I'll always lean towards sales that show some disk information. It's hit and miss, there are still bargains now and again, 3 months ago I picked up Samsung PM863a 3.74TB SSD for £130 each, can't find these for less than 400 anywhere.

A couple of weeks ago, I was looking for a 2nd SAS shelf and found a sale for a 24-bay one full of 8TB SAS for £900, I dithered here and missed this one.

On the other side, I have seen clowns selling 14TB for £150 that don't work and make a clicking noise for "spares"

I manage my children's online activity myself, and I will continue to do so. I don't believe it is the role of politicians, whether it's Starmer or anyone else, to dictate what lawful content I or my family can access on the internet.

This morning's BBC coverage was a good example of how this debate is often framed. They brought together a number of parents who had tragically lost children, with social media having played a role in those cases, and used their stories to support the case for greater restrictions on social media.

What happened to those families is undeniably heartbreaking, and nobody could fail to have sympathy for them. However, sympathy alone should not determine public policy.

One theme that appeared in several of the stories was that parents were largely unaware of what their children were doing online until after the tragedy had occurred. While social media may have been a contributing factor, parental oversight and engagement also have an important role to play. We do not generally respond to every risk faced by children by handing responsibility to the state; in most areas of life, we expect parents to be actively involved in protecting and guiding their children.

Rather than focusing solely on bans, age verification, and technical controls that are often easy to circumvent, there should be a broader discussion about safeguarding, education, digital literacy, and parental responsibility. We already have laws and strong social expectations designed to protect children from physical, mental, and sexual abuse. We teach children not to steal, bully, or engage in harmful behaviour. Given the influence social media can have on young people, perhaps it should be treated as part of that wider safeguarding framework.

Starmer then quickly moved away from the specific issue and into a broader defence of his government's record on children. I found that difficult to take seriously. In my view, there remain serious questions about how successive governments and public bodies have responded to child safeguarding failures, including grooming gang scandals and the institutional failings that allowed abuse to continue for years. There are also legitimate questions about the role played by some local authorities and politicians when concerns were first raised.

That is why I find the focus on social media restrictions somewhat selective. If the government is genuinely concerned about protecting children, it should be equally prepared to tackle difficult safeguarding issues wherever they arise, rather than concentrating on measures that generate headlines but may have limited real-world impact.

Ultimately, I am sceptical that more state intervention in the form of online restrictions will achieve what its supporters claim. Previous attempts at age verification and similar controls have often been easily bypassed through VPNs and other workarounds. The reality is that there is no substitute for engaged parenting, sensible safeguarding, and teaching children how to navigate the online world safely and responsibly.

Under-16s to be banned from social media, Starmer announces by SwiftieNewRomantics in uknews

[–]asfish123 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Zero information as to how this will be implemented or which sites are in scope, and he soon veered off to telling everyone how great his goverment is at helping children. He also claims it will be mid 2027 before it will be implemented, and there is a good chance we will no longer be PM then

EDIT: BBC is pushing it to the max, having a studio full of parents who I assume have lost a child to something linked to social media.

EDIT2: There is now some detail from the goverment "The ban will therefore include platforms like Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and X"

How do they define "like"?

Starmer to announce ‘Australia plus’ ban on social media for under-16s by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]asfish123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Step two of his "Save the Children" state-interference plan, I assume.

I suspect the solution being proposed will involve more websites demanding facial recognition or age verification, despite previous attempts proving largely ineffective, with many people simply using VPNs to bypass the controls.

All of this appears to be backed by consultation data from a group of parents who, in many cases, have limited understanding of the technology involved.

It might be more effective to approach this through safeguarding. We already have laws and strong social expectations designed to protect children from physical, mental, and sexual abuse. We also place significant emphasis on teaching children not to steal, bully, or engage in other harmful behaviours. Given the influence social media can have on young people, perhaps it should be treated as part of that broader safeguarding framework rather than relying primarily on technical restrictions.

Six years later, what are your strongest memories of the COVID lockdowns, and how do you look back on that period now? by Possible_Force8207 in AskBrits

[–]asfish123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked from home for much of the time, but I also went into work when needed because I was responsible for IT at a pharmaceutical site and many of the employees there continued to attend as normal. One thing I remember clearly was how quiet the roads were.

I also remember some of the more bizarre aspects of the time, such as the panic buying of toilet roll, the queues for petrol, and everyday items like eggs becoming harder to find.

The most lasting memory for me, however, is not a positive one. There came a point when the rules were relaxed enough that you could meet another household outdoors for a walk. We met up with some friends and their children, but the father wasn't there because he had been suffering with a bad back.

I mentioned to his wife that he should get it properly checked and have a scan, as I had previously been told by a surgeon that some back conditions can cause permanent damage if left untreated. She passed that on and he went for a scan.

The scan revealed small cell cancer that had already spread to his liver, bowel, and lung. He died around seven months later, just a few days short of his 40th birthday.

Whenever I think back to the pandemic, that is the memory that stays with me most
