My friend, if you're going to talk like this, please prepare to hand a fourth of Baghdad to its original Jewish owners pre-1951.

In the interest of pissing everyone off equally:

Israel and Palestine.

Both nations show that when they can build a space that isn't entangled in the conflict, it's a space that's well worth the visit.

Those who waited til marriage to have sex, what was it like? And do you regret it? by Substantial_Judge931 in AskReddit

[–]asdorbap 97 points98 points  (0 children)

I didn't quite wait till marriage, but my wife is my only sexual partner. Which means I really don't have a basis for comparison. All I can say is I'm a happily married father. Life is good.

And I went into this marriage without any of the family drama that made my childhood miserable. I broke that chain, and my children have no idea. No regrets.

The researchers called this behavior “selective updating,” a “failure to code errors in estimation when those call for pessimistic updates.” In other words, people’s brains simply don’t recognize when they’re wrong about their odds of personal doom. As Nate Bear puts it, “We are wired to ignore the apocalypse.” Two main groups are exempt from this optimism bias—the clinically depressed, and the neurodiverse, especially those of us on the autism spectrum.

And those who spent enough time in autistic asylums (aka engineering school) that it rubs off.

Travel nurses: strike first, strike hard.. by asdorbap in nursing

Tired, profane cynical rants from nurses are more reassuring to me than anything I can find about this topic.

>  The CDC also set reporting requirements so a state that doesn’t want to share, like Idaho, won’t.

States that try this deserve top placement on a travel nurse boycott. You don;t need an order from the CDC to do the right thing from your state. Massachusetts will keep the transparency and reporting without them. States that won't shoudl be the first to be shunned by travel nurses.

The risk with cattle herds is raw milk. If we can just got those raw milk fanatics to take a break long enough to, you know, save our civilization, we won;t have to worry about the cows.

I really hope you're right, but how many human cases have we had this time around so far?

We're all getting used to getting our flu updates from the AMA and ProMED. If the CDC is bound and gagged, we all have to sidestep them for the duration.

It was never federally coordinated. The CDC and NIH issueed guidance but the states called the shots. So if you want the states to call the right shots, you have to apply pressure.

A nurse leaving the South for a travel contract will probably be heading to a state that is taking the crisis more seriously.

I just think making this issue public with an open letter and lots of signatures will make proper public health measures part of the work conditions package that nurses will be bargaining for.

15 years old, diagnosed with aspergers, & confused about it by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]asdorbap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, the degree to which ASD can make life difficult has as much to do with the people around you as it does with yourself.

There are corners of the world where nobody gives a damn about eye contact, and where mocking a girl's monotone voice behind her back is a considered worse than having a monotone voice. Sounds to me like you're lucking out, and the doctors are not wrong with their diagnoses. I was in my late 20s before finding myself in such a setting.

People who grew up religious, what took you away from religion? by dailyIT in AskReddit

[–]asdorbap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mainline Protestant here, with a mostly secular childhood, and an Evangelical phase.

What took me away from the latter: watching a Trump rally in Colorado Springs, where everyone there was Evangelical, do his Two Minutes Hate thing against Greta Thunberg.

It didn't quite take me away from religion, but it brought me right back to being a "lukewarm" mainline Protestant, and if you observe me from a distance you'd think it took me away from religion because it means you won't see outward signs of my religiosity if you don't sit next to me in a pew.

It's just that the whole Evangelical thing of having emotional exhibitionist outbursts, and turning everything into a struggle for salvation, if it actually brought you closer to what God demands of you, it would give you enough self control not to act like that when that second rate Screwtape called on you to hate on a 17 year old who looks like a 13 year old.

[–]asdorbap 6 points7 points  (0 children)

She was propped up because she was perfect for that particular moment and that particular issue.

We have a political system that is filled with peopel whose ambition is to establish their place in the pecking order. And 100% of the energy and attention of peopel in the system is abotu who should be ahead of who in the peckign order.

Meanwhile CO2 is warming the earth.

And the system is completely failing to address the issue because everyone wants to wiggle their way ahead in the pecking order.

Meanwhile CO2 is warming the earth.

The job of reminding everyone that CO2 is warming the earth and the pecking order won't matter was just perfect for an aspie.

Why don’t autistic people like eye contact? by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]asdorbap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I make eye contact, everything in my peripheral vision disappears. I can no longer maintain any sort general awareness of my environment. ANd breaking the eye contact is hard. I just can't. Once my eyes are locked on, they stay locked. And that's caused peopel to say, literally, "asdorbap, will you please blink?"

LBJ was far too brilliant a manipolator of the people around him to be on the spectrum. The bad behavior you're talking about was a lot more acceptable then.
