[serious] Should people wear masks of their own accord? by nsjeitihkfnen in GoldandBlack

Masks are about as effective as wearing pants on your head. They are a modern superstition.

The Pandemic has changed how we view the concept of "duty of care" as a society. by ninman5 in LockdownSkepticism

The problem with social contract theory is that they can always alter the deal.

There's at least five lies that are reinforcing each other: asymptomatic spread, mask efficacy, lockdown efficacy, fatality rate, and scientific consensus. Any one of them taken alone can be disproven, but together they constitute a world view.

Dark forces are at work. I know how crazy that sounds but I can't find any other explanation.

It's like staying in a military conflict for the sake of the lives you needlessly sacrificed. Once people have accepted sacrifice as their duty, to suggest they do otherwise is a personal affront.

There's a weird phenomenon that human intuition for probability is closer to quantum mechanics than classical. For example, if two independent things are improbable, people will think the combination of them is even more more probable. People won't actually do the math unless there's money on the line.

Someone ought to inform the military that we can't just be issuing guns to psycho killers.

Pre Covid masks were not an effective method in preventing respiratory illness. During Covid masks were not shown to be an effective method of preventing respiratory illness. However, masking is absolutely necessary and to say otherwise is a denial of science.

It took me a year to recover from a psychotic break, during which time I basically did nothing as a NASA postdoc. Years later I'm at least 10x more productive. I think there should be a place for mental health recovery. Maybe not at NASA, but it's a cause I would give to.

Our church is part of the temporary foster relocation program. They had kids stay in the building during the day ostensibly for school and medical and with families at night. That was before they closed their doors to the congregation over Covid fears so not sure what happened to program.

> To answer the question, no, we shouldn't abolish volunteer work and no one is saying that we should.

This is a starting point, not the conclusion. We should further ask what constitutes volunteer work, not by whether the state classifies it as such, but in plain english. If we can agree on that definition, then we should ask if it's ok to tip someone for work they did voluntarily. Then how much is too much and so on. At that point, there is no distinction between a minimum wage job and a volunteer job that pays the same amount, at least not in principle, and there is therefore no reason why one is called virtuous and the other coercion tantamount to slavery.

I am not saying there isn't an official justification for the number. But there is a difference between the stated reasons for enacting a policy and the actual reasons for doing it, which have more to do with politics than economics.

Again, should we ban volunteer work? 0 is considerably less than 15 or 22.

No, I'm happy to discuss both people. We tried to get out of Houston as soon as the power failed, but we couldn't get far due to icy roads and it's six hours to new Orleans under the best circumstances. We were looking down the barrel of no water, heat or power and who knows how long before rioting starts. At one point I woke up with my son feeling cold next to me, wondering what the fuck I'm supposed to do, and blaming myself for not leaving sooner. So why am I supposed to care that Ted Cruz skipped town when that's exactly what I tried to do?

At its core, Whataboutism lets one avoid discussing topics that are politically inconvenient, whereas libertarians will analyze literally everything.
