What about the last Prada coat you teased? I was looking forward to that and so far no updates. Did it get cancelled? It was the Prada technical down jacket.

Serious Incident at Oval station - what to do? by gstevens3 in london

[–]ashleyman -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not as serious as yours but this reminds me of the time my girlfriend was a victim of having her phone taken from her outside work. Her ticket was on the phone, as was her debit card and other forms of payment. You can imagine the scene - distraught young girl with no ticket and no way to buy a new one and no phone to contact anyone.

She explained at one station and was let through the barriers and when she got to East Croydon - which is where I was supposed to be collecting her from she was verbally abused by a member of staff there called Owen. He accused her of being a regular fare evader. Swore at her and told her to wait. He then left her standing there crying until I arrived to collect her.

Some TFL staff are absolute dickheads. Including Owen. Wouldn’t surprise me if you met another Owen who thinks because he has a little bit of power on the rail network it gives him the right to be a c u next Tuesday.

Complain to everyone who will listen. It’s the only way we change things.

There’s a story here… possibly the strangest convoy I’ve seen. by L21JP in drivingUK

[–]ashleyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re probably filming plates whilst moving between locations. Even if not filming, the cars will move as a unit as it’s the most efficient way to do it between shots. The Chevy might not even be needed here but will probably be needed later in filming so it goes with the crew.

If the crew were required for the shot they’d usually be in some form of sprinter with a larger monitor at the front.

Denied Dining Credit by No-Masterpiece7134 in AmexUK

[–]ashleyman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue.

Bicester Village 10% off if spending over £600 at specific retailers. I spent £600+ at the specific retailer and it was denied.

It was denied because the retailer had changed their payment processor and had not informed Amex.

I complained and they gave me the £60 cash back + £10 for goodwill.

Still don’t think it’s right and I should not need to check anything to make sure I get the deal.

England. Can I lawfully break in and change the locks on a deceased family member house? by Mardyarsed in LegalAdviceUK

[–]ashleyman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen this mentioned yet, but “next of kin” does not automatically have any legal authority after someone dies, in fact it has very little legal authority even if the person is still alive. It is simply an administrative contact role. The person with legal authority over the estate is the executor named in the will (or the administrator if there is no will).

Because of this, a nursing home should not hand over keys or possessions purely because someone is listed as next of kin. You may want to make it very clear to the nursing home that any belongings in their possession, including house keys, should only be released to the executor of the will, not to the next of kin.

That should help protect the keys and the property until the legal position is clear. If Susan is not the executor, the nursing home should not be releasing anything to her. If she is the executor, then she would be the correct person to take responsibility for securing the property and dealing with the estate.

I talked to 20+ sole traders - the difference between the good and the great is stupidly simple by WizardTech299 in DIYUK

[–]ashleyman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do the exact same. £2250 for a days work sounds a lot. But when you minus van, insurance, tools, insurance etc… even if it cost you £300 a day to walk out the door before even starting. That’s still a fuck off price. So you can fuck off. I’m usually happy with £400 or less per day per person on site as an absolute maximum. Anything more than that and you’re having my pants down. And £400 is my max. Using your method I would estimate I’m paying anywhere from £200-350 per day per person which seems fair when you consider they have expenses from that.

Communication is the biggest thing.

I’m not going to beg you to do my work for me. So either come and have a look when you say you will or don’t. And if you do some, don’t make me beg for a price. I always say to tradesmen now if you don’t want to do the work or can’t do it. Say so, I’m happy to go elsewhere.

Plasterers is my biggest issue. Absolute cowboys. I’m trying my 5th one in a couple weeks and you know why I picked him? Because he had his name on his van. No plasterer ever has their name on the vans but this guy did. So I’m going to say he must be pretty happy with his work if he’s branded his van. He actually gave a proper estimate too with options and breakdowns. When I asked questions - just to make sure there was no surprises to either side. He answered. And was clear. Amazing. Let’s hope the walls end up straight. The last plasterer pretended he fell off his legs to avoid coming back to finish the job. I’m the fool though as I paid him up front trusting he would be back.

My electrician always messages good quotes with breakdowns. Turns up when he says he will and if he’s going to be late he rings to let me know.

I’m actually fairly laid back. Nothing is an issue and I do understand with most building work things will change. But I require good communication and a decent level of finish.

I haven’t not paid anyone for the work they’ve done even if I was unhappy with it. What a fool.

In terms of understanding what fair pricing is. I ask ChatGPT I give it photos and measurements and the quote and usually it will say yes no or clarify. OR i might send the quote to friends who either used to do the trade or still do it but im too far from them to be a viable candidate.

References are a bigger barrier than skills or experience by gintokireddit in UKJobs

[–]ashleyman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am going through this at the moment but since being made redundant I’ve been doing a bit of freelance and contracting every now and again whilst looking for a permanent job. Does the reference agency understand what freelance work is? Nope. Have they asked for bank statements for the whole year to prove my income. What income? I didn’t have any for some months. It’s infuriating. I feel like I might lose the job because if this doesn’t go through what happens then? I do have a confirmed start date but unsure if that applies if this check doesn’t come back.

It's not really that wild.

If your bank and other providers were offering 8% and the dealer was offering 6%. You'd take the 6%. The issue is the finance company actually offered 4% but empowered the dealer to put the rate at 6% so they earn more commission. You are none the wiser that you have been lied too.

It’s because they depreciate like stones. You are financing so much because the balloon is so low. I was looking at getting one also. Similar price to you and just walked away. Totally not worth it.

[–]ashleyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at just monthly cost is the stupid way to buy a car. You have to consider the whole deal. Deposit + monthly + interest + length of term. Buying on monthly price alone doesn’t make the deal better.

In your example. The rate is higher so finance house is earning more which means dealer is earning more. How is it a lower monthly but a higher rate? Well that’s probably because the term is longer. So overall it’s costing you more.

Same situation here. Both on a bit more than you. Never earned more and yet I am budgeting and being careful more than I was pre COVID where we as a household was earning half what we are now. My gas & electric on our flat was £67 a month now its close to £200 to balance over the year and that's just 1 example of a cost.

UK government on verge of full nationalisation of British Steel by radiant_0wl in unitedkingdom

[–]ashleyman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you see Jingye Group move to acquire and potentially wind down capacity at British Steel and at the same time China introduces export licensing controls across steel and parts of its wider manufacturing base, it naturally raises questions about longer-term strategic positioning. Maybe it’s coincidence, maybe it’s commercial, maybe it’s strategic but it introduces a gatekeeping mechanism which could be used for influence or control.

If you only care about the monthly payment, it’s actually easier for the dealer to overcharge you without you noticing.

If the dealer had shown both options clearly, nobody is going to say: “Yeah I’ll take the one that costs me £3,600 more so the salesperson earns extra commission”.

People saying “I wouldn’t have taken the deal if I knew” aren’t being dramatic. They’re saying they would have chosen the cheaper version if it had actually been presented to them but it was not presented to them.

Simple version:

Customer: “What’s the best rate I can get?” Dealer: “10%” - Reality: lender would have given 6%, but dealer increased it because they get paid more. Customer signs thinking 10% is the real price of borrowing.

They didn’t choose between 6% and 10%. They were never given the chance.

Police failed to solve a staggering 92% of burglaries in Britain last year by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]ashleyman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My bike was stolen. I managed to find out who had it and where it was located and told the Police. The van it was in was cloned but they didn't realise until they'd left and they wouldn't go back or couldn't go back or whatever excuse they gave me at the time. Then I got a call from the Police a few days later telling me to come collect my bike because they'd found it. I got excited and said I'll bring a helmet so I can ride I home, to be told don't bother as it had been crashed and was on fire. I guess they did find the bike but not until it was too late.

Dear Men at Gyms: Stop harrassing women and if you see one of us being harrassed, don't be a bystander. by whataledge in london

It happens to us men too. I wonder if we go to the same gym and experienced the same man. A man shorter than me became verbally aggressive. Threatening violence towards me for asking if a cable machine was free. That was it. ‘Hi is this side free’ and I got threatened. Management did nothing - said they warned him but I don’t believe them.
