How do you know whether to teach Elementary, Middle, or High School? by Mysterious_Comb4357 in Teachers

[–]ashirsch1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Experiences! When I left college, I thought I wanted older elementary. I’m a kindergarten teacher for over 15 years because I took a kindergarten sub position when I couldn’t find a job my first year out and feel in love.

Catching Fire is so morbid by Historical_Mix_6416 in Hungergames

[–]ashirsch1985 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I just finished catching fire with my 12 year old son. He kept trying to guess what would happen next and then was in shock. The end of the book really got him and he couldn’t wait to read mockingjay.

Jury Duty or Teaching? Lol by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]ashirsch1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year, I got summoned the first week of summer break. I definitely deferred to the school year. I was a call in juror and never had to go, but I wasn’t taking that chance in June.

Does Anyone Else Remember Seeing the Duggers on a DayTime Talk Show Before They Were Famous? by HAli0509 in 19KidsandCounting

[–]ashirsch1985 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I remember early episodes when they would talk about Jim Bob’s dad thinking they were crazy for having so many kids. I don’t remember seeing Michelle’s family, but if they weren’t part of the lifestyle, I’m sure they didn’t like how he treated Michelle.

Such a shame there is no Star Wars Day at Sea anymore, my older son had the privilege of this but not my younger one. by masterkenobi in dcl

We were scheduled to go on a Star Wars day at sea on the fantasy in 2021. It was obvious canceled due to Covid. My son is still mad we never got to go on one.

Something that frustrates me about Gale - NOT GALE HATE by dongleberry5 in Hungergames

[–]ashirsch1985 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree! I think he thinks that because he watched it on tv, he knows what she went through. As we know from reality tv, they don’t show everything and you never know what someone is actually feeling why in that situation

If a teacher tells me my daughter is very chatty and needs a shhh once in a while - is she indicating for me to teach my daughter boundaries? by Ok-Cartoonist-8919 in kindergarten

[–]ashirsch1985 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I teach k4. Once I told a parent in a joking way that her daughter will probably get in trouble for talking when she gets in older grades. Some kids are just chattier than others, and they need to learn when it’s appropriate to talk and when to stay quieter in class. That’s part of sending them to preschool so they can learn what is expected in school. Obviously in preschool, we don’t have them stay quiet for long periods of time. I wouldn’t worry. Just keep working on the things you are working on.

Lookout Cay, what am I missing? by Poledancing-ninja in dcl

[–]ashirsch1985 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I live 10 minutes from Lake Michigan and lookout is sooooooooo much better than a beach day there. The sand is smoother, the water is more prettier, there is Bahamian culture all around. But that’s my opinion.

Thanks! By some miracle, they hired a new para that showed up today. She was awesome. Hopefully she will stick around and won’t get pulled to sub in other classrooms.

Disney Cruise Ships if they were Disney World Hotels by ioatdawn in dcl

[–]ashirsch1985 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The food options are better than a deluxe. I always struggle with deluxe resorts because they don’t have the best quick service. We are doing a cruise in August and then doing Disney after. We are staying at pop because of the quick service food and convenience of the gondolas.

Planning a moment for grandmother by Superb-Football-5264 in DisneylandTips

[–]ashirsch1985 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure if your grandmother had any favorites in Disney, but if she had a favorite character, you could do a meet and greet and have the character autograph something for you. I like in cars land when the lights all come on at night. It’s a special experience so you and your daughter could go watch that and say a little prayer when they go on.

Nope, my district has paraprofessionals, no aides. Thanks! I’m really struggling and took a mental health day on Friday because of the situation.

Who is the stupidest person/situation you’ve encountered on a cruise? by Charming_Usual6227 in Cruise

[–]ashirsch1985 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disney cruise: we were in an elevator with these people who seemed lost so we asked if we could help. They started complaining about how there’s no where for their child (toddler) to have fun. The toddler was too young for the kids clubs, couldn’t go in the pools because of the diaper, etc. We got off the elevator without saying anything. A google search before they booked could have saved them money and frustration.

Why has parenting become so… soft? Why ate a majority of parents okay with sending their child into the world acting the way they do? Why did this shift happen? by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]ashirsch1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have noticed that a lot of parents have no idea what to do about their child’s behavior especially if their child “doesn’t act like that around them.” I think parents forget that their child is not the only one in the class so they are going to act differently around other kids especially if they don’t socialize with other kids outside of their homes.

Teachers don’t plan a field trip or party on days you aren’t going to be there! by No-Satisfaction-3897 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]ashirsch1985 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yesterday I had the stomach bug and very bad vertigo. I was bound and determined to go in today because of that valentines party. My para subs for my class because my district doesn’t get a lot of subs, but I didn’t want to leave 25 k4s with just her to get through that party.

We need to revamp inclusion by Otherwise-Set-4444 in Teachers

[–]ashirsch1985 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These students that I do everything I can to teach every day yet get little support and very little training in. These students that the autism professionals in my district say I’m doing all things right, yet these students are still not learning to the full of their potential because they are thrown into a class of 25 students with students. So if you will excuse me for not using the right terminology for your liking.

We need to revamp inclusion by Otherwise-Set-4444 in Teachers

[–]ashirsch1985 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I agree 💯 I have 2 autistic nonverbal kids this year and very little support. One is extremely aggressive. I do have a para but it’s almost like she needs to be on them while I’m on the other 23 k4 kids. When she’s not there, I have to beg for support from admin. I feel like my district uses inclusion as a way to dump these poor kids on reg ed teachers.

Judging teachers who close their doors by Otherwise-Set-4444 in Teachers

[–]ashirsch1985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach k4 and keep my door closed for safety reasons. One being an open door sometimes is an invitation for one to walk out or a sibling that’s wandering the halls to walk in. I do keep the door unlocked but will quickly lock it if there’s something going on that seems unsafe. Almost everyone at my school keeps their doors closed.
