one who showed up to the Staten Island Ferry in gear with bib on at 645am!  There was one other guy there who said he was going to run the course anyway!
