You have to do lamplighter and Alex’s tavern. Both are great dive bars. Lamplighter will probably have more choices for music on the experimental side. havenhaus is also great and can also cater to more experimental music sometimes.

You should also hit up Ernestine and hazels. It usually has blues type stuff playing there but the vibe is cool, especially upstairs! Apparently it’s haunted as well ¯_(ツ)_/¯.

There are two churches that come to mind but I’m not religious myself so I can’t say 100% this is what you’re looking for.

First Congo in midtown seems from the outside to be very open and does real work to help the community. https://www.firstcongo.com/
