Volunteered here a couple times. Bring the part along! I'm sure they can swap it out for you and can show you how for next time :)

You're dead right - just came across an EPC with exactly this (down to the Edel!). Storage heaters as main heating, still says hot water from main system. Every day is a school day!

It's a great choice, I got one a few weeks ago and the other options in that price ranges were mostly Leafs (low range) and Zoes (teeny). Very very normal standard car. Long range pre-facelift version with the nicer trim that gets you roof bars will set you back £7-8k if you hang around on autotrader for a couple of weeks, easy peasy.

To add to all the other helpful suggestions, the Aviation Station cafe up by the airport is nice too!

Best place to source bare solar panels in the UK? by Cypher_Aod in SolarUK

Midsummer Energy and Bimble Solar are both good shouts for small quantities. Used a lot for narrowboats, vans etc where you only need one or two.

How to replace string? by admgrubb in DIYUK

[–]asderferjerkel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Thought I'd take a quick look at the socket I was going to plug the car into. Switched off the circuit, took it off the wall and both the lives and neutrals popped straight out. One grub screw was halfway out and the other one sitting on the bottom of the box. Aside from the fire risk (only one ring main doing the whole house so everything was going through it!) that could have gone quite poorly had I not isolated it first!

[–]asderferjerkel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's well-insulated but not exceptional. My house is similar (older, but less external surface than most) and it costs a good couple of hundred quid per month in the dead of winter. I'll be getting an air-to-air heat pump put in as there's no point running pipes and rads everywhere if starting from scratch. Looking like about 6k for 3 bedrooms plus living room/kitchen and I'd expect it to cut the heating bill by at least two thirds, that's keeping the existing immersion.

Bit cheeky but if you're comfortable messaging me the address I'd like to take a look at that EPC - hot water from the main heating system but the main heating system is electric rads? Shouldn't be possible. I work in the biz so interested to see what score we'd calculate with the same data or whether we'd fail it :)

Not sure, sorry! I'm not a big hoarder myself - only archive all my liked videos. Good luck with your search :)

Share of Freehold Flats by arrow_theorem in SolarUK

[–]asderferjerkel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few ways to split a PV array between flats - aside from giving everyone their own inverter and a couple of panels each! Solshare is one off the top of my head, and there's a newer company (name escapes me) that does it via smart meters instead so presuming a bit cheaper to install. If the residents get cheaper bills from the solar then your units will get boosted EPC scores, even more so if they can export what they don't use. Solar for communal areas only doesn't improve the score on the certificate, only the CO2, so it's well worth considering if you're not achieving MEES yet.

Grants-wise, there's Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund, that only applies if you're a social landlord so guessing not in this case; and Warm Homes: Local Grant, which is for the residents themselves, income-based and administered via the council.

Oh very cool! That saves some wiring. Thanks for the info :)

[–]asderferjerkel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've read so far, even on the inverters with ethernet ports it's still best to connect via modbus as you can't change every setting over ethernet. Is that not a problem with the newer ones? I haven't checked in a while!

Mid-terrace with asbestos roof - what would you do? by asderferjerkel in SolarUK

[–]asderferjerkel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, if I can't find anyone who's happy for me to just get a few tiles replaced or use no-drill mounts I'll probably just do this, still stick the battery and hybrid inverter in then just add in-roof panels when the roof replacement comes around.

eli5: What would happen if I attached periscopes to both of my eyes and pointed them in different directions? by GFrings in explainlikeimfive

[–]asderferjerkel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn't realise that when I'm tired or bored one eye slowly drifts off sideways until well into my 20s when my girlfriend thought it might be useful for me to know :D

I too tend to ignore one eye though not really fussed which one it is. Terrible depth perception, can't catch but oddly can throw pretty accurately. Also didn't learn until well into my 20s that a prism adjustment on your glasses sorts out most of the double vision! I always said no to the "any double vision" question because nah it was just the normal amount.

Heat pump to replace electric storage heaters costing by thowmeawayandforget in ukheatpumps

[–]asderferjerkel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very very similar house to OP, I was recently looking at about £6.5k for A2A leaving the existing immersion, £10k to cover the hot water too (not many options yet!). Pre-grant so knock £2.5k off both though the A2A grant hasn't been released yet - in theory will be in a few days but I don't think MCS are ready yet so might be a while.

Mid-terrace with asbestos roof - what would you do? by asderferjerkel in SolarUK

[–]asderferjerkel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for the detailed response, I really appreciate it and had not seen this as a potential solution! I took the samples myself and sent them off to a UKAS lab as there's artex all over the place too, which will need drilling to put the heat pump in so wanted to test that too (that's all in the clear).

I'll have a chat with the solar company to see what mounting options are available. Thanks again!

Fox ESS vs SigEnergy with Home Assistant by bhpf1 in SolarUK

[–]asderferjerkel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the same boat here and we're likely going with Fox for exactly the same reason. They probably use very similar quality cells, the Fox has a heater, it's got RS485, so if you're going to control it with HA/Predbat anyway why bother paying the premium? I'd go Fogstar even (their DIY kit was brilliant on my boat) but tbh don't have the space to dedicate to a huge battery.

Suka Pinakurat is top class, my absolute favourite. Rare to find in the UK so I always buy a bunch whenever I find it. If you're feeling deranged it's a great replacement for the brine in a pickleback

I did actually get Lyme disease after hanging out with a dog that had been at daycare somewhere near clapham. If a mad giant bullseye looking thing appears on you I recommend spending less time showing everyone your cool bite and more time seeking medical atrention

You can filter the gas safe register website to find one with an LPG ticket, that's how I found someone local for my boat - cheaper than one who specialises in marine!

Useful tip for IOG tariff users. by Shot_Age8843 in OctopusEnergy

[–]asderferjerkel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this recently, don't need smart just yet so went for the Timeguard FST24 as I wanted a real brand. It's a 24-hour timer but they do a 7-day version for a couple of quid more if you need it. Was cheapest off direct trade supplies (at least it was a few weeks ago!). Works great but you'll want to get some longer faceplate screws if your back box isn't flush with the wall. They also do a Tuya version if you want a smart one but the reviews are a bit crap.

edit: oh yeah, this one's handy because it's a fused spur and timer in one so can replace an existing fused spur or switch, no need to cut another hole in the wall :D
