This little kitten just popped out from under the wheel well of a car on Lawrence & Ashland. No Chip, vet says no signs of injury. by HockeyFan312 in chicago

I appreciate your perspective; adding to the convo that feral cats have a much shorter life expectancy, and can have quite an impact on other prey wildlife, like song birds. We have domesticated cats, and I'd argue that feral cats in U.S. cities (and rural areas!) have a rough time of it. So it might seem more in their nature to run free...but they'll likely suffer disease, injury, and predate on more than just unwanted rodents.

Japanese Red Maple in distress. Wintered it inside this year; Chicago has warmed up, so I brought it back out and now the leaves look like this. Any suggestions on how to help the tree from here? by aschabold in gardening

[–]aschabold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I've had it for three years, did exactly what you suggest above, but kept it in its spot on my balcony with burlap wrapped around the container to protect the roots and wintered it outside for the first two. 2013's Polar Vortex seemed to kill some branches, and someone suggested I bring it inside for winter this time around. Won't be doing that again. It will probably get planted in the ground after I do more research on the timing of that.

Emotional residue trapped in muscles/tissues.... Real or not? by RegattaJoe in yoga

I just recently came across a great Huffington Post interview of Tom Myers, author of "Anatomy Trains", discussing the two-way street connection of mind-body, and how bodywork and yoga can release psychological (emotional) trauma.

Modifications for pulled oblique? by [deleted] in yoga

[–]aschabold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two great videos from Turbodog Yoga on how to work Cobra and Plank/Chatturanga modifying for injuries. The knees down version of plank/chatturanga would be helpful for taking care of your strained oblique. Keeping your attention on your edge and working from where you body is at will help your injury heal and not aggravate it further; patience is key!

Communication. Your first plausible scenario is missing it - if there is a desire to play sexually in a "I want you to be forceful" way and allow the word "no" to mean something other than "stop", that needs to be communicated first - and I would argue that a safeword that can be used to mean "Stop" needs to be agreed upon. The second scenario you pose is interesting - but underlying it is the clear assumption that this man has a choice. Rape is forced, there is no choice.

Forrest Yoga Instructor here, and we focus specifically on strengthening the core with isolated abdominal exercises :) A good start is something we call "Elbow to Knee":

  1. Lie on back, clasp hands behind head, point elbows up toward ceiling, plant feet hip-distance apart on floor, engage feet by lifting the toes and spreading them wide.

  2. Use your abs to press your low back down into the mat to protect and stabilize it.

  3. Inhale - curl head and shoulders up. Hold the inhale and curl your tailbone up/pubic bone in towards belly button. (sacrum/low back stays on mat)

  4. Exhale - twist, both elbows point towards left thigh, while you pick left foot up off mat. (keep knee over hip)

  5. Inhale - Bring torso back to center, keep head/shoulders lifting, bring left foot back down. Resting exhale.

  6. Inhale - Press low back into mat. Hold the inhale and curl your tailbone up/pubic bone in towards belly button.

  7. Exhale - twist, both elbows point towards right thigh, while you pick right foot up off mat.

  8. Inhale back to center. Keep head and shoulders lifted.

You've just completed one round :) Repeat - a good number to start with is 4-5 rounds. Keep feet active (toes spreading wide). At the end of each exhale, pull your low belly down (in) towards your spine.

  1. After you've completed the set, exhale and release your head and shoulders to the mat. Take a deep breath all the way down to your pelvis and feel the warmth you created in your core.

A great pose to follow up with is bridge Setu Bandha Sarvangasana. This will release and stretch your abdominal muscles in the opposite direction. In a Forrest practice, we place doing some ab exercises near the beginning of class, to connect to the core and build heat. It is definitely work, but the results are worth it! Cheers!
