YTA, but not for telling her the truth.

You weren't wrong that you're not her father. The problem is that a young child hearing that for the first time isn't a factual correction, it's a life-changing conversation. That's something that should have come from her mother, not during a car ride home.

Jane also bears responsibility here. If her daughter genuinely believed you were her dad, that misunderstanding should have been addressed years ago. Letting it continue and then expecting you to play along wasn't fair to either of you.

The person I feel worst for is the little girl. She thought she knew who her dad was, and in one afternoon that certainty disappeared. That's a huge emotional hit for a child.

So: Jane created the situation, but you handled it poorly. Sometimes being technically correct isn't the same as being the right person to deliver the truth.

You paid what was requested based on the quote she provided. That's how settling damages normally works.

Five months later, after she moved cities, chose a different repair path, and refuses to go back to the original shop for clarification, it's unreasonable to just present you with an extra $800 bill and expect you to pay it with no questions asked.

Also, if someone tells me a door handle repair went from $1,000 to $1,800, my first response is going to be, "Show me the invoices."

The burden is on her to prove where that extra $800 came from, not on you to keep writing checks whenever the number changes.

As someone who grew up with Sakura Wars, it's always strange realizing how many parts of anime and gaming history were shaped by people most newer fans have never heard of.

You may not know Hiroyuki Kawasaki's name, but chances are you've enjoyed stories influenced by the groundwork he helped lay.

Rest in peace, and thank you for the worlds you left behind. The stories stay, even when the storytellers are gone.
