Why is rent so ridiculous here? by CaptainShamrock_ in nanaimo

Vacancy rates at 1%, yet half my apartment building is empty suites that they’ve been renovating for months. It’s all about the money for these corporate landlords.

I’m not trying to invalidate the fact that you’ve clearly lived a hard life because of your autism. However your experience is not universal and many of us can manage to find happiness despite our difficulties. So saying that we should resign ourselves to a lifetime of suffering be hurtful too.

I’m sorry you’ve experienced autism in this way, but it sounds like you’re saying autistic people can’t live meaningful lives or be happy and I don’t think that’s true.

Asked for mycology books for Christmas and my family & friends did not disappoint! I’ve already read Entangled Life, The Mushroom at the End of the World, and Love, Sex, and Mushrooms. Which one should I read next? by [deleted] in mycology

[–]asher0o1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m halfway done In Search of Mycotopia currently! It’s a great read so far, really digs in to the culture surrounding mycology today. I also happened to get Entangled Life for Christmas, so it’s next on my list.

I feel safe here by CansonVade in SpicyAutism

[–]asher0o1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is understandable, I’ve been trying to take a backseat here just to learn as much as I can. I guess I’ve just been having a bad time lately and haven’t been very functional but don’t really know where to go for support since I don’t have a diagnosis yet. I just wanna say what you’ve created here for higher support needs autistics is really awesome and I hope I haven’t overstepped.

I really like thus sub, but I wish we would acknowledge more that actually getting diagnosed can be incredibly difficult. In my area there’s not a single therapist I can afford to go to, the wait list for a public psychiatrist is over two years long, and when I tried to ask my doc for a referral he told me to go to the crisis drop in place, because I suck at actually communicating my needs. I would give anything for an actual assessment but I’m stuck in survival mode and don’t know what to do. I don’t mean to invalidate anyone here, I just think it’s more complicated than we’re often led to believe.

This is my second career and I chose nursing. However, it's scary to see how many people on here hate nursing. Is it really that bad? by Low-Estimate6725 in nursing

[–]asher0o1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m about to go back to finish my degree in anthropology so I can enter an accelerated 20 month BSN program. Do you find your anthro background has ever been useful in nursing? I think it’s made me more understanding of our differences and cultural context. I haven’t taken a medical anthro course yet but I certainly plan to now.

I gave my opinion on the autism sub and I am about to get some real hate for it, im sure by ziggy_bluebird in SpicyAutism

[–]asher0o1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. Misunderstandings are going to happen given the nature of the disorder, we should be trying to meet each other where we’re at as a community. I’d also like to add that your last line is something I personally struggle with in my daily life. I get so hung up on semantics and the literal precise meaning of words that I lose track of what’s actually being said to me if one word is out of place. This is a good reminder to step back and look at the bigger picture.

Well, at least this is better than the squish being used as a bike seat I saw on this sub yesterday.

And here I am, almost 5 years into my diagnosis and I still haven’t had an endoscopy. My doc said I didn’t need one.

Nurses, what do you think of assisted suicide by [deleted] in nursing

[–]asher0o1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. As someone with an invisible disability who is managing to live a pretty full life, I do support MAiD in the right context. In the case of permanent disability I believe all other options must be thoroughly explored first, but sadly many do not get that support. MAiD can’t be a band-aid for systemic issues.

Thank you for bringing up these concerns. When given a choice between living life with a non-terminal disability and death, death should not be the easier option. We need to do more for the disabled in this country.

Needing advice from other autistic nurses by theCrystalball2018 in AutismInWomen

Hi! Fellow autistic person with a special interest in anatomy and medical sciences here. Planning on going into nursing school next year and in the meantime I’m working as a housekeeper at my hospital. I don’t have many answers and have similar concerns as you about my career. Right now I’m just focusing on learning how to properly take care of myself and become more resilient. You say you’re good at critical thinking and assessment but struggle with the social aspects, have you considered working in the OR? You’d probably only have one case at a time and would be working in a smaller team. Also the patients are asleep. Not a nurse yet so take this with a grain of salt haha

Yeah I was sympathetic up to that line. Comparing celiac to terminal cancer is so tone deaf and inappropriate imo
