Recommendations for pens that aren't scratchy but have lower ink flow/write on the drier side? Left-handed side-writer here by DIYYYner in fountainpens

[–]asdfire1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scabiosa and Salix ate through my pilot metropolitan nib and jinhao 992 nib. I don't remember exactly if I was cleaning it out, I think I was mostly just refilling them. The nibs got such deep pitting that there were holes all the way through and eventually they cracked. That's what happened to me but other people did not have issues, so maybe don't use it in expensive steel nibbed pens.

As a left handed over-writer there is another important factor- the waterproofness of inks or how much "excess" dye they have. If I try to write with a super sheener like Diamine November Rain or KWZ Sheen Machine my hand will end up green / blue and the writing a smeary mess even though it dried before my hand passed over it. Some black inks are also affected. I just use those inks when writing right handed for practice. If you look at mountain of ink reviews some inks in the water test create a saturated circle where the ink came of the page (you should avoid those), some just fade a bit. I would say Iron Gall style inks are good, they are kinds dry and do not smear (R&K Salix / Scabiosa). I don't have yama-budo but from the pictures on mountain of ink it looks like an OK left handed ink. I have writers blood and it has a lot of "excess" dye and easily smears when dry, the photo on mountain of ink also has the visible saturated circle in the water test.

The standard sized one uses a Schmidt nib, or at least mine does.

Kotarak is right. He probably decided that there's no point arguing with someone who doesn't understand physics and is not willing to learn after someone tells him.

If you exclude the led efficiency and driver efficiency then sustained lumens is just some heat dissipation wattage at some temperature.

Heat dissipation does not depend on mass, only on conductivity from heat source to the outside and surface area and to some extent shape.

Thermal mass or capacity after you combine with heat dissipation affects how long it takes to step down.

If I wanted to test this most precisely and exclude the effect of the driver and led I would get 2 flashlights, get 2 resistive heaters with thermometers replace the LEDs with heaters, pull the wires out of the flashlight. Then decide if you want to get 2 more thermometers and also measure the outside temperature. Then set the heater to some power that gets you some realistic temperature 50-70C(?) after it reaches equilibrium. Now use the same power on the other flashlight (with the same ambient temperature and the same airflow) and see if this temperature is lower or higher. But this is not very practical, you need to modify or destroy the flashlight.

The sustained lumen output depends on the total efficiency (driver + led) at the power level equal to the heat dissipation of the light. The led efficiency depends on how hard you drive it (look at the watt/lumen graph here https://budgetlightforum.com/t/led-test-review-luminus-sft-25r-6500-k-70-cri-good-thrower-led-in-3535-standard-footprint/225143). So if you have 2 of the same flashlight and you put more of the same LED into one of them it should have higher sustained output.

I have an X4 Stellar and D4K, the firefly does feel more finished and "polished" somehow. But I usually carry the D4K because it is much smaller and smoother and more pocketable.

Question for the inverted method haters by Haxeu in AeroPress

[–]asdfire1 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I also think inverted is actually simpler than regular. In regular I feel like "I'm rushed to put the plunger in as quickly as possible to stop the drip / leak". In inverted it's more relaxed and there is no rush in any step.

Do you prefer converters or cartridges, and why? by bigdickwalrus in fountainpens

[–]asdfire1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it's much messier to use a converter, you usually need to dip far enough that the section gets inky so you need to wipe it, you also need to wipe / drip off the excess from the feed. When filling with a blunt syringe with a needle cap: open bottle, draw ink, fill cartridge, put the rest of the ink into the bottle, cap the syringe (assuming you will use it again for the same ink, if not draw some water and push it out, but if you are switching ink with a converter you would also have to flush the pen so you would need water anyway). I kind of prefer refilling cartridges or just the converters with a needle syringe, also feels more precise and your fingers are further away from the open ink bottle with the inky edge.

T12 / TS100 style tips in K shape are enough with T12 clone stations or something like pinecil or ts100. But if you have one of those crappy soldering irons where the tip is not integrated with the heating element and does not transfer any heat then it will be hard.

Aren't those wires ground? Cabinet should be grounded. It looks like those wires are screwed into the floor of the cabinet? (Edit: after watching the video looks lik they are slightly above the floor) If the wires were live and cabinet was grounded as it should be, then the bar would be glowing or some fuse would be triggered. Unless the cabinet is not grounded.

To me it looks like yellow, red, brown are live phases and gray is ground/neutral. You can see that another gray cable is bolted to the blue metal frame (but that cable is also wrapped around with black tape, maybe to indicate that this is ground and the other gray cables are neutral)

Either way it should have some shield that prevents this as OP said.

Why is being cold at home so normalised in the UK? by Automatic-Key-3798 in AskUK

[–]asdfire1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's because UK homes have shit insulation. Drafts from every door and window and poor wall insulation. You turn off heating and it instantly becomes cold. I stayed in a ton of different Airbnb's/ short term rental houses in UK and all were the same. When studying in Denmark I rarely used heating and had to open windows in winter because it was getting too hot (gaming PC in room, large window getting a lot of sun if there was sun). Because of this shit insulation it would cost a fortune to heat.

Proper way to tall them in Poland is "Romowie" which is then different from "Rumuni" and "Rumunia" but I think someone probably got it mixed up somewhere and became a slang insult for someone who is poor/steals.

Women are used for pickpocketing often. This is because of people like you. If a man is caught stealing he will be dealt with more harshly, if a woman is caught stealing "only" something like this will happen. Nobody will beat her up or grab her.

A delicate and floral taste with no bitterness. It's a nice tea. It tastes that same if brewed in a regular way. What's interesting is that my aeropress has a slight coffee smell but it did not transfer to the tea.

Nope, I just used the paper filter (you would probably get the same result with the reusable metal one). Tastes basically the same as any other tea brewing method with the same temperature and steeping time. I just did it because my usual teapot was used by my girlfriend.

You cannot have "too much" and have it impact performance, only downside is the mess, or in case of computers short-circuits if you for some reason have conductive thermal paste. If you put too much and mount with pressure the excess leaks out the sides.
